Executive functioning (EF) refers to cognitive abilities involved in decision-making and self-regulation and can be impaired in many patients referred for physiotherapy, including older adults and people living with chronic pain. This dissertation aimed to determine what physiotherapists understood about EF, to summarize normative data for application in physiotherapy practice, and to provide an assessment of feasibility for studying EF impairments in people living with chronic pain. Study one surveyed what physiotherapists understood about EF as a concept, what EF assessments they used, and if this was influenced by their primary area of practice. Falls screening can prevent falls and their consequences. The two studies of this thesis aimed to identify the accuracy of falls screening tools and explore patient preferences and empirical validity of the self-rated Falls Risk Questionnaire (FRQ). The first study, Systematic Literature Review, found the Toulouse-St. Louis University Mini Falls Assessment and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale Hindi version emerged as accurate tools for predicting falls in the target population. Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common cause of non-arthritic hip pain and reduced physical activity in active young adults. It is defined as a motion-related disorder of the hip with a triad of symptoms, clinical signs, and imaging findings that represents symptomatic premature contact between the proximal femur and the acetabulum. There are two anatomical morphologies that can cause FAIS, cam, and pincer, and is a challenging clinical pathology. Ontario’s new health funding model, Quality-Based Procedures (QBP), designated certain performance outcomes that would determine future cancer care funding. We examined pre-specified outcomes for radical prostatectomy, one of the procedures integrated into QBP funding in 2015. We conducted two retrospective studies using provincial administratively-linked databases, including patients who underwent radical prostatectomy between April 2010 and March 2019. Our first study evaluated the 30-day complication rate and the trend in surgical approach. Our second study compared QBP outcomes before and after implementation of the funding model. This thesis explored how social support changes with time and differs across genders within 1-year post distal radius fracture (DRF). It also examines the effect of social support on the patient-rated wrist evaluation (PRWE) score and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of DRF patients at 3 months post-fracture. This cross-sectional, qualitative single-case study sought to 1) examine experiences of parental caregivers of CMC whilst navigating healthcare and social systems; and 2) examine influences of urban/rural settings on parental caregiver experiences. The minimally invasive midvastus (MMV) surgical approach for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a less invasive technique that has been proposed to accelerate recovery over standard TKA, however, advantages are not yet definitively established. We investigated the cost-effectiveness of MMV TKA versus the standard medial parapatellar (MPP) approach for TKA alongside a randomized controlled trial in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common and effective treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis. However, approximately 20% of patients are consistently found to be dissatisfied or unsure of their satisfaction with their TKA at 1-year post-surgery. Two strategies for reducing dissatisfaction have appeared in the literature. The first aims to reduce the number of dissatisfied patients who will undergo surgery by identifying patients likely to be dissatisfied pre-surgery. Improving the success of modern reverse shoulder replacements is dependent on optimal initial baseplate fixation. A cadaveric biomechanical investigation examined how peripheral screw position and orientation affect baseplate fixation in normal glenoids. The results show no statistically significant difference between screw position (p=.60) or orientation (p=.20) regarding baseplate micromotion in the non-eroded glenoid. In a subsequent study to determine best management in pathologic baseplate fixation, a computer-model was employed to quantify the erosion in the E2 type glenoid. In the E2 type glenoid, erosion was found to be oriented postero-superiorly and covering an average of 66% of the surface area …
