A Miniaturised Spectrometer Device For The Detection Of Nitrogen Dioxide In An Urban Environment, Brian Devine Oct 2013

A Miniaturised Spectrometer Device For The Detection Of Nitrogen Dioxide In An Urban Environment, Brian Devine

Doctoral

Monitoring of air pollutants, such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), that are toxic or environmentally damaging is a key metric for environmental protection agencies worldwide. There is a constant need to develop new technologies and methodologies that provide real-time, low cost pollution measurements over a broad range of sampling sites, particularly in urban and industrial areas. Typically, detection of pollutants in urban environments is performed using a variety of techniques, many of which are expensive, require complex setups and are in fixed locations. The novel system presented in this thesis is designed for portable, low cost and in-situ detection of pollutants …

Preparation And Characterisation Of Gold Nanocomposites For Use As Heterogeneous Catalysts In Green Chemistry., Anne E. Shanahan

Doctoral

Three supported gold nanocomposites, gold on titanium dioxide (Au/TiO2), gold on single walled Au/SWCNT and gold on carbon black (Au/P90) were prepared and systematically characterised using Scanning Electron Microscopy/Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy/Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/STEM/TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX), X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), (Nitrogen) N2 adsorption, Ultra Violet-Visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to probe the nanoparticle and support physical and chemical characteristics as well as the metal-support interactions. For all composites, the Au nanoparticles were found to be crystalline with a well-defined and narrow particle-size distribution centered between 4-10nm.

The Healthy Incentive For Pre-Schools (Hip) Project: The Development, Validation, Evaluation And Implementation Of An Healthy Incentive Scheme In The Irish Full Day Care Pre-School Setting., Charlotte Johnston Molloy

Doctoral

While many children are now cared for outside the home, inadequate nutrition and physical activity practices in pre-schools have been reported. This study aimed to develop a validated nutrition and health related evaluation tool and an education information resource for pre-schools, and determine whether their use can promote improved food service and nutrition and physical activity practices in this setting. Following a pilot phase undertaken in Co. Wicklow (n 12), pre-schools providing a full day care service in the Midland Area of Ireland were invited to participate in the study (n, 100). Direct observation was used to collect data (food …
