An Off-Season Brace-Free Neuromuscular Ankle Training Program Among Brace- Reliant And Nonbrace-Reliant Division Ii Female Athletes, Katelyn Koeninger, Jillian Markus, Linsey James, Kristen Thomas, Heidi Neitzke, Robert Topp, Joseph A. Brosky Jan 2017

An Off-Season Brace-Free Neuromuscular Ankle Training Program Among Brace- Reliant And Nonbrace-Reliant Division Ii Female Athletes, Katelyn Koeninger, Jillian Markus, Linsey James, Kristen Thomas, Heidi Neitzke, Robert Topp, Joseph A. Brosky

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Background: Neuromuscular training (NMT) has been shown to be effective in preventing recurrent ankle injuries. However, the NMT effect during the off-season in athletes who wear and those who do not wear an ankle brace during their sport season remains undetermined.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an off-season bracefree neuromuscular ankle training program on ankle functional ability among female athletes who wore and those who did not wear an ankle brace during the sport season.

Study Design: This study included a pre- and posttest 2-group cohort.

Methods: In this study, division II female …

The Effect Of Kinesiology Tape On Pain And Neck Range Of Motion After Cervical Manipulation, Jay Greenstein, Tracey Mcnamara, Barton Bishop, Jena Etnoyer-Slaski, Robert Topp Jan 2017

The Effect Of Kinesiology Tape On Pain And Neck Range Of Motion After Cervical Manipulation, Jay Greenstein, Tracey Mcnamara, Barton Bishop, Jena Etnoyer-Slaski, Robert Topp

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Background: Annually, 30%–50% of adults will experience some form of debilitating neck pain. One approach to treating neck pain is cervical manipulation. This treatment modality has, at times, been reported to result in a short-term increase in pain, which in turn has been linked to reduced neck range of motion (ROM). Elastic therapeutic tape (ETT) has been shown to reduce musculoskeletal pain, although limited research has been conducted to determine if ETT can mitigate pain and facilitate neck ROM following cervical manipulation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the pain and neck ROM among patients with acute …

Adhesion Of Three Brands Of Elastic Therapeutic Tape, Robert Topp, Jena L. Slaski, Barton N. Bishop, Phil Page Jan 2017

Adhesion Of Three Brands Of Elastic Therapeutic Tape, Robert Topp, Jena L. Slaski, Barton N. Bishop, Phil Page

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare, over a period of 5 days, the rate of adhesion of TheraBand® Kinesiology Tape (TKT) with either KT Tape® (KT) or Kinesio® Tex Gold (KTEX) under 25% elongation among healthy adults.

Methods: In this study, 2 independent cohorts of 20 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to simultaneously receive applications of 2 brands of deidentified elastic therapeutic tape (ETT) applied to their lower back at 25% elongation. Cohort 1 received TKT and KTEX tape, whereas cohort 2 received TKT and KT. Data were collected at 1 h (D1), 3 days (D3), and …

Comparison Between Rigid Double Upright And Lace-Up Ankle Braces On Ankle Range Of Motion, Functional Performance, And User Satisfaction Of Brace Characteristics, Kristin Dierker, Elizabeth Levay, Joseph A. Brosky, Robert V. Topp Jan 2017

Topp

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Background: Braces are often used before returning to activity following ankle sprains and also prophylactically in sports considered the high risk for ankle sprains. The purpose of this study was to compare range of motion (ROM) limitations, functional performance, and satisfaction of rigid double upright and lace-up braces. Subjects: In total, 30 healthy adults >18 years of age (Mean, 22.6 6 2.7 years) without lower extremity injury and involved in regular physical activity participated in this study.

Materials/Methods: Ankle ROM assessment and lower extremity performance testing (figure-of-8 hop, side hop, 6-m single-limb crossover, and square hop) was administered under the …

A Preliminary Study Into The Effect Of 2 Resistance Training Modes On Proprioception Of Subjects With Knee Osteoarthritis, Robert Topp, Matthew Pifer Jan 2017

A Preliminary Study Into The Effect Of 2 Resistance Training Modes On Proprioception Of Subjects With Knee Osteoarthritis, Robert Topp, Matthew Pifer

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a common health problem accompanied by pain and functional declines. Resistance training can reduce pain and functional declines and may also improve proprioception of the OA-affected knee.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in proprioception among adults with knee OA who underwent 16 weeks of dynamic or isometric resistance training with those in control.

Study Design: This study is a 3-group test–retest clinical trial.

Methods: In total, 69 community-dwelling subjects completed proprioception assessments of both knees at baseline and following 16 weeks of their respective intervention. At baseline, subjects …

The Short-Term Effects Of 2 Different Cryotherapy Methods On Acute And Subacute, Noncomplicated, Bilateral Neck Pain, Barton N. Bishop, Dean E. Jacks, Jay S. Greenstein, Robert Topp, Allen Huffman Jan 2017

The Short-Term Effects Of 2 Different Cryotherapy Methods On Acute And Subacute, Noncomplicated, Bilateral Neck Pain, Barton N. Bishop, Dean E. Jacks, Jay S. Greenstein, Robert Topp, Allen Huffman

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Background: Cryotherapy has since long been used by physical therapists and chiropractors in the management of acute pain; more recently, its use has been shown to be effective in managing chronic pain. Multiple studies have shown that both ice and menthol reduce blood flow to the affected area and help control pain; however, there is limited research to determine the form of cryotherapy that works better on individual patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a cold pack and menthol topical gel on reports of pain among individuals with neck pain.

Methods: In this …
