The themes are explored in the literature. Implications for organizations and leaders will be discussed.
Oral Chemotherapy: Safe Handling In The Home, Cynthia Huff
Oral Chemotherapy: Safe Handling In The Home, Cynthia Huff
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Background: According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (2016), oral anticancer agents (OAC) are hazardous drugs (HD) and require the same safe handling interventions in the home setting as in controlled health care environments. The use of a safe handling checklist for OAC administration is a way nurses can provide safe handling education to patients and caregivers and assess for understanding and competency for critical tasks. Effective home management strategies outlining caregiver protections, proper storage, administration of OACs, spill clean-up, and waste disposal could reduce exposure risks to toxic agents.
Objective: To present a safe-handling checklist …
A Compelling Case For Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Development Programs: An Integrative Review, Stacy Alves
A Compelling Case For Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Development Programs: An Integrative Review, Stacy Alves
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Background: In 2008, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) set a goal that by 2020, 90% of healthcare decisions would originate from the best evidence available. This goal remains intangible for many organizations. Despite reporting quality and safety as a top organizational priority, a survey of 276 Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) found that only roughly 50% of the CNEs said that EBP was practiced in their hospitals only “somewhat” or “not at all” (Melnyk, Gallagher‐Ford, Thomas, Troseth, Wyngarden, Kzalacha, 2016). Many organizations struggle to systematically integrate EBP into practice (Melnyk et al., 2018; Warren et al., 2016a). The Advancing Research and …

Safety Huddles: A Safety Net For Nurses Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Miranda Saint-Louis
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
In March 2020, our 31-bed geriatric medical unit was designated the first COVID-19 unit in a teaching hospital located in a New York City COVID-19 hot zone. At the time, little was known about SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it caused. We needed to find a way to keep them calm, assure their safety, and provide competent and compassionate patient care in a situation where best practices had not yet been established. The concepts from this article can be applied to provide support staff in any crisis. Providing a safety net for staff enables a focus on life-saving patient care without …

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In The Pediatric Population, Lorna Santiago
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In The Pediatric Population, Lorna Santiago
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
The incidence and prevalence of diabetes in youth in the United States is increasing. In particular, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is becoming more common in individuals younger than 20 years. Nurse practitioners and other primary care providers that see children should be knowledgeable about the condition and confident in participating in multidisciplinary management. Screening should begin at age 10 or at puberty, whichever comes first. Providers should screen all children who are overweight or obese or of Native American, African American, Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander race or ethnicity. Children of these ethnicities have a greater risk for …
Implementing Culture-Centered Diabetes Self-Management For The South Asian Population, Kalpana Prasai
Implementing Culture-Centered Diabetes Self-Management For The South Asian Population, Kalpana Prasai
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires complex care and involves a variety of self-management decisions on a regular basis to manage the symptoms and avoid complications. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes among the South Asian population is six times higher than their European and white American counterparts (Gujral et al. 2013). Culturally sensitive education may be the key to overcoming the barriers related to standard diabetes patient education and culturally appropriate type 2 diabetes management. Research and evidence-based practices show Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is associated with significant improvements in glycemic control and overall better …

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak places perinatal women at higher risk of developing anxiety and depression. Uncertainty, fear, and confusion in medical, social, economic, occupational and political aspects of life in the US add to existing stressors that perinatal women experience. To optimize the quality of perinatal care during the pandemic, appropriate mental health interventions must be implemented to prevent and alleviate perinatal anxiety and depression and improve maternal and infant outcomes. Measures include increased screening, non-pharmacologic and/or pharmacologic interventions and the use of telehealth for care delivery.
Keywords: perinatal anxiety, perinatal depression, COVID-19, SARS CoV-2, maternal …

The Significance Of Bridging The Health Literacy Gap, Ella Bermudez
The Significance Of Bridging The Health Literacy Gap, Ella Bermudez
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Objective: In the veteran population, almost one in every five patients has inadequate or marginal health literacy (Haun, Patel, French, Campbell, & Lapcevic, 2015). Having low health literacy predisposes patients to high emergency room (ER) utilization and hospital readmission (Mitchell, Sadikova, Jack, & Paasche-Orlow, 2012) and low treatment adherence (Miller, 2016). This manuscript aims to review the literature about health literacy and to encourage effective, standardized health education delivery to increase health literacy.
Method: An integrated review of the literature from Cochrane, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed databases showed the importance of bridging the health literacy gap. …

The Expansion And Evaluation Of Medication Assisted Treatment Services For An Underserved Rural Northern California Community, Carolyn Perrotti
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Problem: Widespread opioid misuse has led to the opioid epidemic that claims 130 deaths per day due to an opioid overdose (CDC, 2018). The opioid epidemic has plagued the United States for three decades and has been considered a public health emergency since 2017 (HHS, 2017). Rural communities are disproportionately affected by this problem and in 2014, the rate of opioid overdose deaths was 45% higher in rural communities (SAMHSA, 2018).
Context: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is considered the most effective treatment for opioid dependence because it incorporates medication management and biopsychosocial supports (Jones et al., 2018). Retention in a MAT …
Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria
Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
It is estimated that by 2020, the shortage of primary care providers will reach over 20,000. This has led to a surge of nurse practitioner (NP) programs across the nation. Recruiting and retaining preceptors is of paramount importance. Barriers and incentives to precepting must be identified in order to maximize teaching capacity. More effective ways of training NP students (NPs) need to be explored to capitalize on the time preceptors invest with students. The adoption of the OMP teaching model may facilitate training for the preceptor and improve the learning of NPs due to its simplicity and efficiency.
Moral Distress: Unaddressed Challenges For The “Most Honest And Ethical Profession”, Kelly Straight
Moral Distress: Unaddressed Challenges For The “Most Honest And Ethical Profession”, Kelly Straight
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Nurses and nurse practitioners (NPs) face greater responsibility to address the ethical challenges that present during the course of patient care, due to advances in medical technology and pharmaceutical innovation, and despite widening disparities within the U.S. healthcare system. These ethical questions, which arise during the course of routine patient care, are increasing in both number and complexity in nearly every patient care setting. Unresolved and/or ongoing ethical questions and conflicts encountered in patient care pose further issues such as the development of moral distress. The literature demonstrates that moral distress contributes to dissatisfaction, disengagement, and burnout which negatively affects …
