Determination Of The Effects Of Advanced Glycation End Products Receptor Polymorphisms And Its Activation On Structural Cell Responses And Inflammation In Asthma, Esra Bi̇rben, Ümi̇t Murat Şahi̇ner, Can Ömer Kalayci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Advanced glycation end products receptor (RAGE) is a pattern recognition receptor which attracted attention in chronic airway diseases recently. This study aimed to determine the association of RAGE with asthma and the cellular responses resulting from RAGE signaling pathway activation. Materials and methods: Asthmatic (n = 362) and healthy (n = 134) children were genotyped by PCR-RFLP. Plasma sRAGE levels were determined by ELISA. Lung structural cells were stimulated with AGEs (advanced glycation end products) and control BSA. Expressions of cytokines and protein levels were determined by real-time PCR and ELISA. Results: Gly82Ser and -374 T/A polymorphisms in RAGE …

Background/aim: Animal dander is one of the most common respiratory allergens in children, and there is evidence that cat sensitivity is a risk factor for asthma and allergic rhinitis. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate children with cat sensitivity and to identify their demographic and clinical characteristics. Materials and methods: Patients who were found to be sensitive to cats following skin prick tests performed in our allergy clinic over a period of one year (and two control groups), were included in the study. Patients in the study and control groups filled in a questionnaire including demographic and clinical …

Can Development Of Asthma And Bronchial Hyperreactivity Be Reduced By Subcutaneous Immunotherapy In Adult Patients With Allergic Rhinitis?, Fatma Merve Tepetam, Ci̇han Örçen, Zeynep Ferhan Özşeker, Di̇ldar Duman, Sema Saraç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Allergic rhinitis can be associated with bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) and create an increased risk for allergic asthma development. We aimed to investigate the effects of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) on BHR and asthma development in adult patients with allergic rhinitis. Material and methods: The retrospective case-control study was carried out between November 2018 and May 2019 in Süreyyapaşa Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital. In this study, data was recorded for patients with a mite and/or grasses/cereals pollen allergy who were tested for BHR before planned SCIT, and who had allergic rhinitis, with or without asthma. The …

Long-Term Efficiency Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bronchiectasis, And Asthma: Does It Differ?, Mustafa Engi̇n Şahi̇n, Seher Satar, Pinar Ergün Jan 2023

Long-Term Efficiency Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bronchiectasis, And Asthma: Does It Differ?, Mustafa Engi̇n Şahi̇n, Seher Satar, Pinar Ergün

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and aim: The long-term effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) and maintenance programs in obstructive pulmonary diseases have not been sufficiently investigated, particularly in diseases other than COPD. This retrospective study aimed to examine the long-term results of individualized comprehensive outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and methods: This study is a single-center, retrospective cohort study. Between 2010 and 2019, 269 patients with chronic airway obstruction were treated in our multidisciplinary PR center at a tertiary training and research hospital, and they were divided into three groups based on their diagnosis: COPD, bronchiectasis, and asthma. Patients' …
