Effects Of Aerobic And Resistance Exercise On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Cognitive Benefits In Alzheimer’S Disease, Stephanie Cullen Jan 2017

Effects Of Aerobic And Resistance Exercise On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Cognitive Benefits In Alzheimer’S Disease, Stephanie Cullen

2017 Undergraduate Awards

Cognitive function below age-matched controls is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor is a biochemical molecule that mediates neuronal survival, but its expression is reduced in Alzheimer’s disease, causing neurodegeneration. Exercise has been shown to increase Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, which mediates improvements in cognition in Alzheimer’s patients and slows cognitive decline. Evidence is presented to show that aerobic exercise is well known to increase serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, while resistance training studies have not yet shown a conclusive effect. Increased Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor from aerobic exercise has been shown to mediate improvements in hippocampal volume and executive function. …

A Biomedical And Health Policy Analysis Of Evidence-Based Therapeutic Abortion In Canada, Luissa Vahedi Jan 2017

A Biomedical And Health Policy Analysis Of Evidence-Based Therapeutic Abortion In Canada, Luissa Vahedi

2017 Undergraduate Awards

Therapeutic Abortion (TA) is the medically-necessary termination of pregnancy due to maternal or fetal health complications. As a “wicked problem”, TA involves multiple stakeholders with competing biomedical and political ideologies. This research paper synthesizes evidence-based biomedical and health policy literature relating to TA, thereby advancing the aims of reproductive justice by supporting women in making informed health decisions. Firstly, a biomedical literature investigation was conducted to identify international evidence-based abortion standards, according to pregnancy trimester. Secondly, a policy analysis utilizing the “3-I” framework was conducted to determine the ideas, interests, and institutions involved in accessing safe and equitable TA in …

Suicide Prevention And Mental Health Initiatives For Inuit Youth In Canada, Amy Lewis

2017 Undergraduate Awards

Indigenous Peoples in Canada continue to experience health and social inequities in the postcolonial era. The Inuit are one aggregate whose livelihoods have been drastically altered through government subsistence programs and residential schools. The loss of culture, community, and relationships have had a negative impact on this population, particularly youth, as evidenced by high rates of suicide and issues with mental health and substance abuse. A search of scholarly and gray literature was completed to identify factors that contribute to suicide among Inuit youth and potential interventions. While interventions that address mental health and suicidal risk factors have been successful, …
