Background

Interprofessional education (IPE) prepares students to work in collaborative teams (Burin et al., 2009). Educators use a variety of methods to develop and enhance teamwork skills (Fox et al., 2018).

Standardized patient (SP) simulations allow students to practice skills in safe environments (Herge et al., 2013) and respond to situations as they would under natural conditions (McGaghie, 1999). As an active learning experience, SP simulations help students break through the “illusion of understanding” (Syinicki & McKeachie, 2001 p. 190).

Kirkpatrick posits a hierarchy of changes as a result of training/education (Kirkpatric, 1979). At the highest level is transfer of …

Concept-based curricula are being implemented in nursing education as a means to shift the emphasis from content to an emphasis on concepts and conceptual learning (Giddens & Brady, 2007). This paradigm shift requires concomitant changes in how faculty teach and how students learn. In concept-based curricula, teachers use student-centered learning activities, such as case studies, questions, or problems to engage students in active learning (Giddens, Caputi, & Rodgers, 2015).

Spinal arachnoiditis (SA) is an extremely rare and delayed complication of intracranial subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). SA is an inflammatory process leading to chronic fibrosis of the spinal cord. Possible pathophysiology is a two-staged disease of initial inflammatory reaction secondary to SAH, followed by a “free interval phase” prior to delayed adhesive phase (i.e. SA). The clinical course can be complicated and is the cause of major morbidity.

Reorganization Of Thalamic Intrinsic Connectivity Following Anterior Temporal Lobectomy, Xiaosong He, Chaitanya Ganne, Michael R. Sperling, Ashwini Sharan, Joseph I. Tracy

Department of Neurosurgery Posters

The thalamus has played a crucial role in determining surgical outcome following anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (He, et al., 2017). Before successfully quantifying the impact of the thalamus on ATL outcomes, this structure’s own intrinsic connectivity must be understood. Accordingly, we characterize thalamic intrinsic connectivity through resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) longitudinally, exploring its change pre- to post-surgery.

Leading Causes Of Death In Vietnam, Lindsey Roth

CwiC Posters

Vietnam is currently facing a public health crisis. Rates of chronic and preventable diseases are climbing, in addition to mortality rates from these diseases. If nothing is done to halt these rising rates, the health of the Vietnamese people will only continue to decline. Although there may be many factors contributing to these high death rates due to chronic diseases, risky health behaviors, such as smoking, and the state of the healthcare system can be considered two main contributors to the leading causes of death in Vietnam. The high smoking rates and high costs of healthcare are hindering the health …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Introduction

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have been useful to generate differentiated progenies for cell replacement therapy, and disease models. The Parkinson’s Disease (PD) field was arguably one of the first to have embraced the promise of stem cells. However, regardless of the differentiation protocols used, cultures and grafts continue to contain multiple cell types with midbrain dopamine (mDA) neural progenitors (NPs) and neurons representing only a fraction of total cells in the dish or graft. During cell differentiation, recruitment of transcription factors (TFs) to repressed genes in euchromatin is essential to activate new transcriptional programs, which is impeded by condensed …

Book Club At Intern Orientation To Help Frame Professional Identity, Gretchen A. Diemer, Md, Emily Stewart, Md

Department of Medicine Posters

Background

Orientation is a whirlwind of regulations, reminders, rules and usually some social outlets. Very little of it helps new interns foster and celebrate their blossoming professional identity. The book club combats the hidden curriculum emphasizing regulations and policies by nurturing the growing sense of whom they are as physicians, actively placing value on the idea that they are developing a professional identity.
