Problem Description: Historically, peer review has been compelled by regulatory and legislative mandates, such as the Joint Commission Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) requirement and the Health Care Quality Improvement Act (HCQIA) enacted by Congress in 1986. [1] However, these external mandates were focused on quality assurance, generally carrying punitive connotations and practically translated into rote compliance without the benefit of learning and improvement. In fact, the lack of quality improvement focus prompted the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to release its 2015 report, “Improving Diagnosis in Health Care,” stating that a “critical type of error in health care—diagnostic error—has received …

Effects Of Using Different Death Rate Metrics On The Analysis Of Drug-Overdose Death Rates And Socioeconomical Factors, William R. Duan, Dennis J. Hand Nov 2021

Effects Of Using Different Death Rate Metrics On The Analysis Of Drug-Overdose Death Rates And Socioeconomical Factors, William R. Duan, Dennis J. Hand

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Posters

Age-adjusted death rate (AADR) and raw death rate (RDD) used in drugoverdose studies typically involves death-record data and populationsurvey data. Difference can exist between the two data sources, leading to the so-called dual data-source error. Proportionate mortality avoids the error; however, no studies have been done comparing the conclusions drawn using the different metrics. The objective of this study is to evaluate the differences and merits of using different death-rate metrics in overdose analysis.

Abington Jefferson Health Posters

Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome that results from skeletal muscle breakdown and the release of intracellular enzymes into systemic circulation. We present a case of transaminitis and serum Creatinine Kinase (CK) levels exceeding 590,000 U/L without myoglobinuria or subsequent Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) after an acute psychotic episode. Case reports regarding such extreme serum CK elevations without myoglobinuria or ensuing renal failure in a non-traumatic case of rhabdomyolysis are minimal.

Higher rates of COVID-19 related hospitalization and death are reported in patients with underlying health conditions and advanced age as compared to the general population. While polyclonal immunity generated by vaccines has demonstrated protection against severe disease, vaccine response takes time and may be inadequate in some high-risk populations.1 Treatment with anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing monoclonal antibodies affords prompt, passive humoral immunity and has been shown in randomized, controlled trials to reduce rates of hospitalization and death from COVID-19 in high-risk ambulatory patients treated early in the course of infection.2,3 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued Emergency Use Authorization for …

COVID has created hardships in the lives of many persons. In a time of chaos, it was clear our institution needed an efficient workflow to track all students requiring quarantine, so that academic progress and student wellness would not be casualties.

This presentation reviews that workflow in detail, for the purpose of sharing strengths of the process for the greater GSA/OSR network’s benefit.

Noninvasive Amniotic Fluid Sampling To Establish Pk Of Azithromycin In Pregnancy, Rupsa Boelig, Edwin Lam, Ankit Rochani, Gagan Kaushal, Amanda Roman, Walter K. Kraft

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Posters

Background

PK studies to guide dosing of azithromycin (AZ) for pregnancy specific conditions, such as preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), and data on accumulation of AZ in fetal compartment are lacking. We aim to evaluate feasibility of non-invasive collection of amniotic fluid (AF), validate an assay for AZ in AF, and describe concentration of AZ in the amniotic cavity over one week following a single maternal dose.

Methods

Patients with PPROM treated with 1g AZ PO once and wore underwear lining pads to collect AF as it leaked. AF strained from each pad, up to 10cc collected, centrifuged and …
