Influencing Food Choice: Effects Of Stress And Sleep Deprivation On Dietary Habits Of Young Adults, Amy L. Leiferman
Influencing Food Choice: Effects Of Stress And Sleep Deprivation On Dietary Habits Of Young Adults, Amy L. Leiferman
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction: Lifelong dietary habits are shaped during young adulthood; hence, preventing poor food choice practices during this period is vital. Stress and sleep deprivation are two important lifestyle elements that affect eating habits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate stress and sleep deprivation as factors contributing to poor dietary choices of college-aged students. Methodology: During finals week, a survey inquiring about sleep duration, perceived stress, and dietary patterns throughout the semester (typical week vs. finals week), was administered to university students (n=83). Fifty-five participants (21 male) provided an ID number, which allowed university-collected demographic and food-purchasing …

Four-Digit Hand: Anatomy Of Ray Ii Amputation, Sadie Volk
Four-Digit Hand: Anatomy Of Ray Ii Amputation, Sadie Volk
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
The South Dakota State University anatomy program received a male cadaver, age eighty-four, in January 2014. Upon arrival, the cadaver was observed for any signs of surgery, skin ulcerations, or abnormality. The inspection revealed that his right hand only had four digits. In order to observe such a unique extremity, a dissection was conducted to understand the anatomy of the four-digit hand. This dissection would search for standard anatomical landmarks as well as abnormalities that could have been in relation to the absent finger. In this case study, both amputation and a possible birth defect were taken into account and …

Testing The Delivery Of An Interactive Second Grade Nutrition Education Curriculum, Kaitlyn Hemmingson
Testing The Delivery Of An Interactive Second Grade Nutrition Education Curriculum, Kaitlyn Hemmingson
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Childhood obesity rates in the United States are alarming. Interventions incorporating nutrition education and physical activity are important for initiating behavior changes that may reduce the risk of childhood obesity and future health complications. The availability of nutrition curriculum for use in a second grade audience is limited. For this project, a nutrition education curriculum for second grade students was developed and tested over a two-week period in the fall of 2013. Six second grade classrooms (N=118) received four 20-minute interactive nutrition lessons. Lesson topics included: My Plate, Handy Portions, Sugar Shockers, and MyTray. Pre and post assessments of nutrition …
Effect Of 2-Deoxyglucose On Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines, Alex Olinger, Pratik Muley, Hemachand Tummala
Effect Of 2-Deoxyglucose On Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines, Alex Olinger, Pratik Muley, Hemachand Tummala
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
The third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. is colon cancer. The major disadvantage of cancer chemotherapy is its non-selective toxicity to healthy cells at the therapeutic doses. A possible target selective for cancer cells is their dependence on glycolysis for cellular energy. 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) is a glycolytic inhibitor that has been shown to be safe in both animals and humans. The molecular mechanisms for the anticancer effect of 2-DG cannot be explained solely by its glycolytic inhibition. In this manuscript we studied the effect of 2-DG on colon cancer cells and its possible molecular mechanism. Colon cancer …
Translation Of Vibration From A Vibrational Plate To The Human Body, Lars Mattison
Translation Of Vibration From A Vibrational Plate To The Human Body, Lars Mattison
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study was done to validate the results of our previous study [1] as well as analyze how the Soloflex Whole Body Vibration Platform translates vibration to the human body. The purpose of causing vibration within the human body is to increase bone density, possibly by activating osteoblasts within the bone. When the body is subjected to stress, it adapts as quickly as possible to counteract this stress. There is evidence that vibration caused by low magnitude mechanical signals (LMMS) increases bone in children with disabling conditions [2] and young women (15-20 years) with low bone mineral density [3]. Our …

Comparison Of Three Physical Activity Measurement Tools To Assess Physical Activity Guideline Compliance In Children, Emily C. Huber, Andrew M. Litz
Comparison Of Three Physical Activity Measurement Tools To Assess Physical Activity Guideline Compliance In Children, Emily C. Huber, Andrew M. Litz
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Current physical activity recommendations suggest that children should have 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of three different physical activity measurement tools to assess whether children were meeting physical activity recommendations. Methods: Physical activity was assessed for one week via accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X), pedometer (New Lifestyles NL-1000), and for one day using a self report questionnaire (Self-Administered Physical Activity Checklist, or [SAPAC]) in thirty 5th-grade students. A total of 15 students, (11 ± 1 yrs; 11 female, 4 male) met compliance standards and were used for …
Affect Comprehension In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Visual Field Isolation Intervention, Erica L. Schmidt
Affect Comprehension In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Visual Field Isolation Intervention, Erica L. Schmidt
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) tend to show under-activation of the right fusiform face area of the ventral temporal cortex when viewing emotional faces, which may explain their affect comprehension deficits. This left hemisphere dominance, indicative of a piecemeal processing strategy, has been shown a less effective method of understanding true emotion. The present study aimed to condition the left-visual-field-to right-FFA pathway by allowing children with ASD to work through an emotion-matching computer program. One group completed the experiment with both eyes uncovered, while the other worked with only their left visual field open. Though no significant differences …

Assessment Of Biosecurity Procedures To Prevent Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Cross Contamination, Rebecca Aden
Assessment Of Biosecurity Procedures To Prevent Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Cross Contamination, Rebecca Aden
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a common virus among cattle, and there are many different strains of the virus. BVDV can cause mucosal disease in infected cattle. There are lab strains of BVDV used for testing, but there are also wild-type viruses that may develop within a herd or population. These wild-type strains can be dangerous due to cross contamination between herds. This project compares serum samples from two different herds on the basis of the antibody response to a wild-type virus isolated from a persistent infected animal in one of the herds. We tested for a possible cross …

The Journal of Undergraduate Research
West Nile Virus is currently affecting human and animal life in North America. This Virus has been a popular topic among researchers, health professionals, and state health departments because of its rapid emergence as a threat to human and animal populations. In this article, I will be discussing the symptomology associated with West Nile Virus and the disease's pattern of transmission. Furthermore, I will describe procedures for diagnosing and treating West Nile Virus and minimizing its future spread into human populations. I will conclude this article by predicting how the West Nile Virus will impact South Dakotans in 2004.
Toxicity Potential Of Aqueous Kava Extracts On Liver Function Tests In Rats, Ashwini K. Devkota
Toxicity Potential Of Aqueous Kava Extracts On Liver Function Tests In Rats, Ashwini K. Devkota
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Kava, prepared as the traditional aqueous infusion, was tested in the rat for possible effects on liver function tests. Extracts were administered in dosages containing 200 or 500 mg of the active kavalactones per kg for two or four weeks. Sera were assayed for four enzymes that are markers of liver toxicity and liver homogenates for malondiadehyde formation that indicates changes in lipid peroxidation. The data showed that none of the enzymes, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase, nor malondialdehyde levels were elevated, in fact in some cases they were significantly reduced, suggesting the lack of a …
