Cardiac Slowing As A Function Of Biofeedback And Sensory Deprivation Or Biofeedback Alone, William D. Kearns
Cardiac Slowing As A Function Of Biofeedback And Sensory Deprivation Or Biofeedback Alone, William D. Kearns
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Boucharq and Corson (1976) found that subjects required to lower heart rate to avoid the loss of money used the strategy of attending to meaningless stimulation twice as often as subjects required to lower heart rates to obtain money, and that subjects decreasing heart rate to avoid the loss of money performed significantly better than subjects required to lower heart rate to obtain money.
Seven male and seven female undergraduates participated in a study designed to test the hypothesis that visual focusing on meaningless stimulation and biofeedback would produce larger heart rate decreases than biofeedback alone. Each subject attended three …
Brunfelsia Hopeana - Pharmacologic Screening: Isolation And Characterization Of Hopeanine, Radhakrishnan Parameswaran Iyer
Brunfelsia Hopeana - Pharmacologic Screening: Isolation And Characterization Of Hopeanine, Radhakrishnan Parameswaran Iyer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The genus Brunfelsia (Fam. Solannceae) comprises some 40 species of shrubs native to South Africa and West Indies. Brunfelsia hopeana (common name: Manaca root) and related species are recognized in folk medicine in South America as being useful as diuretic, antirheumatic, antisyphilitic agents and as narcotic hallucinogens. In view of the interesting folkloric uses and a paucity of chemical and pharmacological investigation of B. hopeana, a systematic phytochemical and pharmacological investigation on B. hopeana was undertaken in our laboratory.
Hippocratic screening of the whole root powder and extracts of B. hopeana administered intrapcritonially to rats, indicated that the whole root …

Contraceptive Sterilization As A Life Change Event: Its Effects Upon The Mmpi And Cpi Scales, Joseph Lee Anastasio
Contraceptive Sterilization As A Life Change Event: Its Effects Upon The Mmpi And Cpi Scales, Joseph Lee Anastasio
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study concerned itself with voluntary contraceptive sterilization in general, and involved both vasectomy and female sterilization individually. Vasectomy and female sterilization were not considered to be the same and were treated individually, yielding two studies in one. Males were studied for psychological, marital and sexual reactions to vasectomy; and females were studied for the same reactions to female sterilization. Although references will often be made to sterilization as a general term, this distinction should be maintained throughout the research. All hypotheses, while states as though they referred to sterilization in general, will consider vasectomy and female sterilization are compared, …
Drug Prescribing And Administration Changes In Hospitalized Geriatric Patients : Analysis Of Three Drug Utilization Review Programs, Edward James Elzarian
Drug Prescribing And Administration Changes In Hospitalized Geriatric Patients : Analysis Of Three Drug Utilization Review Programs, Edward James Elzarian
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Elderly people, or those over 65 years of age, are known to comprise 10% of the United States population today and are projected to reach nearly 12% by the year 2000. Further, 5% of this population is reported to be institutionalized resulting in approximately 1.1 million chronic care patients or 0.5% of the population. The use of drugs in this population comprises approximately 25% of the prescription drug market in the United States which is directly related to the greater occurrence of pathological problems associated with the aging process. While it is evident that the beneficial outcome of drug therapies …
The Effects Of Augmenting Systematic Desensitization, Covert Sensitization And Covert Self-Reward With Group Therapy In The Treatment Of Alcoholism, Thomas R. Sagendorf
The Effects Of Augmenting Systematic Desensitization, Covert Sensitization And Covert Self-Reward With Group Therapy In The Treatment Of Alcoholism, Thomas R. Sagendorf
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of trad~tional group therapy treatment for alcoholic out-patient clients with group therapy plus approaches that incorporated behavioral self-control techniques. Reducing anxiety in social situations was the focus of the behavior therapy treatments. Only alcoholics who were highly anxious (eightieth percentile), according to their scores on the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (!PAT) Anxiety Scale, were used as subjects.
The subjects were 24 clients from the San Joaquin County Alcoholism Rehabilitation Center who were all undergoing group therapy at the beginning of the study. Trios of subjects were matched on …
Effects Of The Medication Reminder Record With Counseling And The Daily Medication Package On Drug Compliance By Ambulatory Psychiatric Patients, Albert T. Gazzar
Effects Of The Medication Reminder Record With Counseling And The Daily Medication Package On Drug Compliance By Ambulatory Psychiatric Patients, Albert T. Gazzar
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Drug default is the failure of a patient to comply fully with medication regimens and is major unsolved problem confronting health care providers oday. Drug default is also known as medication noncompliance.
Very few studies have been reported comparing the effects of counseling and the unit dose packaging upon compliance. Further, no studies have been reported on the effects of counseling and unit dose packaging upon compliance in ambulatory psychiatric patients. The present investigation was undertaken to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of the Medication Reminder Record, a type of patient calender sheet, with counseling as a means of improving compliance …

A Method Of Detecting Viral Contamination In Parenteral Solutions., Joseph Alexander Woelfel
A Method Of Detecting Viral Contamination In Parenteral Solutions., Joseph Alexander Woelfel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The presence of contaminants in parenteral solutions is a constant nemesis against which pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as medical, pharmacy , and nursing practitioners mus t vigilantly struggle to provide quality health care. At each level in the parenteral drug delivery system, contamination is possible before the patient actually receives the infusion. The implementation of better practices and procedures continues in the quest of contaminant-free parenterals, nevertheless, the literature is replete with articles documenting contamination of parenteral medication.
