Newer Techniques In Clinical Cytology: Aspiration Biopsy And Brushing Cytology, William J. Frable

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Since its introduction some twenty years ago the Papanicolaou technique for cervical-vaginal cytology has had a tremendous impact on the detection of precancerous lesions and in situ cancer in the female genital tract. It has forced the clinician and pathologist to study the "early lesions" of cancer, particularly in the female genital tract and has brought about a better understanding of their biology. Cytology has over the years been extended to other areas, particularly the respiratory tract. Two recent areas of emphasis are the thin-needle aspiration biopsy and direct brushing of mucosal surfaces through the various fiber optic scopes now …

Book Review, Leo J. Dunn Jan 1968

Book Review, Leo J. Dunn

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Vaginal Cytology, Grimaldo Carvalho, (ed.). New York, New York: Vantage Press, 1968. Dr. Carvalho's book, VAGINAL CYTOLOGY, offers an inexpensive, brief, and clear survey of the various uses to which vaginal cytology is now applied. The book presents an orderly approach to the diagnostic uses to which cytology may be put in clinical endocrinology, complications of pregnancy, diagnosis of malignancy, and prediction of radiation sensitivity.

Intracellular Co₂ Tension: Practice And Theory, Eugene D. Robin Jan 1967

Intracellular Co₂ Tension: Practice And Theory, Eugene D. Robin

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I have been asked to discuss methods of measuring intracellular Pco₂ and to discuss the physiology and biochemistry of intracellular CO₂ tensions. Actually, I am in a relatively fortunate position in that my difficulties in discussing the methodology of intracellular Pco₂ measurements are considerably less than those which face my two colleagues. The reason for this becomes apparent if one analyzes the following quantitative relationships. [Includes discussion.]

Oxygen Tension: Direct Observations On The Critical Level For The Brain, Frans F. Jӧbsis Jan 1967

Oxygen Tension: Direct Observations On The Critical Level For The Brain, Frans F. Jӧbsis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this lecture I want to address myself to the questions: What is the lowest oxygen tension compatible with adequate function, and what are the factors that set this limit? Much of the background to the material present here has been reviewed extensively in the not too distant past (Jӧbsis '64), and I will take the liberty of letting that article provide most of the detailed justification of my remarks today. [Includes discussion.]

Intracellular Ph Determination By Means Of Ph Glass Microelectrodes, Norman W. Carter Jan 1967

Intracellular Ph Determination By Means Of Ph Glass Microelectrodes, Norman W. Carter

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A number of years ago I decided to attempt to measure the intracellular pH of skeletal muscle by a more direct method than those in current use, that is, by an electrode. I excluded all forms of pH electrodes except the glass electrode and then set up a certain number of characteristics or requirements that this electrode should have. First, the electrode should be insulated in such a manner that only the pH-sensitive portion is in the cell cytoplasm. Second, the reference side of the electrode group should also be within the cell, because the cell has a transmembrane potential; …

Symposium On Intracellular Ph, Pco₂ And Po₂: Introductory Remarks, John L. Patterson Jr. Jan 1967

Symposium On Intracellular Ph, Pco₂ And Po₂: Introductory Remarks, John L. Patterson Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It is a pleasure to welcome the three authorities who will carry the major load of presentations in our symposium today. They are Dr. Frans Jöbsis of Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Eugene Robin of The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Dr. Norman Carter of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. We are also grateful for the presence of Dr. Lutz Kiesow of the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Kiesow will assist in the discussions to be held after each major presentation. Each of these men is an international authority in his field, and …

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris Jan 1966

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A tissue culture chamber is described that introduces the concept of a fixed platform within a "perfusion type" chamber. The platform is made of stainless steel mesh covered with a membrane of reconstituted collagen. The collagen membrane serves as the supporting substratum for the cultured tissue and is of such an optical quality as to permit phase-contrast microscopic observation of the tissue. The perfusion chamber is a Sykes-Moore tissue culture chamber modified to twice its normal depth to receive the screen. Cell growth in the experimental chamber is superior to growth in the control chamber both in speed of proliferation …
