Exploring Practices Of Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialst Physical Therapists In Addressing Needs Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Olga Chaikovsky Mar 2024

Exploring Practices Of Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialst Physical Therapists In Addressing Needs Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Olga Chaikovsky

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition affecting multiple domains of development. Physical Therapists (PTs) are members of the interprofessional team addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. A lack of uniformity in evidence-based assessments and practices employed by therapists to address the needs of children with ASD exists in the literature. PTs often implement approaches that are not evidence-based but rather learned from more experienced professionals or discovered by trial and error.

Pediatric clinical specialist physical therapists (PCSPTs) are PTs who possess advanced education and clinical skills in Pediatrics. As pediatric experts, PCSPTs play a major …

Improving Patients' Perception Of Pain: An Evaluation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Chronic Pain Coaching Group, Suzanne A. Levy May 2023

Improving Patients' Perception Of Pain: An Evaluation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Chronic Pain Coaching Group, Suzanne A. Levy

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: The opioid crisis in the United States warrants an improved standard of practice for managing chronic pain. A large body of evidence highlights a positive correlation between health coaching focused on mindfulness-based interventions and its potential to improve the overall well-being of chronic pain patients. Currently, there are limited resources to address these patients' psychosocial needs, and the primary treatment plan consists of pharmacological management using long-term opioids. Project Aim: The 3M Chronic Pain Coaching Model is a 6-week coaching group focused on mindfulness, meditation, and motivation. This quality improvement project aimed to evaluate how a mindfulness-based chronic pain …

Exploring Balance Assessment Practices And Utilization Of Academy Of Geriatric Physical Therapy Clinical Guidance Statement In Fall Management By U.S.-Practicing Physical Therapists: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Franceah Palencia-Quijano May 2023

Exploring Balance Assessment Practices And Utilization Of Academy Of Geriatric Physical Therapy Clinical Guidance Statement In Fall Management By U.S.-Practicing Physical Therapists: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Franceah Palencia-Quijano

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Falls and balance impairments in older adults are major public health concerns. Physical therapists (PTs) play a major role in preventing and managing falls in the U.S. healthcare system. PTs are doctoral healthcare professionals who evaluate and treat balance impairments that impact prevalence of falls. As autonomous practitioners, PTs should incorporate evidence-based tools in balance assessment and management of falls. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) recommends PTs utilize evidence-based tools such as the (a) Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy (AGPT) Clinical Guidance Statement (CGS) in Community-Dwelling Older Adults (CDOA and (b) the APTA balance tests and measures in …

Interprofessional Education Towards Interprofessional Practice: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Respiratory Care Students And Therapists’ Perceptions, Ziyad Al Nufaiei Mar 2021

Interprofessional Education Towards Interprofessional Practice: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Respiratory Care Students And Therapists’ Perceptions, Ziyad Al Nufaiei

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Context: Respiratory care (RC) is a health-care discipline that specializes in providing

treatment for patients with acute and chronic cardiopulmonary abnormalities. The actual practice of respiratory care has changed dramatically since its inception. Today, RCs possess a strong skill base and an expansive depth of knowledge, which enables them to provide safe,team-based, evidence-based effective care for patients. The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) has recently required that RC programs nationwide include interprofessional education (IPE) as an accreditation standard to encourage the goal of promoting interprofessional practice (IPP).

Objective: To explore perceptions of RC students, faculty, and practicing professionals …

Implementing The Hodgson Red Yellow Green Mobilization Consensus Recommendation In A Medical And Surgical Icu: A Retrospective Study Exploring The Effectiveness Of An Early Mobilization Decision Protocol In Icu, Swati Patel May 2020

Implementing The Hodgson Red Yellow Green Mobilization Consensus Recommendation In A Medical And Surgical Icu: A Retrospective Study Exploring The Effectiveness Of An Early Mobilization Decision Protocol In Icu, Swati Patel

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: More than 4 million people are admitted annually to intensive care units (ICUs). Due to immobility, many ICU survivors experience significant cognitive, psychological, and physically disabling side effects regardless of admitting diagnosis. Multiple studies and quality improvement projects have shown the safety, feasibility, and benefits of early mobilization in the ICU setting. Hodgson et al (2014) published consensus recommendations for safe active mobilization of mechanically ventilated critically ill adults. To date, there is no standardized and simple triage protocol for identifying patients for early mobilization. No study so far has described operationalizing and implementing the Red-Yellow-Green system described …

The Effectiveness Of Nurse-Driven Early Mobility Protocol, Viktoriya Fridman Dec 2017

The Effectiveness Of Nurse-Driven Early Mobility Protocol, Viktoriya Fridman

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this quality initiative is to introduce the nurse driven evidence-based practice change related to patient mobility in the hospital setting with the aim to improve nurse knowledge, attitude, and behavior on a medical-surgical unit.

Significance of Project: The proposed DNP quality project is devised from the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Choosing Wisely campaign unique to the elements of “don’t let older adults lay in bed or only get up to a chair during their hospital stay” to achieve a practice change. A significant aspect of patient care in a hospital setting is patient …

Effects Of Direction Time Constraints And Walking Speed On Turn Strategies And Gait Adaptations In Healthy Older And Young Adults, Dennis Torre Dec 2017

Effects Of Direction Time Constraints And Walking Speed On Turn Strategies And Gait Adaptations In Healthy Older And Young Adults, Dennis Torre

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Hip fractures can be life-threatening, debilitating, and costly. The odds for hip fracture increases from impact of sideways falls. While turning has been strongly associated with hip fracture & sideways falls, the distinction between the risks for walking-turns as opposed to low-velocity in-place turning is not clear. The present study sought to fill a gap as previous research had not compared walking-turn performance in young & healthy older adults at low-fall risk within the same study and response-conditions of speed interacting with direction-cue time constraints. Spatial-temporal variables representative of AP braking/propulsion (i.e. stride-length & speed) & ML stability (left/right H-H …

The Intra-Rater Reliability Of The Clavicular Jump Test (Cjt), Thomas Koc Jun 2017

The Intra-Rater Reliability Of The Clavicular Jump Test (Cjt), Thomas Koc

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in today’s society. Approximately 50% of patients with shoulder pain seek medical attention, which includes physical therapy. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the shoulder, including its fascial attachments, its biomechanics, and functional relationship to nearby spinal regions is crucial for successful rehabilitation diagnostics and treatment interventions. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the intra-rater reliability of the Clavicular Jump Test (CJT). Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest (repeated measures), and correlation design. A total of 96 subjects (47 males and 49 females) volunteered …

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole Dec 2014

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

While several studies have reported a decrement in performance by older adults while walking and concurrently performing a dual task on even surfaces, to date the effects of dual tasking while walking on uneven surfaces commonly found in the community has received less attention. Thus, we sought to test the hypothesis that an incremental decrement in gait parameters will be observed, when walking on an uneven versus an even surface and furthermore, that this decrement would be dependent upon the concurrent performance of a secondary cognitive and/or motor task in functionally independent-living-community older adults.

Dynamic Gait Index assessed the subject’s …
