Since the COVID-19 pandemic, national vaccination rates show a dangerous decline with Detroit being amongst the lowest with only 41.3% of adolescents completing the vaccine series. The Vaccine Ambassador program was created to mitigate the decline in vaccination rates through the education and empowerment of youth via train-the-trainer model of education.

The program was implemented over the course of two years with a total of 28 high school students who received education on the history and mechanism of vaccines, herd immunity, and how to effectively communicate. There continues to be a lack of representation and diversity in higher education today, especially in medicine and healthcare. As part of the Healthy Hearts student organization at Wayne State University School of Medicine, we developed a one-time educational session and interactive demonstration to teach students about heart and lung health and fuel students’ enthusiasm for healthcare. This project serves as a quality improvement study to understand how we can increase STEM interest in elementary and middle school students in and around Detroit, Michigan. Background: Cadaver dissection remains integrated into the curriculum of numerous medical schools. Aspiring physicians acquire the opportunity to work directly with the human body, which is intricate and tangible, yet have minimal exposure to certain procedural skills applicable­­ to patient care during the first year of their medical training. As of 2016, 85% of the homeless population within Michigan were covered under Medicaid health insurance. Despite insurance coverage, many depend on student-run free clinics to meet their health care needs, however, few clinics are available to provide specialty-based care. The Community Homeless Interprofessional Program (CHIP) student-run free vision clinic in Detroit, Michigan works to address vision care. With great emphasis on preventative optical care, student-run vision clinics have provided satisfactory preliminary screenings to the homeless population. In 2018, medical students at Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) created a first aid training initiative called First Aid First (FAF). FAF is a comprehensive community-based training program that teaches lifesaving skills tailored for Detroit. The objective of this initiative was to improve the confidence and basic first aid skills of those who attend trainings.

Because they do not rank highly in the hierarchy of evidence and are not frequently cited, case reports describing the clinical circumstances of single patients are seldom published by medical journals. However, many clinicians argue that case reports have significant educational value, advance medical knowledge, and complement evidence-based medicine. Over the last several years, a vast number (~160) of new peer-reviewed journals have emerged that focus on publishing case reports. These journals are typically open access and have relatively high acceptance rates. Addressing the health information needs of diverse, multiethnic, and multilingual communities can be both a challenge and an opportunity for libraries. The Vera P. Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, is the only academic medical library in the Detroit area open to the public. The library provides services to many communities in southeastern Michigan. The diverse geographic area served by the library includes the nation’s highest concentration of Arab Americans.
