Consideration Of Executive Functioning For Physiotherapy Rehabilitation: Studies Of Physiotherapists’ Knowledge, Normative Data, And A Practice Application, Nicole A. Guitar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Executive functioning (EF) refers to cognitive abilities involved in decision-making and self-regulation and can be impaired in many patients referred for physiotherapy, including older adults and people living with chronic pain. This dissertation aimed to determine what physiotherapists understood about EF, to summarize normative data for application in physiotherapy practice, and to provide an assessment of feasibility for studying EF impairments in people living with chronic pain. Study one surveyed what physiotherapists understood about EF as a concept, what EF assessments they used, and if this was influenced by their primary area of practice. Respondents (N = 262) subjectively reported …

Falls Screening In Community- Dwelling Older Adults, Hadi Kooshiar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Falls screening can prevent falls and their consequences. The two studies of this thesis aimed to identify the accuracy of falls screening tools and explore patient preferences and empirical validity of the self-rated Falls Risk Questionnaire (FRQ). The first study, Systematic Literature Review, found the Toulouse-St. Louis University Mini Falls Assessment and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale Hindi version emerged as accurate tools for predicting falls in the target population. The second study determined most of respondents, 36%, had no preference between Activities Specific Balance Confidence 6 items (ABC-6) or FRQ. The Bland & Altman approach revealed a degree of …
Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome: Evaluating Postoperative Rehabilitation Progress And Return To Sport Readiness, Trevor A. Day
Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome: Evaluating Postoperative Rehabilitation Progress And Return To Sport Readiness, Trevor A. Day
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common cause of non-arthritic hip pain and reduced physical activity in active young adults. It is defined as a motion-related disorder of the hip with a triad of symptoms, clinical signs, and imaging findings that represents symptomatic premature contact between the proximal femur and the acetabulum. There are two anatomical morphologies that can cause FAIS, cam, and pincer, and is a challenging clinical pathology. Patients typically undergo hip arthroscopy to repair damage to the joint and recess the bone causing the impingement. These procedures can result in positive outcomes for the patient, like reduced …
The Impact Of Quality-Based Procedures On Radical Prostatectomy Outcomes In Ontario, Nickan Motamedi
The Impact Of Quality-Based Procedures On Radical Prostatectomy Outcomes In Ontario, Nickan Motamedi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Ontario’s new health funding model, Quality-Based Procedures (QBP), designated certain performance outcomes that would determine future cancer care funding. We examined pre-specified outcomes for radical prostatectomy, one of the procedures integrated into QBP funding in 2015. We conducted two retrospective studies using provincial administratively-linked databases, including patients who underwent radical prostatectomy between April 2010 and March 2019. Our first study evaluated the 30-day complication rate and the trend in surgical approach. Our second study compared QBP outcomes before and after implementation of the funding model. The first study demonstrated that complication rate improved over the study period, possibly due to …
Troubling Service User Involvement In Health Professional Education: Toward Epistemic Justice, Stephanie Leblanc-Omstead
Troubling Service User Involvement In Health Professional Education: Toward Epistemic Justice, Stephanie Leblanc-Omstead
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
It has become increasingly popular in health professional education to solicit the contributions and involvement of people who have firsthand or ‘lived’ experiences of using mental health services – a practice hereafter referred to as service user involvement (SUI). SUI is founded on the premise that service users ought to be involved in the development and evaluation of services and systems they experience, which includes the education of future health professionals. Despite the momentum this practice has gained in a range of international contexts, SUI is often conceptualized, organized, and implemented uncritically, and with tremendous inconsistency across health professional education …
The Role And Importance Of Social Support During Recovery Following Distal Radius Fracture, Ogheneruona Mi Idoghor Ikpen
The Role And Importance Of Social Support During Recovery Following Distal Radius Fracture, Ogheneruona Mi Idoghor Ikpen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis explored how social support changes with time and differs across genders within 1-year post distal radius fracture (DRF). It also examines the effect of social support on the patient-rated wrist evaluation (PRWE) score and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of DRF patients at 3 months post-fracture. In this cohort study, patient-reported social support (emotional/informational, tangible, affectionate and positive social interaction) was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) social support survey, and HRQoL was measured using the 36-Item Short-Form Survey (SF-36). Social support significantly decreased at 3 months in comparison to baseline, 6 months and 1 year (with …
Exploring Experiences Of Parents Of A Child With Medical Complexity: A Case Study Approach, Vanessa Rocchese
Exploring Experiences Of Parents Of A Child With Medical Complexity: A Case Study Approach, Vanessa Rocchese
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Parents of children with medical complexity (CMC) have the unique experience of also being their child’s health care provider (HCP). This cross-sectional, qualitative single-case study sought to 1) examine experiences of parental caregivers of CMC whilst navigating healthcare and social systems; and 2) examine influences of urban/rural settings on parental caregiver experiences. An online demographic survey and semi-structured telephone interviews were utilized with two families, one urban (n=1) and one rural (n=2). A thematic analysis was undertaken using both intersectionality and the Conceptual Model of Health-Related Quality of Life-(HRQoL) as frameworks to explore findings. This study revealed that challenges in …
A Transformative Journey: The Lived Experience Of Healthcare Learners Participating In Pain Management Education, Zoe A. Leyland
A Transformative Journey: The Lived Experience Of Healthcare Learners Participating In Pain Management Education, Zoe A. Leyland
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
There is little emphasis on pain management education for healthcare providers. In September 2019, the Master of Clinical Science (MClSc) program in Advanced Healthcare Practice at Western University in London, Ontario introduced a new, “Interprofessional Pain Management” (IPM) field. The program follows a competency-based framework, and the learners are all practicing healthcare providers with a special interest in pain. Part of the purpose of this thesis is to describe the process of development and implementation. The objective is to provide educators and healthcare providers an in-depth look at how the pain education is experienced. This includes exploring the lived experience …
The Psychosocial And Physical Effects Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Cerebral Palsy, Karen M. Pratt
The Psychosocial And Physical Effects Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Cerebral Palsy, Karen M. Pratt
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Background: Participation in specialized adapted activities such as therapeutic horseback riding (THR) is critical for children with cerebral palsy (CP) as they are at increased risk for lower habitual physical activity levels, social exclusion and mental health conditions. The benefits of THR for children CP are unclear despite positive anecdotal evidence. Purpose: The aim of the study is to explore the effects of THR participation for children with CP across multiple domains of health (psychological, social and physical) from the children themselves. Specifically, this study explored overall wellbeing including mental health, perceived independence, social inclusion and presence of fatigue and …
The Cost-Effectiveness Of A Midvastus Versus Standard Medial Parapatellar Surgical Approach For Total Knee Arthroplasty, Ishita Joshi
The Cost-Effectiveness Of A Midvastus Versus Standard Medial Parapatellar Surgical Approach For Total Knee Arthroplasty, Ishita Joshi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The minimally invasive midvastus (MMV) surgical approach for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a less invasive technique that has been proposed to accelerate recovery over standard TKA, however, advantages are not yet definitively established. We investigated the cost-effectiveness of MMV TKA versus the standard medial parapatellar (MPP) approach for TKA alongside a randomized controlled trial in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Patients reported resource use as well as indirect costs, and health outcomes were measured using the EQ-5D-5L and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index over the 12-month study period. The results of our net benefit regression analysis suggest …

Nature, Nurture, Or Both? Study Of Sex And Gender And Their Effects On Pain, Maryam Ghodrati
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
As a pain researcher, in order to have a better understanding of pain, we should adopt a multidimensional view, such as the biopsychosocial (BPS) model and consider physical, psychological, and social elements altogether. The studies in this dissertation are part of the bigger project of SYMBIOME in which the aim is to help to create and develop a prognostic clinical phenotype in people post musculoskeletal (MSK) trauma. Chapter 2 presents a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in order to assess the structural validity of the first section of the new Gender Pain and Expectation Scale (GPES). Our analysis indicated a 3-factor …
Therapist Perception Of The Clarity And Implementability Of Relevant Recommendations From American Academy Of Orthopedic Surgeon’S Distal Radius Fracture Clinical Practice Guidelines, Saravanan Esakki

Fractures of the distal radius are common and can cause substantial either transient or permanent impairment and disability.
Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are systematically developed statements or recommendations based on the best available evidence and aimed at assisting health care practitioners in clinical decision-making. Many professional organizations have developed practice guidelines for common clinical conditions. The overall objective of this thesis is to evaluate the therapist's perception of the clarity and implementability of rehabilitation relevant recommendations from The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) CPG for distal radius fractures (DRF) and to identify the quality of CPG related to DRF. …
Predicting Dissatisfaction With Total Knee Arthroplasty, Joseph S. Munn
Predicting Dissatisfaction With Total Knee Arthroplasty, Joseph S. Munn
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common and effective treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis. However, approximately 20% of patients are consistently found to be dissatisfied or unsure of their satisfaction with their TKA at 1-year post-surgery. Two strategies for reducing dissatisfaction have appeared in the literature. The first aims to reduce the number of dissatisfied patients who will undergo surgery by identifying patients likely to be dissatisfied pre-surgery. The second aims to implement interventions that improve patient satisfaction by generating realistic expectations for outcomes and by association improving met expectations scores. It may be possible to improve the performance of these …
Exploring Methods For Improving Baseplate Fixation In Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, Sejla Abdic
Exploring Methods For Improving Baseplate Fixation In Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, Sejla Abdic
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Improving the success of modern reverse shoulder replacements is dependent on optimal initial baseplate fixation. A cadaveric biomechanical investigation examined how peripheral screw position and orientation affect baseplate fixation in normal glenoids. The results show no statistically significant difference between screw position (p=.60) or orientation (p=.20) regarding baseplate micromotion in the non-eroded glenoid. In a subsequent study to determine best management in pathologic baseplate fixation, a computer-model was employed to quantify the erosion in the E2 type glenoid. In the E2 type glenoid, erosion was found to be oriented postero-superiorly and covering an average of 66% of the surface area …
