The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the experience of nursing practice while also making health providers more publicly visible. Public discourses around the role of health providers through the pandemic, in particular nurses, have the potential to shape the nature of their professional role. This study makes use of critical discourse analysis (CDA) influenced by Foucault and social theory to explore discourse, power, and the role of the nurse. In particular, consideration is given to discourses present around the role of the nurse and how these have changed or been accentuated as a result of this global crisis. …

Abstract

As a result of 2000 legislation changes regarding entry-to-practice for nurses, collaborative nursing education programs were formed in Ontario. These legislative changes required Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAATs) to find university partners to enter into collaborative arrangements in order to continue delivering nursing education, due to their inability to confer university baccalaureate degrees independently. Subsequently, 21 CAATs in Ontario merged with 13 university nursing programs and entered into an education partnership in order for their graduates to meet an entry-to-practice requirement of a university baccalaureate degree. Introduction: Role competence and patient safety (PS) competence among healthcare professionals are rapidly developing issues due to increasing patient acuity and complexity in the healthcare system. Upon graduation, nurse practitioners (NPs) provide autonomous healthcare for populations with complex health needs, thus role and PS competence is imperative. In Canada, few studies have examined NP education and role development specific to NP role competence and PS competencies. In the past two decades, there has been an increased interest in the development of self-management programs for people with chronic diseases. Fundamental to chronic disease management is adequate literacy and health literacy skills. Reports indicate that new graduate nurses (NGNs) are experiencing stressful work environments, affecting job satisfaction and retention in current positions. New nurses are a health human resource that must be retained in order to ensure the replacement of retiring nurses, and to address impending shortages. Nurses are leaving the profession due to high levels of job dissatisfaction arising from current working conditions characterized by heavy workloads, limited participation in decision making and lack of development opportunities (Canadian Health Services Research Foundation [CHSRF], 2006a). To gain organizational support for workplace improvements and thereby improve nursing retention, evidence is needed to demonstrate the impact of the work environment on patient care.
