The Reduction Of The Laminectomy Membrane In Dogs By The Synovial Fluid-Soaked Absorbable Gelatin Sponge, Ahmet Özak, Ömer Beşalti, Ni̇hat Toplu, Y. Şükrü Çağlar, Faruk Akin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The reduction of the laminectomy membrane (LM) with synovial fluid soaked absorbable gelatin sponge (SSAGS) after laminectomy was investigated. Modified laminectomy of the first and second lumbar vertebra and concomitant full length durotomy were carried out in 16 mongrel dogs of different ages and sex. Two pieces of absorbable gelatin sponge (AGS-Gelfoam, Upjohn), soaked with 2 ml of synovial fluid taken from the shoulder joint, were implanted into the laminectomy defect in 8 dogs. Two pieces of AGS were implanted into the laminectomy defect in the control group of 8 dogs. Animals were allocated to 4 groups, each consisting of …

The Prevalence, Colonization Sites And Pathological Effects Of Gastric Helicobacters In Dogs, K. Serdar Di̇ker, Rifki Haziroğlu, Mehmet Akan, Serap Çeli̇k, Nalan Kabakçi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The prevalence and colonization sites of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of dogs, and their association with gastric pathology were investigated. Scraping cytology, culture, urease test and histology were used to detect helicobacters in the stomachs of necropsied dogs. Gastric Helicobacter spp. were detected in 103 (84.4%) of 122 dogs from 1 month to 14 years of age. The uncultured spiral organisms seen in the most of stomachs were designated as H. heilmannii. Microscopical examination of stained mucosal scrapings was found to be superior for the diagnosis of gastric helicobacters. Six (4.9%) spiral organisms were isolated from 122 stomachs and …

Leishmania Infantum In A Dog: Case Report, Remzi̇ Gönül, Seçki̇n Serdar Arun, Tamer Dodurka, Erol Handemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Leishmaniasis is a worldwide, parasitic disease found in the Mediteranean area, Africa, Asia and Central and South America that affects mainly dogs, humans, and rodents. Dogs are the domestic reservoirs of the visceral form so that early detection of canine infections including complex clinical features may be important in the control of lehismaniasis. In this article we compared the clinical and laboratory results of leishmaniasis, which was diagnosed immunologically and histologically in a dog.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fascia lata autografts in the prevention of adhesion development during tendon rupture healing in dogs. A total of 12 dogs were divided equally into 4 groups. After performing experimental tenotomy and tenorraphy of the left achilles tendon, it was covered with an autogenic fascia lata graft in place of the tendon sheath. Only classical tenotomy and tenorraphy were performed on the right achilles tendon as a control. After the operation, the extremities were protected for 21 days by a PVC bandage. Each tendon was injected with 0.5 ml contrast …

The selected mini-titanium plates were shaped according to the fractured bone and applied. All the animals were monitored 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 weeks postoperatively by means of clinical and radiological examinations. Twenty-one animals showed no postoperative complications; all the …

Ultrasonographic Evaluation Of Liver Damage And Obstruction Of The Biliary Tract In Experimentally Bile Duct Ligated Dogs, Remzi̇ Gönül, Yücel Meral, Abdullah Kayar, Utku Bakirel, Mehmet Erman Or, Gülbi̇n Şennazli, Aydin Gürel, Zi̇ya Aslan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The liver damage and obstructions of the biliary tract were evaluated ultrasonographically in experimentally bile duct ligated dogs. Seven healthy dogs of different breeds were used. The common bile duct was double ligated at the duodenal region after clinical and ultrasonographic examinations. After that, clinical examinations, biochemical analyses and examinations of the liver, gallbladder and biliary tract were done ultrasonographically over 6 weeks. All dogs were necropsied and macroscopic and histologic alterations were determined at the end of the study. It was determined that the levels of serum ALT, ALP, GGT and T. Bilirubin were (p < 0.001-0.05) statistically significantly increased after the operation in all dogs. As a result of ultrasonographic examinations, it was determined that the bile ducts and gallbladder were distended, the neck of the gallbladder was larger and more tortuous than normal, hypoechoic sludge was prominent in the gallbladder, and perivascular, multifocal hyperechoic areas appeared in the liver parenchyma toward the end of the study. These alterations were confirmed macroscopically and microscopically at the end of the autopsy in all dogs. We consider that as well as blood serum parameters, ultrasonographic examinations are useful in the early diagnosis of biliary diseases and in differentiating them from hepatic diseases.

Twelve mongrel dogs of different ages, and sex were used in the study. An experimentally induced 1cm gap in the facial nerve was repaired by free cable nerves with an epiperineural suture. The dogs were allotted into 3 equal groups. In the control group, the repaired site was not wrapped by any material. However, the …

Five mongrel dogs of different age (range 2 to 6 years) and sex (2 male and 3 female) were the study material. Facial paralysis was induced by neurectomy at the side of the facial nerve trunk passing through the stylomastoid foramen. The great auricular nerve (GAN) was freed, neurectomized behind the furcations and transposed to the distal part of the neurectomized facial nerve …

Dogs that had mixed infections of cestodes and nematodes were divided into two groups: the treatment group (10 dogs) and the control group (5 dogs). Dogs in the treatment group were treated orally with a single dose of 1 tablet/10 kg of nitroscanate (50 mg/kg). After the treatment, fecal samples were examined 5 times at intervals of 2 days and it was recorded that nitroscanate removed D. caninum (4 dogs) and T. leonina (7 dogs) in …

The drawer test was positive in 9 cases and indefinite in 6 of the cases suspected of having a rupture in the cranial cruciate ligament. In 2 cases, pain was present and in 4, swelling was observed in the joint. In the drawer test, in cases positive according to the radiographical examinations, the tibia was placed more cranially than the femur. In 4 cases, swelling was observed radiographically in the medial part of the …

Twenty dogs were used in this study. Following intramuscular administration of atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg, diazepam was given intravenously at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg. Following tranquillisation, etomidate at a dose of 2mg/kg and alfentanil at a dose of 0.02mg/kg were injected intravenously. With this anaesthetic protocol, anaesthesia lasting approximately 15 min was produced. When haematological parameters (haemogram and ALT, AST, BUN, TP, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The cardiovascular/respiratory and clinical effects of a xylazine-ketamine combination or a butorphanol-ketamine combination for the induction of anaesthesia in dogs were compared. A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.
