The Ca(2+) sensor S100A1 is essential for proper endothelial cell (EC) nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activation. S100A1 levels are greatly reduced in primary human microvascular ECs subjected to hypoxia, rendering them dysfunctional. However mechanisms that regulate S100A1 levels in ECs are unknown. Here we show that ECs transfected with a S100A1-3' untranslated region (UTR) luciferase reporter construct display significantly reduced gene expression when subjected to low oxygen levels or chemical hypoxia. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that microRNA -138 (MiR-138) could target the 3'UTR of S100A1. Patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) or mice subjected to femoral artery resection (FAR) displayed …

“Giving Back” is a Jefferson tradition beginning with Dr. William Schmidt (JMCF1917-1959), who together with Dr. Frank Krusen (JMC 1921) served as Presidents of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) in 1943 and 1941 respectively. Other Jefferson graduates and faculty have also served as President of the Academy including Drs. Bender (1973), Ditunno (1981), Reinstein (1993), Melvin (1998) and recent presidents in 2009-2013, Betsy Sandel (JRR 1984), Mike Lupinacci (Jefferson Resident teaching faculty) and Alberto Esquenazi (JMCF 2000). Both Krusen and Schmidt were founding members of the American Board of PM&R in 1947. Over the years many …

OBJECTIVE: To describe a quality improvement project involving education and referral criteria to influence oncology provider referrals to a palliative care service.
METHODS: A single group post-test only quasi-experimental design was used to evaluate palliative care service (PCS) referrals following an intervention consisting of a didactic presentation, education outreach visits (EOV) to key providers, and referral criteria. Data on patient demographics, cancer types, consult volume, reasons for referral, pre-consult length of stay, overall hospital stay, and discharge disposition were collected pre-intervention, then post-intervention for 7.5 months and compared.
SETTING AND SAMPLE: Attending oncologists, nurse practitioner, and house staff from the …
