Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic condition that manifests through many changing symptoms over time. A person diagnosed with PD is typically supported by a spouse or other family member as their primary care partner, who experiences a host of biopsychosocial challenges associated with their care partner role. Critical illness creates long-term physical, psychological and cognitive deficits that negatively impact quality of life, persisting well beyond hospital discharge. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study is to understand and develop theoretical propositions on factors that patient’s perceive influence the process of recovery from critical illness in order to inform more comprehensive patient care management strategies.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 participants admitted to an ICU. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. For older adults, physical exercise is especially important in maintaining functional independence, extending quality of life, and optimizing personal health resources. For patients with chronic pain conditions, exercise participation can significantly improve patient-reported symptoms. Older adults are the most sedentary age group with the majority not meeting the recommended duration and intensity of weekly exercise. Nurse practitioner (NP) roles within hospital teams are evolving worldwide. However, understanding of their practice within the context of interprofessional (IP) teamwork remains limited. This two-phase study undertaken within Ontario, Canada provides a new multi-perspective understanding of the value of NP practice within IP hospital teams. Constructivist grounded theory, a modification of the classic methodology, guided an interpretive approach based in exploration of process and meaning construction, privilege and power exposure, and juxtaposition with extant theory.
