Does Exercise Improve Lung Function In A Young Adult With Cystic Fibrosis?, Hanna Mackey
Does Exercise Improve Lung Function In A Young Adult With Cystic Fibrosis?, Hanna Mackey
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF), is an inherited genetic disease that leads to damage of the respiratory system. This disease not only impacts the lungs, but most organ systems of the body. Normal fluids in the body become thick, clogging important pathways in the body such as in the lungs and the pancreas. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of cardiorespiratory exercise training on lung function. The purpose of this study was to examine how introducing an aerobic-based exercise training program impacts patients with CF. The question is, “Does exercise improve lung function in a young adult with Cystic Fibrosis?”. METHODS: A …
Effectiveness Of Alternative Cerebral Palsy Treatments In Pediatrics: Systematic Review, Olivia Doria, Emily Fricker, Katrina Beery
Effectiveness Of Alternative Cerebral Palsy Treatments In Pediatrics: Systematic Review, Olivia Doria, Emily Fricker, Katrina Beery
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a multi-faceted movement disorder that affects the lives of approximately 500,000 children in America and millions across the globe. Traditional treatment involves physical and occupational therapies. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify, describe, and critically appraise the evidence about the effectiveness of alternative therapies including hippotherapy, aquatic therapy, and robotic gait training in children with CP. Researchers have found that these therapies improve gross motor function and balance. This review focuses on determining which age subpopulation would benefit most. A critical appraisal of studies is conducted and followed by recommendations for practice …
Åstrand-Rhyming And Ymca: A Compare And Contrast Literature Review Of Two Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Tests, Sean Roberts
Åstrand-Rhyming And Ymca: A Compare And Contrast Literature Review Of Two Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Tests, Sean Roberts
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In the world of exercise prescription there are two major protocols that are used to test an individual’s aerobic capacity at a submaximal intensity using a stationary bicycle. These protocols require participants to exercise at a constant work rate until a specified hear rate is reached. Data can then be analyzed to determine the participant’s aerobic capacity. The objective of this literature review is to look at these two tests – the Åstrand-Rhyming cycle ergometer test (ARCET) and the YMCA cycle ergometer test – and determine if one is better than the other for different populations and which one an …
Exercise And Cancer: A Summary Of Therapeutic Intervention, Cassandra Gillespie
Exercise And Cancer: A Summary Of Therapeutic Intervention, Cassandra Gillespie
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Background: There is strong evidence to support the benefits of exercise for cancer patients. However, there are few literature reviews that summarize exercise as it plays a role in all aspects of the cancer diagnosis including during cancer prevention, prehabilitation in surgical cancer patients, cancer treatment, and cancer recovery. This review serves to provide a comprehensive resource for students and health care professionals for research based findings related to the interactions between exercise and cancer.
Purpose: To summarize the current research findings involving the relationship between cancer and exercise.

Physical Therapy And The Integration Of Dry Needling, Katie Montgomery
Physical Therapy And The Integration Of Dry Needling, Katie Montgomery
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This research paper analyzes how the field of Physical Therapy has grown and evolved in the United States over the last sixty years. It also explores the education process of becoming a therapist, the responsibilities it entails, and the different treatment interventions therapist can use by taking a deeper look at the integration of dry needling techniques into the field of Physical Therapy.
Dry needling is defined and different techniques being utilized in the field currently are explained. Also discussed are locations where physical therapists are legally allowed to perform dry needling in the United States, the certification process, precautions …
Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Work Experience In Baccalaureate Junior And Senior Level Nursing Students, Mallory Wilson, Taylor Byers
Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Work Experience In Baccalaureate Junior And Senior Level Nursing Students, Mallory Wilson, Taylor Byers
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Background: New nursing graduates entering the healthcare fields have demonstrated competency with clinical skills during their education. However, limited experience with skill performance can leave them prone to clinical errors. Higher self-efficacy levels increase competency as individuals create higher goals and are more easily able to perform tasks. Therefore, work experience during nursing school may increase nursing students’ self-efficacy as they become comfortable performing clinical skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between employment in health care facilities and self-efficacy of clinical skills in undergraduate nursing students.
Methods: A non-experimental correlational study using convenience sampling, …
The Prevalence And Impact Of Chronic Pain In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Kathleen M. Davis, Julia E. Schwarz
The Prevalence And Impact Of Chronic Pain In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Kathleen M. Davis, Julia E. Schwarz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Chronic pain is a problem because it can have a large impact on activities of daily life of people, regardless of age. Few researchers have described the prevalence and impact of chronic pain in young adults, while even fewer have done so in the United States. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of chronic pain and the impact it has on daily life for undergraduate nursing students. The theoretical framework is guided on the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain. This cross-sectional, descriptive study uses convenience sampling and data collected through an online Qualtrics survey, which was …
Effect Of Physical Activity On Perceived Quality Of Life Of An Individual With Cerebral Palsy, Julia R. D'Agostino
Effect Of Physical Activity On Perceived Quality Of Life Of An Individual With Cerebral Palsy, Julia R. D'Agostino
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Regular exercise has a variety of benefits. When incorporated into an individual’s daily routine, exercise contributes to better overall health, less stress, higher self-esteem, and decreased risks for secondary diseases. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control center of the brain, resulting in physical impairment. Individuals with CP have limited means of exercise due to physiological, mental, and emotional obstacles. By incorporating regular exercise into their daily routines, individuals with cerebral palsy may gain physiological improvements, emotional and social benefits and improvements in overall quality of life. PURPOSE: To determine the effect that regular exercise has on …
