Dichelobacter nodosus is an essential causative agent of footrot in ruminants, particularly in sheep, goats and cattle. In this study, more than 100 footrot samples were collected from 4 different farming regions in New Zealand (NZ). Selective media were chosen and isolation and routine growth conditions were optimized for NZ D. nodosus serotypes. Approximately 1000 primary plates were anaerobically subcultured several times and examined with Gram staining in order to detect single colonies of D. nodosus. This study was conducted to determine the serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations at 60, 100, and 150 days of pregnancy and at 45 days of parturition in twin and single pregnant sheep. A total of 30 pregnant Akkaraman sheep in 2 groups (15 single pregnancies, 15 twin pregnancies), aged 3-5 years and weighing 40-50 kg were used. The blood samples were analyzed for serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations. The Seroprevalence Of Coxiellosis In Farmers And Cattle In Erzurum District In Turkey, Şenay Seyi̇toğlu, Zülal Özkurt, Ufuk Di̇nler, Bi̇ray Okumuş

Coxiellosis is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. This study conducted to determine the prevalence of coxiellosis in cattle and farmers in Eastern Turkey. A total of 230 cattle and 92 human sera were collected and tested for antibodies against C. burnetii by a commercial ELISA kit. The antibodies to C. burnetii were detected in 22 (9.56%) cattle and 18 (19.5%) healthy farmers. Seropositivity was found in 12 of 53 (22.6%) cattle with an abortion history, and 10 of 177 (5.6%) cattle without an abortion history (P < 0.05). There was a correlation between animal and human seroprevalence in the same district. It was observed that the seroprevalence of coxiellosis was higher in northern districts (32.4% in farmers and 15.4% in cattle) than in other districts (12.1% in farmers and 6.5% in cattle) both for humans and animals (P < 0.05). Coxiellosis was an important health problem in both humans and cattle, and the disease may cause abortion in cattle in Eastern Turkey.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants on the fermentation and aerobic stability characteristics of low dry matter corn silages. Corn was harvested at the milk stage. Inoculant-1188 (Pioneer^®, USA; Inoculant A) and Maize-All (Alltech, UK; Inoculant B) were used as homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants. In Vitro Effects Of Melatonin On Hyaluronidase Activity And Sperm Motility In Bull Semen, Sadetti̇n Tanyildizi, Tanzer Bozkurt, Osman Çi̇ftçi̇, Fati̇h Saki̇n

The effects of melatonin on hyaluronidase activity of semen and spermatozoa motility of Holstein bulls were investigation in vitro. Semen samples were divided into 5 equal parts and incubated (v/v) with melatonin at the doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM for 60 min. Percentages of spermatozoa motility, morphological abnormality and hyaluronidase activity of semen were determined at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 min during incubation. Results show that melatonin caused a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the spermatozoa motility, while causing a significant increase in the hyaluronidase activities of the semen. However, there was no significant difference in the percentages of abnormal spermatozoa when compared with control samples. Doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM of melatonin in bull semen decreased the percentage of spermatozoa motility in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The mean percentages of abnormal spermatozoa were not affected by melatonin treatment. However, it caused an increased hyaluronidase activity of bull semen. In conclusion, the existence of melatonin in bull semen has a significant effect on fertilization ability by affecting spermatozoa motility and hyaluronidase activity.

Effects Of Dietary Fluoride Levels On Growth, Serum Indexes And Antioxidant Systems In Growing Pigs, Xin Tao, Zi Rong Xu, Yi Zhen Wang

Ninety-six growing pigs were used to evaluate the effects of fluoride levels on growth performance, serum indexes and antioxidant systems. Four dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing fluorine (as NaF) to provide the following added fluorine levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that pigs consuming diets with 100 and 150 mg/kg fluorine added had poor growth performance, and most serum biochemical indexes were significantly altered compared to the control (P < 0.05). On the other hand, serum and liver MDA concentration significantly increased due to the addition of 150 mg/kg fluorine (P < 0.05). T-AOC levels and the activities of SOD, GSH-PX, CAT and GST of serum and liver in fluoride added groups decreased, most of which altered significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that excessive fluoride ingestion had an adverse effect on animal health and performance.

The aim of this study was to describe seasonal changes in scrotal circumference, sperm motility, sperm concentration, percentage of abnormal spermatozoa and biochemical and enzymatic properties of seminal plasma for 9 months in 10 mature fat-tailed Akkaraman and Awassi breed rams. Scrotal circumference and semen were evaluated monthly from rams and seminal plasma separated from semen to study it. Scrotal circumference, sperm motility and sperm concentration were higher during autumn months. Furthermore, autumn months showed moderate percentage of abnormal spermatozoa. The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence and the enumeration of Clostridium perfringens in ground poultry and burgers using the MPN technique and selected biochemical tests, including acid phosphatase and reverse-CAMP tests. Forty raw frozen ground poultry and 40 frozen poultry burger samples were purchased from different poultry processing plants in Turkey, between June and December 2000. The objectives of this study were to identify staphylococci isolated from different animal clinical samples, to examine some of the virulence factors in the isolates, to determine relationships between these virulence factors and coagulase positive Staphylococcus (CoPS)/coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) strains. A total of 180 strains of Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from bovine mastitis, dogs with otitis externa and chickens with various infections. The isolates were identified as S. aureus (29.4%), S. hyicus (16.7%), S. intermedius (3.9%), S. chromogenes (16.1%), S. lentus (13.3%), S. epidermidis (11.1%), S. simulans (7.8%) and S. haemolyticus (1.7%). This study evaluated 30 lambs, 20 naturally infected with coccidia oocysts (infected group) and 10 healthy lambs (control group). Blood samples were collected from both groups for evaluation of ascorbic acid values in plasma and blood cells analysis. Mean plasma ascorbic acid values in the infected group were lower than those in the control group (0.76 ± 0.19 and 2.00 ± 0.58 mg/dl, respectively). A decrease in erythrocyte, haemoglobin and haematocrit values and an increase in leukocyte values were determined.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hatching month on the hatching features of Bronze turkeys, and to determine the suitable months for hatching. For this purpose, the hatching records of Bronze turkeys raised in the Bingöl Beekeeping and Turkey Production Station from 1998 to 2003 were used. Leteux-Meyer mixture (LMM) contains formalin and malachite green and can be externally applied to fish as an antimicrobial agent. To determine the effects of prophylactic treatment with LMM on plasma lysozyme levels and the secondary stress indices, alterations in plasma glucose, chloride, sodium, potassium and hematocrit were monitored in healthy rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss W. Two corn hybrids (conventional: CON; silage: SIL) were harvested at early dent (ED), 1/2 milkline (1/2 ML), and black layer (BL) stages of maturity for testing the effects of hybrid, stage of maturity, and length of fermentation on corn silage quality. Tested parameters were pH, DM, CP, and ruminal in situ DM disappearance (ISDMD), respectively. Longer fermentation length caused lower silage pH at 8 (3.97) and 16 (3.93) weeks. While CP content tended to increase with longer fermentation length, it tended to decrease with increasing maturity stage (ED: 8.0%; BL: 7.2%). In situ DM disappearance was 4% higher for the …

MIC_{50} and MIC_{90} values of ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole, tetracycline and erythromycin for 39 fish pathogenic bacterial strains (Yersinia ruckeri, Enterococcus seriolicida, and Aeromonas salmonicida) were determined using the E-test and agar dilution method. The MIC_{50} value of ciprofloxacin was approximately 1 mg/l for all fish pathogenic isolates. All fish pathogenic isolates showed elevated susceptibility to ciprofloxacin.

The aim of this work was to find possible differences between the effects of anticholinergic drug administration during the duodenal phase 1 or phase 2a of migrating myoelectric complex on antral spike burst amplitude in fasted and non-fasted sheep. Eight adult rams possessing bipolar electrodes in the antrum and small intestine were used in the study. Feeding increased significantly the spike burst amplitude range from 60-110 to 80-160 µV. The prevalence of BHV-1 and BLV antibodies was studied in 313 serum samples collected from 5 dairy cattle herds. Serum samples were collected from both apparently healthy animals and animals with respiratory symptoms. The samples were tested for the presence of antibodies against BHV-1 and BLV using virus neutralization and agar gel immunodiffusion test, respectively. The results indicated that the prevalence of BHV-1 and BLV infections was 19.5% and 0.3%, respectively.

The detection of Listeria monocytogenes in Helix pomatia, both raw and cooked is presented here. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a rapid procedure with both sensitivity and specificity for quick detection and identification of Listeria monocytogenes from raw and cooked Helix pomatia. A total of 30 bags (10 g each) of H. pomatia samples were investigated for the Listeria monocytogenes inlB gene with the PCR method. PCR amplification products demonstrated that 18 of the 30 samples showed positive reactions to Listeria monocytogenes in the PCR. All PCR positive samples showed specific amplification of the 343 bp fragment for Listeria monocytogenes.

A bacteriological and parasitological study of the white sea bream, Diplodus sargus L., was conducted as this species is a potential candidate for aquaculture in Mediterranean countries. The study comprised fish reared in commercial cages (2 farms) located in different geographical localities, as well as fish reared experimentally in cages located in a natural enclosed lagoon. Fish were examined in the fresh state by means of smears from all internal and external organs and by histology. Microbiology was also performed at all sites. The effect of different levels of illumination in the early life development stage of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo) larvae was examined. It was determined that illumination affected the relationships between total length and digestive tube length, total length and oil globule volume, and total length and yolk sac volume. The difference in the development of total length of the larvae kept in the dark and in other lighting conditions (30-450 lx) was significant (P < 0.05); however, it was determined that digestive tube development, yolk sac utilisation, and oil globule absorption differences of the larvae were not significant (P > 0.05). This study was performed to investigate the microbiological and chemical characteristics of Kashar cheese produced from raw milk according to traditional techniques. The counts of total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on MRS and M17 agar, psychrotroph organisms, yeast and molds, coliforms and the presence of Escherichia coli were determined during the manufacturing stages and ripening. Five different dose groups were formed to evaluate the efficacy of emamectin benzoate as a treatment for Lernanthropus kroyeri (van Beneden, 1851) infestation in cultured sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.). Emamectin benzoate was administered in-feed at doses of 0 (control), 10, 25, 50, and 100 µg kg^{-1} biomass day-1 for 7 consecutive days. Parasites were counted on days 7, 14, and 21, and comparisons were made to untreated control fish. Seawater temperature was 16-16.5 °C.
