Attitudes And Practices Among College Students Relative To Personal Listening Device Usage And Hearing Conservation, Molly Grace Williams Jan 2016

Attitudes And Practices Among College Students Relative To Personal Listening Device Usage And Hearing Conservation, Molly Grace Williams

Honors Theses

As technology has advanced, the popularity of personal listening devices (PLD) has become widespread among the millennial generation. It is normal in today's culture to see members of the millennial generation using their PLDs in most any setting. Due to this growth in popularity and usage of PLDs, there is an increased and relatively undocumented opportunity for noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) among the people in the millennial generation. In order to research the effects of this shift in culture relative to PLD usage, college-aged members of the millennial generation were asked to participate in a study via word of …

Variability In Antibacterial Chemical Defenses In Caribbean Sponges Of The Genus Aplysina, Savannah Stockton Jan 2016

Variability In Antibacterial Chemical Defenses In Caribbean Sponges Of The Genus Aplysina, Savannah Stockton

Honors Theses

Coral reefs represent one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth, providing habitat for at least 25% of all marine species. Coral ecosystems are faced with many stressors, both physical and biological, that are causing their continuing decline. Understanding the impacts of these stressors, and the resilience of coral reefs, is important to the long-term survival of these critical ecosystems. As a major constituent of marine communities, sponges are an important phylum contributing to the ecology of coral reefs. Like other components of coral reef habitats, sponges also face a wide variety of biological stressors including pathogens, predators, and competitors. …

Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel Jan 2016

Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel

Honors Theses

Hereditary angioedema is characterized by recurrent swelling of the extremities, larynx, and gastrointestinal tract. While type I and type II hereditary angioedema result from a C1-inhibitor deficiency, a new variant of the disease, type III hereditary angioedema, was recently discovered in individuals with functioning levels of the C1-inhibitor. Ongoing research has postulated that increased activity of factor XII is responsible for this new form of hereditary angioedema because it causes overproduction of bradykinin. The purpose of the experiment was to identify inhibitors of factor XII. One hundred and seventy six molecules were screened through a dose response using Human Factor …

Evaluation Of The Prevalence And Treatment Trends Of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Population, Lauren Daigle Jan 2016

Evaluation Of The Prevalence And Treatment Trends Of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Population, Lauren Daigle

Honors Theses

Evidence for adherence to the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) screening and treatment guidelines for various health complications of diabetes in rural populations is limited. The ADA recommends annual foot and eye exams and supports the use of the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (SWM) to detect signs of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study evaluated the prevalence and treatment trends of DPN among patients with diabetes in a rural population. Fifty-two individuals over the age of 18, with known Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes mellitus, were recruited to participate. Participants were asked to respond to a 29-item, multiple choice and freeform question …

Patient Experiences With Small-Scale Pharmacy Compounding, Morgan Cawthon Jan 2016

Patient Experiences With Small-Scale Pharmacy Compounding, Morgan Cawthon

Honors Theses

Investigators examined patients' use, knowledge and perceptions of pharmacy compounding at an independent compounding pharmacy in Mandeville, Louisiana. Data were collected using a self-administered survey that patients could complete in hard-copy in the pharmacy or at home, or online using Qualtrics. Investigators found that, in some instances, patients who use compounded medications, or have a member of their household who uses compounded medications, may be more knowledgeable or have more positive perceptions of compounded medications. However, patients who did not have experience with compounds were not unknowledgeable about the practice and did not report any negative perceptions of compounding. These …

The Olfactory System In Schizophrenia: An Rsfmri Study Of The Piriform Cortex, Sara Kiparizoska Jan 2016

The Olfactory System In Schizophrenia: An Rsfmri Study Of The Piriform Cortex, Sara Kiparizoska

Honors Theses

This thesis is a study of rsfMRI imaging in order to examine coactivation patters of the piriform cortex between healthy subjects and people with schizophrenia. As part of the olfactory system, the piriform cortex is an integral part of the smell sensation. Our studies showed that coactivation among the piriform cortex and other sensory brain regions differ in people with schizophrenia compared to healthy subjects. People with schizophrenia exhibit patterns of less coactivation among their sensory brain regions compared to control subjects, specifically the intracalcarine cortex, the right planum temporale, and the left occipital lobe. The purpose of this study …

Exploration In The Effectiveness Of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle Formulations In Enhancing Ocular Delivery Of Win 55, 212 In The Management Of Glaucoma, Emily Ann Nesbit Jan 2016

Exploration In The Effectiveness Of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle Formulations In Enhancing Ocular Delivery Of Win 55, 212 In The Management Of Glaucoma, Emily Ann Nesbit

Honors Theses

Glaucoma is a progressive and degenerative ocular disease which, without proper treatment, can result in permanent blindness. Due to a complex organization of lipophilic and hydrophilic ocular membranes, topical delivery of therapeutic agents has also proved to be a challenging task. Cannabinoids, such as Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering and neuroprotective capabilities. Due to the unfavorable physiochemical characteristics of these molecules, delivery into the eye through a topical route is very difficult. Previous research has shown that prodrug derivatization and formulations such as solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) improve the physiochemical characteristics and ocular bioavailability of such molecules. WIN …

Autism Spectrum Disorder: How Does Transitional Planning From Preschool To Elementary School Benefit Educational And Social Success?, Shakeika K. Everett Jan 2016

Autism Spectrum Disorder: How Does Transitional Planning From Preschool To Elementary School Benefit Educational And Social Success?, Shakeika K. Everett

Honors Theses

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder that impacts millions of people worldwide on a daily basis. While most adults with autism have received, and continue to receive, the proper assistance in engaging in everyday life, children with autism face more challenges that impacts their engagement socially. Many intervention methods have been researched and implemented to assist in communication and social involvement for children with ASD. However, little research exists on helping young children with ASD effectively transition, both academically and socially, from one educational environment to another. This research will contain a case study of a six-year-old child enrolled …

Redox-Sensitive Block Copolymer Nanoparticle Preparation And Characterization, Mary Virginia Portera Jan 2016

Redox-Sensitive Block Copolymer Nanoparticle Preparation And Characterization, Mary Virginia Portera

Honors Theses

The purpose of the research conducted in this project was to add to a wealth of knowledge concerning chemotherapy. Although chemotherapy has been used since Paul Ehrlich's discover of Salvarsan's ability to kill Treponema pallidum (the bacterium that causes syphilis), today the term chemotherapy is mostly used in conjunction with cancer treatment. There have been many successful chemotherapy drugs produced throughout the years, but a constant problem with chemotherapy is the fact that it also affects noncancerous cells. The topic of this research investigated targeted drug delivery systems that incorporate paclitaxel, a hydrophobic chemotherapy drug. This research mainly focused on …

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates diagnostic outcomes of infants referred to the University of Mississippi Speech and Hearing Center between January 2010 and September 2014. Data were collected on the reason for referral, eventual diagnosis, appointment attendance, and distance traveled of the patients referred. A total of 177 patients were collected. It was determined that UMSHC reaches EDHI goals for most patients who receive a diagnosis. An overwhelming majority of patients referred were due to newborn hearing screening failure, and most patients received a diagnosis of within normal limits. Those patients who never received a diagnosis had poor attendance which seemed to …

Terpenes And Flavonoids From Salvia Apiana And Their Affinities To Cannabinoid And Opioid Receptors, Taylor Hayes

Honors Theses

Salvia apiana (white sage, Lamiacae family) plant is native to southern California and parts of Mexico. Some Native American tribes local to this region consider S. apiana to be sacred and burn the leaves as incense for purification ceremonies. The plant has been used to treat sore throats, coughs, chest colds, upper respiratory infections, and poison oak rashes. Native Americans widely used this plant in traditional Chumash healing. Infusion of the leaves is used as a diaphoretic and diuretic. The aqueous ethanolic extract of S. apiana showed moderate activity towards the CB1 receptor (58.3% displacement). The extract was fractionated on …
