Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Metabolomics has the potential to provide putative biomarkers and insights into the pathophysiology and diagnosis of pediatric multiple sclerosis (pMS), which is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum metabolomics in pMS to help elucidate the pathophysiology of MS. Materials and methods: An untargeted approach was applied using the quadrupole time-of-flight liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (Q-TOF LC/MS) method to study plasma metabolites in patients with pMS (n = 33), patients with unclassified central nervous system demyelinating diseases (n = 6), and age-matched healthy …

Background/aim: Nonalcoholic fatty liver is one of the most common forms of liver disease and role of microRNAs (miRNAs) on this illness is currently unclear. It was aimed to evaluate the predictive role of circulating miR-33a and mir-200c on high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-induced fatty liver and vitamin D3 supplementation-related hepatic changes. Materials and methods: Twenty-four rats were randomized into three groups: sham (n = 8), experimental fatty liver group (n = 8), and fatty liver + vitamin D3 supplementation group (n = 8). In the treatment group, 10 µg/kg/week of vitamin D3 was given by orogastric tube weekly for …

Background/aim: Hyperlactatemia is a common finding in critically ill patients and has significant prognostic implications. However, a single lactate measurement has not been correlated to mortality consistently. In this study, we aimed to correlate the clinical efficacy of lactate clearance for the prediction of mortality in pediatric intensive care unit patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective observational study was performed in the pediatric intensive care unit in patients with lactate level >3 mmol/lt. Initial, 6th h, and 24th h lactate levels were recorded and lactate clearance was calculated using these values (lactate level at admission - level 6 h later …
