The Efficacy Of Anakinra Compared To Standard Care Of Treatment For Covid-19: A Metaanalysis, Hamna Malik, Hira Bint Abdul Jabbar, Farah Latif, Azza Sarfraz, Zouina Sarfraz, Muzna Sarfraz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide, this study brings to light the link that anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, has in averting grave clinical outcomes. The objectives of this meta-analysis are to investigate the effects of anakinra in interventional groups compared to control/standard of care groups on mortality along with the provision of a prevalence estimate of the variables associated with death (C-reactive protein-CRP, ferritin, acute respiratory distress syndrome-ARDS). Materials and methods: According to the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, a systematic search was conducted from December 19, 2020, until December 10, 2021, with keywords including COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, …

Background/aim: Remdesivir, which was first developed for the treatment of Ebola disease but failed to meet expectations, has become hope in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for mortality and prognosis of adult moderate/severe COVID-19 patients treated with remdesivir, and safety and tolerability of 5 days of remdesivir treatment. Materials and methods: This multicenter prospective observational study was conducted in 14 centers in Turkey. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, multiorgan failure, or usage of vasopressors for septic shock, ALT > 5 × the upper limit of the normal range, or eGRF

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Tuberculosis-Related Mortality And Nitrous Oxide Emission Levels In The World With The Environmental Kuznets Curve Method, Şeri̇fe Torun, Kadi̇r Yilmaz, Şevket Özkaya, Şebnem Yosunkaya, Müşerref Şule Akçay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: It was aimed to analyze the relationship between tuberculosis-related mortality and nitrous oxide emission levels in the world with the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) Method. Materials and methods: WHO ICD-10 mortality list data and the World Bank Country Data (WBCD) were used between 1997 and 2017 for 12 countries. Cubic regression analysis was used for EKC Analysis. Results: The difference between male and female deaths between 1996 and 1998 has increased sharply since 1999. Male deaths consistently occurred significantly more than female deaths. There was a significant and negative correlation between Nitrous oxide emissions (% change from 1990) and …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Hyperchloremia On The Prognosis And Mortality Of Medical Intensive Care Patients: A Single-Center Study, Habi̇p Yilmaz, Başak Çakir Güney

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: While chloride (Cl) is the most abundant anion in the serum, it is unfortunately one of the most commonly disregarded laboratory test results routinely drawn upon admission into the medical intensive care unit (MICU). We aimed to investigate the relation between in-hospital mortality, different pathologies requiring admission to the MICU, serum Cl levels, and other biochemical tests in a tertiary center. Materials and methods: The prospective study included data from 373 patients admitted to the ICU of a tertiary care center between 2017 and 2019. Data of patients under 18, pregnant patients or patients who were in the MICU …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Backround/aim: In this study, the efficacy of an IL-6 antagonist, Tocilizumab, administered in the early period was studied in intensive care patients with COVID-19 pneumonia followed by hypoxic and systemic inflammation not receiving mechanical ventilation support. Materials and methods: Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who have signs of hypoxia and systemic inflammation and/or who have acute bilateral infiltrates on chest radiograph and who received tocilizumab treatment were compared with the patients who received standard medical therapy. Patients who were followed up with COVID-19 pneumonia and respiratory failure between March 2020 and March 2021 were retrospectively evaluated in the study. A 400 …

Can Surfactants Affect Mortality And Morbidity In Term Infants With Respiratory Failure?, Senem Alkan Özdemi̇r, Özlem Yilman, Şebnem Çalkavur, Tüli̇n Gökmen Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We aimed to discuss term infants who are given surfactant due to respiratory disorder according to the underlying etiology, the dose of surfactant administration, and the need for repeated surfactant administration. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study infants hospitalized in the 4th level neonatal intensive care unit during January 2019 and December 2021 and administered surfactant due to respiratory distress were included. Term infants given surfactant due to respiratory failure were included in the study through the data recording system. The number of surfactant doses, indications for administration, mortality, duration of hospitalization, intubation time, and inotrope use were …
