Evidence-Based Information About Intermittent Fasting In Diabetes Patients: Useful Or Harmful?, Mustafa Altay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: One of the most important components of treatment for diabetic patients is diet and healthy nutrition therapy. Calorie restriction is effective and without cost increases its appeal for both patients and physicians. Unfortunately, continuous calorie restriction is a difficult method. For this reason, alternative calorie restriction methods, such as intermittent fasting (IF), have been investigated by some researchers. Materials and methods: IF refers to a wide range of diet programmes covering periods of eating and fasting, which vary according to the different regimens. In this article, first, some general information will enable us to understand the concept of IF, …

In our study, we aimed to determine the symptoms that can be seen in prediabetes and diabetes and their prevalence and to determine the similarities and differences between the two groups. Materials and methods: Individuals who were diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, over the age of 18, literate, and accepted to collaborate were included in our study. The "Diabetes Symptoms Checklist Scale" was used by interviewing 321 participants, 161 prediabetic and 160 diabetic, face-to-face. Results: It has been found that the most common …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To explore the correlations between glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and glucose levels in older adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and methods: A total of 783 participants aged ≥60 years were enrolled. The 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was conducted and HbA1c was measured. The participants were divided into normal glucose tolerance (NGT)HbA1c, Pre-DMHbA1c, and T2DMHbA1c groups based on the HbA1c diagnostic criteria. The correlations between HbA1c and glucose levels of the OGTT were analyzed. Results: When HbA1c ≥ 6.5% in older people, HbA1c was positively correlated with Glucose 0 min and 120 min of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease, determined by environmental and genetic factors. Currently, the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene shows the strongest association with T2D. In this study, we investigated whether TCF7L2 gene polymorphisms are associated with T2D in a Turkish population. Materials and methods: Using PCR-RFLP and PCR-SSCP, we genotyped six intronic polymorphisms in the TCF7L2 gene, commonly associated with T2D, in 169 individuals with diabetes and 119 healthy controls. Results: We found that rs7903146 C -> T substitution in intron 3 (OR: 1.9, P = 0.005) and rs12255372 G -> T substitution in intron …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Patients with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of developing micro- and macrovascular complications. Retinopathy is one of the most important complications of diabetes whose pathophysiological cause has not yet been determined. One candidate may be platelet volume. In this study we aimed to investigate the association between mean platelet volume and diabetic retinopathy. Materials and methods: Mean platelet volume levels were investigated in type 2 diabetic patients with and without retinopathy, and in healthy participants. After reclassifying our diabetics in terms of the presence or absence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia, we compared their mean platelet volumes. We then …

Background/aim: Activation and size of platelets have been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of vascular complications in diabetes mellitus. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association of mean platelet volume with microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and methods: Mean platelet volume levels were investigated in healthy participants and type 2 diabetic patients with and without microalbuminuria. After their mean platelet volume values were compared, correlation of mean platelet volume with sex, duration of diabetes, microalbuminuria, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, creatinine clearance, and body mass index was examined. Results: Mean platelet volume …
