Background: Maternal health care providers’ implicit racial biases affect quality of care and have serious repercussions, including significantly increased rates of maternal mortality among Black women. Implicit bias training, particularly involving multipronged approaches stretched over time, is effective at increasing bias awareness and gaining practical skills to prevent bias from impacting patient care. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to elevate implicit bias awareness and use of evidence-based strategies by resident physicians in order to decrease negative outcomes for Black women receiving maternity care. Background: There is an increasing need for healthcare institutions to become more aware of how provider biases can affect patient outcomes and contribute to health care disparities for Black and other diverse populations. Implicit biases can result in poor patient outcomes and a breakdown in trust between patients and health care providers.

Purpose: To educate nurse residents on the use of the Kinesics, Inclusive, Non-biased and Deliverable KIND, Communications technique to decrease biases during interactions.

This photo essay is the product of a partnership between Prof. Krista Harper, the Sajó River Association for Environment and Community Development, and community organizer Judit Bari. The project took place in a small city in northeastern Hungary hit hard by factory closings since the collapse of state socialism in 1989. The Roma community, about 20% of the town’s population, has been especially vulnerable. A team of six young people participated as photographers and discussion participants, working closely with Harper and Bari. Other community members joined discussions of the images.
