Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether hospital practices are associated with breastfeeding initiation and breastfeeding duration for ≥10 weeks.
Methods: We analyzed the 2013-2015 South Carolina Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) data. The population of interest was mothers who delivered a single live birth in the hospital. The infant was alive and living with the mother at the time of the survey. Chi-square and logistic regression were used to examine breastfeeding initiation and duration among all women who delivered in a hospital and those who stated that they initiated breastfeeding while in the …
The Role Of Cdk8 In Metastatic Growth Of Colon Cancer, Jiaxin Liang
The Role Of Cdk8 In Metastatic Growth Of Colon Cancer, Jiaxin Liang
Theses and Dissertations
Unresectable hepatic metastases of colon cancer poorly respond to existing therapies and are a major cause of colon cancer lethality. Transcription- regulating Mediator kinase CDK8, an early clinical stage drug target, is amplified or overexpressed in many colon cancers and CDK8 expression correlates with shorter patient survival. Here we show that CDK8 inhibition does not generally suppress proliferation of CDK8-overexpressing colon cancer cells but nevertheless CDK8 knockdown by shRNA or CDK8 kinase inhibition by a selective small-molecule drug candidate suppresses metastatic growth of mouse and human colon cancer cells in the liver. This effect is due at least in part …
Physical Activity During Pregnancy And Birth Outcomes In South Carolina 2009-2015, Andrew Tyler Broadway
Physical Activity During Pregnancy And Birth Outcomes In South Carolina 2009-2015, Andrew Tyler Broadway
Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity is known to be beneficial to adults in general, including pregnant women, but the literature on physical activity and neonatal outcomes has been inconsistent. Few studies have differentiated between physical activity prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy to see whether the typical beneficial effect is not due to having a more active lifestyle in general. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a national cross-sectional surveillance system. Our data from SC PRAMS included 6391 respondents and was weighted to be representative of population of pregnant women that delivered in the state. We excluded births that were not …
The Importance Of Interdisciplinarity: Redefining The Health Belief Model, Ross F. Lordo
The Importance Of Interdisciplinarity: Redefining The Health Belief Model, Ross F. Lordo
Senior Theses
Throughout academia, there lacks an existence of a commonly utilized multicomponent and interdisciplinary approach in understanding our outside world. This thesis provides an analysis of the current state of interdisciplinarity and the need to develop interdisciplinary theory. Through this effort, the researcher utilizes the health belief model as a framework that is severely limited in applicable scope due to its constructs. Contrastingly, systems theory and game theory are validated as examples of theories with an interdisciplinary nature. Through the coding of the literature pertaining to the qualitative characteristics of the health belief model, game theory and systems theory, guidelines in …

Integration Of A Sensory Driven Model For Hand Grasp Function In 3d Printed Prostheses, Austin T. Hetherington
Integration Of A Sensory Driven Model For Hand Grasp Function In 3d Printed Prostheses, Austin T. Hetherington
Senior Theses
My Honors Thesis was completed through the Biomedical Engineering senior design project I worked on. Our project took a mechanically operated 3D printed prosthetic hand and automated the process by which it makes a grasp. The purpose of this project was to provide an affordable, automatic prosthetic hand to those either capable and incapable of wrist flexion. The current 3D printed prosthetic models require users to bend their wrist to initiate a simple grasp. However, our design took an alternative approach by using an EMG sensor placed on the ventral side of the forearm to record muscle activity, which, upon …

Senior Theses
This senior thesis evaluates the Socratic method by comparing its original form, used by Socrates with students such as Meno, to its modern invocations in institutions such as law or medical school. In order to gauge the actual efficacy of the Socratic method in teaching logicality, which is the primary goal of Socratic dialogues, a pilot study was run. The results and implications of this study are embedded in the central portion of the thesis. The study found a statistically significant correlation between the amount of Socratic instruction a student had and that student's performance on a syllogistic reasoning task. …
The Importance Of Person And Place In Predicting Prostate Cancer Incidence And Mortality Among United States Veterans Seeking Veterans Health Administration Care, Peter Georgantopoulos
The Importance Of Person And Place In Predicting Prostate Cancer Incidence And Mortality Among United States Veterans Seeking Veterans Health Administration Care, Peter Georgantopoulos
Theses and Dissertations
T Introduction: There are several unique characteristics in the epidemiology of prostate cancer (PrCA) that make it an interesting and important cancer to study. The first is that while prostate cancer is the most common cancer that men develop, it is one of the least common cancers that men die from. This indolent nature of PrCA has led to the idiom among health scientists that “men are more likely to die with PrCA than due to PrCA”. Just like other cancers, several individual-level risk factors (e.g., family history of the disease, age, and race) are well established for both PrCA …
The Effect Of Neighborhood Characteristics And Acculturation On Vegetable Intake Among U.S. Hispanics, Anna Victoria Mesa
The Effect Of Neighborhood Characteristics And Acculturation On Vegetable Intake Among U.S. Hispanics, Anna Victoria Mesa
Theses and Dissertations
The growing prevalence of chronic disease among the U.S. Hispanic population has drawn increasing attention to modifiable behaviors such as diet in an effort to curb the burden of disease among this population. While factors affecting dietary intake among U.S. Hispanics have been largely studied, this study broadens the scope of existing analyses from examining the role of individual-level factors, including acculturation, to also include environmental factors such as neighborhood ethnic composition. Multilevel mixed modeling was employed to test the interaction of individual acculturation with neighborhood ethnic composition to predict vegetable intake among a sample of U.S. Hispanics. Individuals who …
Neuroanatomical Correlates Of Speech And Melody Repetition In Chronic Stroke, Sarah Elizabeth Bradford
Neuroanatomical Correlates Of Speech And Melody Repetition In Chronic Stroke, Sarah Elizabeth Bradford
Theses and Dissertations
The ability to repeat speech is impaired in most individuals with aphasia. Recent evidence suggests damage to area Spt (boundary of the parietal and temporal lobes at the Sylvian fissure) may cause the repetition difficulties commonly seen in aphasia. This study examined if such repetition impairments are specific to speech or reflect a more general repetition deficit, and determined how regional and network brain damage predict repetition impairments. Participants in the chronic phase of stroke (N=47) listened to a series of ten five-second melodies that consisted of six tones and repeated the melody (by humming) following its presentation. The participants’ …

Spiritual Care In Cancer Genetic Counseling: Patient Perceptions Of Methods, Christopher Michael Spencer
Theses and Dissertations
The integration of spirituality into medical care is a growing area of debate among professionals, involving a delicate balance between serving patients who may benefit from this without alienating those who would not. To date, little research has targeted spirituality in cancer genetic counseling, particularly concerning the various methods a genetic counselor can use to address spirituality with their patients. A paper questionnaire was created and distributed to patients following their cancer genetic counseling appointments to gain insight on their perception of these methods. Fifty-two participants completed this questionnaire. The eight different spiritual integration methods presented each showed positive responses …

The surgical risk assessment tool risk stratifies the patient based on the urgency of the procedure, the type of procedure, and the patients overall medical disease state. The Surgical Risk Tool determines patients with surgical risk scores of 9 or greater require medical and/or cardiac clearance in addition to hemoglobin A1C of 8 or less and …
Parental Experience With Whole Exome Sequencing Reanalysis And Its Impact On The Diagnostic Odyssey, Nicole D. Lucas
Parental Experience With Whole Exome Sequencing Reanalysis And Its Impact On The Diagnostic Odyssey, Nicole D. Lucas
Theses and Dissertations
Advances in genomic technology and an increase in the number of gene-disease associations have helped reduce the number of individuals living without a diagnosis. Whole exome sequencing (WES) analyzes the entire human exome in an attempt to determine if there is a molecular etiology for individuals who remain undiagnosed after other clinical or molecular investigations. Still, WES leaves most individuals undiagnosed, resulting in feelings of disappointment and uncertainty. Individuals who remain undiagnosed after WES can subsequently undergo WES reanalysis later due to improvements in bioinformatics, software updates, and an increase in known genedisease associations. This is the first study, to …
The Impact Of Communication Deficits On Puberty And Sexual Development In Adolescents On The Autism Spectrum, Ashton Wolfe
The Impact Of Communication Deficits On Puberty And Sexual Development In Adolescents On The Autism Spectrum, Ashton Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Transitioning into a sexually mature adult is a challenging time for both an adolescent with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and his or her family. Sexual development begets challenges due to the demands it places on the social and communication skills needed to explore developmental changes that are occurring physically, emotionally and hormonally. A diagnosis of ASD is largely established by quantifying impediments in social and communication skills through observation. With deficits in these skills, one can assume that social and communication difficulties can create obstacles in the sexual development of affected individuals. Our study used quantitative and qualitative measures to …

Interactive Effects Of Domoic Acid Allelopathy, Salinity, And Eutrophication On Estuarine Phytoplankton Community Structure, Elise Van Meerssche
Interactive Effects Of Domoic Acid Allelopathy, Salinity, And Eutrophication On Estuarine Phytoplankton Community Structure, Elise Van Meerssche
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal regions and estuaries are particularly sensitive to the increase in nutrient loading and river runoff, threatening the ecosystems with possible spreads in harmful algal blooms (HABs). As an example, blooms of toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species can release acute concentrations of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) in the water column. When ingested at concentrations higher than 20 ppm, DA can cause the death of marine birds, marine mammals and even humans. The main objectives of my research were to determine the drivers of Pseudo-nitzschia abundance and toxicity and to assess how these drivers influenced the phytoplankton community structure and DA allelopathy. …
Mechanisms Of Rad51d-Dependent Repair Of Dna And Telomere Damage Induced By Interstrand Crosslinking Agents And Thiopurines, Nicole M. Reilly
Mechanisms Of Rad51d-Dependent Repair Of Dna And Telomere Damage Induced By Interstrand Crosslinking Agents And Thiopurines, Nicole M. Reilly
Theses and Dissertations
Mutations in homologous recombination (HR) genes increase genomic instability, an enabling characteristic of cancer. However, the status of these same genes can also determine chemotherapy outcomes. RAD51D is a breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility gene that is an important component of HR. Mammalian cells defective for RAD51D have extensive chromosomal aberrations and are more sensitive to the interstrand crosslink-inducing agent mitomycin C (MMC) and the thiopurine 6-thioguanine (6TG). Previously, the RNF138 E3 ubiquitin ligase was identified to promote RAD51D ubiquitination, and loss of RNF138 also increased cellular sensitivity to MMC. Ubiquitination assays were used to show that a 3-ubiquitin modification …
Initiating The Loeb Criteria In Long-Term Care, Janice Khauslender
Initiating The Loeb Criteria In Long-Term Care, Janice Khauslender
Theses and Dissertations
Urinary tract infections are one of the most commonly reported infections in long-term care. Current practices often rely on non-specific symptoms, rather than specific genitourinary symptoms, to aid in the decision to obtain a urine culture. The literature does not support this practice due to the high prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among long-term care patients, which does not have adverse outcomes when untreated. Antibiotics do not eradicate asymptomatic bacteriuria and place patients at risk of adverse reactions and increased risk of multi-drug resistant organisms. This clinical improvement project applied the Loeb criteria in two long-term care facilities to reduce the …
Kv7 Channels Of The Urinary Bladder Smooth Muscle: Functional Roles And Therapeutic Potential, Aaron Provence
Kv7 Channels Of The Urinary Bladder Smooth Muscle: Functional Roles And Therapeutic Potential, Aaron Provence
Theses and Dissertations
Overactive bladder (OAB) is a pervasive and debilitating condition for which effective therapeutic modalities are lacking. As potential novel pharmacological targets for lower urinary tract dysfunction, our recent studies have demonstrated voltage-gated KV7 channels (KV7.1-KV7.5) to be functionally expressed in detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) of the urinary bladder. Nonetheless, the specific roles of individual KV7 channel subtypes remains poorly understood. Using Western blot, immunocytochemistry, isometric DSM tension recordings, ratiometric fluorescence Ca2+ imaging, and patch-clamp electrophysiology, we demonstrated expression and key physiologic roles for the KV7.2/KV7.3 channels in guinea pig DSM using the novel and selective KV7.2/KV7.3 channel opener N-(2-Chloro-5-pyrimidinyl)-3,4-difluorobenzamide (ICA-069673). …

Body Mass Index Trajectories And The Relationship Between Stressful Life Changes And Nutrition-Related Health Outcomes Among United States Army Soldiers, Julianna Marie Jayne
Theses and Dissertations
Body mass index (BMI) has risen among members of the military, though to a lesser degree than in civilian populations. BMI as an anthropometric tool has been essential for population surveillance and documenting the obesity epidemic and its health consequences. One use for BMI in population surveillance is to model the BMI trajectories of a population over time. Many studies are available on the BMI trajectories and determinants of BMI in civilians, but few studies of this nature in military populations exist. Establishing the shape and determinants of BMI trajectories among Soldiers is critical given the importance of weight management …

Intervention For Women In Costa Rica Who Are Discouraged And Have Food Insecurity And Excess Body Weight, Tatiana Martínez-Jaikel
Theses and Dissertations
ntroduction: The coexistence of food insecurity and excess body weight has been wellrecognized by researchers, and it has been documented in women, but not men. Both food insecurity and excess body weight have multiple consequences for physical and mental health. Concerns have been raised about interventions aimed to reduce food insecurity because these programs might contribute to excess body weight, particularly in adult women. Our previous in-depth qualitative research in Costa Rica showed that discouragement was the primary link in the coexistence of food insecurity and excess body weight among Costa Rican women, and that the family and existing gender …
