Framework And Architecture For The Management Of Event-Condition-Action (Eca) Rule Based Clinical Protocols, Kudakwashe Dube, Bing Wu, Jane Grimson

Conference papers

Computer-based support for the incorporation of clinical practice guidelines and protocol into daily practice has recently attracted a lot of research interest within the healthcare informatics area. The aim is not only to provide support for the flexible specification and execution of clinical guidelines or protocols but also the dynamic management of these guidelines or protocols. This paper presents a framework and architecture for the management of clinical protocols whose specification and execution models are based on the event-condition-action (ECA) rule paradigm.

Initiation Of Apoptosis In Cells Exposed To Medium From The Progeny Of Irradiated Cells: A Possible Mechanism For "Bystander" Induced Genomic Instability., Fiona Lyng, B. Maguire, B. Mcclean, C. Seymour, Carmel Mothersill Jan 2002

Initiation Of Apoptosis In Cells Exposed To Medium From The Progeny Of Irradiated Cells: A Possible Mechanism For "Bystander" Induced Genomic Instability., Fiona Lyng, B. Maguire, B. Mcclean, C. Seymour, Carmel Mothersill

Articles

Much evidence now exists regarding radiation-induced bystander effects, but the mechanisms involved in the transduction of the signal are still unclear. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways have been linked to growth factor-mediated regulation of cellular events such as proliferation, senescence, differentiation and apoptosis. Activation of multiple MAPK pathways such as the ERK, JNK and p38 pathways have been shown to occur after exposure of cells to radiation and a variety of other toxic stresses. Previous studies have shown oxidative stress and calcium signaling to be important in radiation-induced bystander effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate …

Fear Of Fatness Among Young Irish Adolescents : Association With Obesity, Reported Iron And Folate Intake, And Dental Health, Anne C. Griffin Jan 2002

Fear Of Fatness Among Young Irish Adolescents : Association With Obesity, Reported Iron And Folate Intake, And Dental Health, Anne C. Griffin

Doctoral

OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of fear of fatness (the desire to be thinner) and associated factors, including obesity, reported energy, iron and folate intakes. The difficulties in defining overweight among Irish children and an assessment of dietary and socio-economic factors related to dental caries and also reported in the group. METHODS: A one-year follow up study of 251 healthy schoolchildren at baseline (119 boys and 132 girls; mean age 11 years) attending 7 fee-paying (6 single- and 1-mixed sex) and 8 non-fee-paying (4 single- and 4 mixed-sex) schools in Dublin city center. Assessment of body image perceptions and satisfaction …

Safety Behaviour In The Construction Industry, Nick Macdonald, Victor Hrymak Jan 2002

Safety Behaviour In The Construction Industry, Nick Macdonald, Victor Hrymak

Reports

The influences on safety standards and employee safety behaviour was analysed on 18 large construction sites on the island of Ireland. The safety management and documentation of these sites was also analysed. The results are discussed at length together with comprehensive recommendations for the industry.

An Investigation Of The Safety Of High Risk Sandwich Bar Foods Through The Application Of Microbial Analysis, Temperature Monitoring And Microbial Predictive Modelling, Marie-Clare Maher Jan 2002

An Investigation Of The Safety Of High Risk Sandwich Bar Foods Through The Application Of Microbial Analysis, Temperature Monitoring And Microbial Predictive Modelling, Marie-Clare Maher

Masters

Rising incidents of food poisoning may be related to growing evidence of unsatisfactory temperature and hygiene practices in preparing and storing ready-to-eat foods. Four sandwich bar outlets in Dublin city center were observed regarding the quality of food handling and storage practices of chilled vacuum packed cooked chicken breast. A pilot microbial sampling plan proved Staphylococcus aureus was the major microorganism of concern. Microbial counts revealed a S. aureus count of ) cfu/g on chicken straight form the vacuum pack and a count of 10(3)-10(4) cfu/g after handling/preparation (cutting, slicing and blending) had occurred. This compared poorly to the upper …

Intrafamilial Phenotypic Variability In Friedreich Ataxia Associated With A G130v Mutation In The Frda Gene, Dominick Mccabe, Nicholas Wood, Fergus Ryan, Michael Hanna, Sean Connolly, David Moore, Janice Redmond, David Barton, Raymond Murphy Jan 2002

Intrafamilial Phenotypic Variability In Friedreich Ataxia Associated With A G130v Mutation In The Frda Gene, Dominick Mccabe, Nicholas Wood, Fergus Ryan, Michael Hanna, Sean Connolly, David Moore, Janice Redmond, David Barton, Raymond Murphy

Articles

Background: Most patients with Friedreich ataxia (FA) have a GAA trinucleotide repeat expansion in intron 1 of the FA gene (FRDA) on both arms of chromosome 9. However, some patients are compound heterozygotes and harbor a GAA expansion on one allele and a point mutation on the other. Compound heterozygous patients with FA who have a GAA expansion and a G130V mutation have been reported to have an atypical phenotype with a slow disease progression, minimal or no ataxia, or gait spasticity. Objective: To describe intrafamilial phenotypic variability in a GAA expansion/G130V mutation compound heterozygous family with FA. Setting: Tertiary …
