Objective Since the extreme lateral lumbar interbody fusion procedure was first reported by Ozgur in 2006, a large number of clinical studies have been published. Anatomical studies which explore methods to avoid visceral structures, such as the kidney, with this approach have not been examined in detail. We dissected the retroperitoneal space to analyze how the extreme lateral transpsoas approach to the lumbar spine could damage the kidney and related structures. Methods Eight sides from four fresh Caucasian cadavers were used for this study. The latissimus dorsi muscle and the thoracolumbar fascia were dissected to open the retroperitoneum. The fat …

Airway Stent Complications: The Role Of Follow-Up Bronchoscopy As A Surveillance Method., Hans J Lee, Wassim Labaki, Diana H Yu, Benjamin Salwen, Christopher R Gilbert, Andrea L C Schneider, Ricardo Ortiz, David Feller-Kopman, Sixto Arias, Lonny Yarmus Nov 2017

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background: Airway stenting has become an integral part of the therapeutic endoscopic management of obstructive benign and malignant central airway diseases. Despite increased use of airway stents and frequent stent-associated complications, no clear guidelines for surveillance and maintenance exist. This study aim is to elucidate predictive factors associated with development of stent complications, as well as an optimal surveillance period for follow-up bronchoscopy for early detection and possible prevention of stent-associated complications.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent airway stent placements at our institution from April 2010 to December 2013 for benign and malignant airway diseases. Metallic, …

Catastrophes And Complicated Intraoperative Events During Robotic Lung Resection., Brian E Louie Jan 2017

Catastrophes And Complicated Intraoperative Events During Robotic Lung Resection., Brian E Louie

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Intraoperative complications and catastrophes are an accepted and perhaps inevitable aspect of all surgeries. Anatomic pulmonary resection puts in close proximity the tracheal-bronchial tree, pulmonary vasculature, heart and great vessels within the small volume area of the chest. Fortunately, major complications and catastrophes are uncommon regardless of surgical approach. Pulmonary arterial injury is the most frequently reported. Most injuries necessitate a thoracotomy for definitive management though novel techniques are emerging for minimally invasive management. This section focuses on intraoperative pulmonary artery and vein injuries, major airway injuries and transections, injuries to major abdominal organs and effects of carbon dioxide insufflation …
