Platelets To The Rescue? A Literature Review Of The Safety And Efficacy Of Platelet-Rich Plasma For Symptomatic Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Timothy Simonich

Osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the most common joint disorders in the United States with rising prevalence due to obesity and an aging population. Regarding non-surgical approaches to management, there has been growing interest in the use of intra-articular injections with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

- The fact that shoulder pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care shows that clinicians must have an arsenal of quality interventions to treat this problem.
- The need for quality research and evidenced based guidelines are necessary to educate clinicians on their treatment options, the efficacy of those treatments, and their safety profiles.

Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care. Therefore, it is important that we have quality evidenced based treatments to guide clinicians in treating shoulder pain. I examined in this review whether corticosteroid injection into the glenohumeral joint or oral NSAIDs was more effective in reducing shoulder pain as well as the side effects associated with each treatment modality. Search methods included the PubMed and Cochrane databases. Only studies comparing corticosteroid injection and oral NSAIDs were included and not each treatment individually. In conclusion, corticosteroid injections into the glenohumeral joint accelerate pain relief but have equal …
Superior Capsular Reconstruction In The Active Population With A Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tear, Hernandez Emmanuel
Superior Capsular Reconstruction In The Active Population With A Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tear, Hernandez Emmanuel
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The prevalence of rotator cuff tears is a leading cause of upper extremity functional disability and affects people across the lifespan. The primary age groups that are diagnosed include young adults as well as the elderly population. Early diagnosis and identification of rotator cuff injuries are paramount for the appropriate treatment to be facilitated. Approximately one-fifth of rotator cuff tears (RCT) are diagnosed as “massive” and prove to be difficult for orthopedic surgeons to repair. If the massive RCT is also diagnosed as “irreparable”, surgical intervention is technically difficult and is a challenging procedure. Historically, treatment options have been limited …

Approximately one-fifth of rotator cuff tears (RCT) are diagnosed as “massive” and prove to be difficult for orthopedic surgeons to repair. If the massive RCT is also diagnosed as “irreparable”, surgical intervention is technically difficult and can be extremely challenging. Historically, treatment options have been limited for the young population to invasive surgical intervention or conservative measures such as physical therapy and pharmacologic …

• Healthy articular cartilage protects and provides smooth functioning of the joint. The deterioration of the articular cartilage leads to the crippling disease known as osteoarthritis (OA).
• OA is a leading cause of disability in the United States. Although some of the current treatment modalities, along with pharmacological treatment, may offer short term improvement with pain and function, they do not offer long term relief, and are ineffective in preventing the progression of OA.
• In advanced stages, surgery in the form of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is sometimes needed. This is an invasive procedure and typically requires hospitalization. …
Artificial Disc Replacement As An Alternative To Lumbar Spinal Function In The Treatment Of Chronic Low Back Pain, Jennifer Polniak
Artificial Disc Replacement As An Alternative To Lumbar Spinal Function In The Treatment Of Chronic Low Back Pain, Jennifer Polniak

Chronic low back pain leads to activity limitations for the patient and widespread burdens on health care systems. Lumbar fusion has been the “gold standard” surgery for severe chronic low back pain non-responsive to conservative treatment, however it has been associated with continued limitations in spinal mobility. This study was executed in order to compare an alternative surgical intervention, artificial disc replacement, with lumbar spinal fusion in the treatment of chronic low back pain in terms of long term spinal function. Literature searches of trials, guidelines and systematic reviews within the past 5 years were completed exploring surgical procedures, associated …

• Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of scoliosis. It affects 2-4 percent of adolescents aged 10-16 years. Although most adolescents diagnosed with scoliosis will not develop clinical symptoms, ten percent will progress and require medical intervention due to the potential for rib deformity and respiratory compromise as well as significant emotional distress due to aesthetic changes in appearance. Primary care providers should be prepared to evaluate and recommend treatment when idiopathic scoliosis is discovered or addressed by the patient. Three major factors that determine whether scoliosis will progress are patient gender, magnitude of curve on presentation, …
