Aortic Stenosis Poster.Pptx, Katonya Lawson Jul 2019

Aortic Stenosis Poster.Pptx, Katonya Lawson

Katonya Lawson

Aortic stenosis is the narrowing of the aortic valve secondary to calcification and fibrosis. It is the most common valve disorder and the second most frequent reason for cardiac surgery. As the elderly population increases, the number of patients presenting with aortic stenosis will increase. RNs and APRNs need to be aware of the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of aortic stenosis because the disease can progress quickly and be fatal if mismanaged. Patients with aortic stenosis have an increased risk of morbidity and mortality during the peri-operative period during non-cardiac surgery. Therefore, CRNAs must remain vigilant when caring for this …

The Influence Of Human Support On The Effectiveness Of A Web And Mobile App-Based Multimodal Lifestyle Intervention Targeting Mental Health: A Randomised Comparative Study, Mel Renfrew, Darren Morton, Jason K. Morton, Jason Hinze, Peter Beamish, Geraldine Przybylko Jul 2019

The Influence Of Human Support On The Effectiveness Of A Web And Mobile App-Based Multimodal Lifestyle Intervention Targeting Mental Health: A Randomised Comparative Study, Mel Renfrew, Darren Morton, Jason K. Morton, Jason Hinze, Peter Beamish, Geraldine Przybylko

Darren Morton

Introduction: There is a need for efficacious lifestyle interventions that promote the mental health and emotional wellness of both healthy and clinical cohorts. Evidence regarding the usefulness of adding human support (i.e. guidance) to improve the outcomes of web- and mobile app-based psychological interventions for clinical populations is mixed,1-3 however little is known about healthy cohorts.

Methods: 458 self-selected participants registered to join a 10-week, web- and mobile app-based, multimodal lifestyle intervention. The participants were randomised into three groups, differentiated by support mode: standard, who received automated emails only (S); standard plus personalised SMS messages (S+pSMS); standard plus online …

Openness To A Paradigm Shift In Medical Education Assessment – A Case Study, Elina Tor

Elina Tor

Background – In 2017 the School of Medicine Fremantle (SoMF) began moving towards a paradigm shift to optimise the learning and decision functions of assessments.
Methods – Consistent with best practice of first doing, then watching and thinking, a multi-year (2017 – 2020) action research project has been in place alongside the staged roll-out of programmatic assessment for learning (PA) framework in the SoMF since 2017. The aim of the action research is to authentically construct theories of action to account for ongoing reflection on experience.  The focus of this presentation is to use the SoMF context to further understanding …

The current electronic personal health record (PHR) has low patient adoption [1]. Increasing use and adoption of the PHR will improve patient-centered care. Users often have difficulty remembering passwords or share them, giving multiple people access to one account.

Utilizing biometrics for authentication is becoming more common in our daily lives – think of the fingerprint sensor on a smartphone or retina scanners at high security corporations. The quickly evolving technology that runs our lives calls for incorporating biometric authentication into more systems. Using biometric authentication can ensure that passwords would not need to be remembered and that only the …

Histones are an important aspect in human cells because they play a role in gene regulation. Histones package DNA into structural units, where DNA wraps around the histones form nucleosomes. Histone acetylation is important in human cells because these modifications open up chromatin to allow for gene expression. Bromodomains are protein domains that can recognize and bind to histone acetylation. Bromodomains play a significant role in gene transcription and the regulation of chromatin. BRD3 is a gene that contains two bromodomains and recognizes/binds to acetylated chromatin. BRD3 is mutated in some cancers, though many bromodomain mutations have not been investigated. …

Clostridium difficile infects and kills 30,000-40,000 people a year in the United States. In order to target and minimize the spread of C. difficile we are screening puupehenone, a natural marine product that is excreted from some species of sponges and coral as a defense mechanism, and repurposing its role for medical use. Our research primarily focuses on determining puupehenone’s antimicrobial properties. This was determined by testing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of puupehenone as it relates to a single strain of C. difficile, and then observing whether the antimicrobial properties hold across multiple strains of the bacterium. The strain …

Online Collaborative Learning To Enhance Clinical Training For 3rd Year Medical Students In Pediatrics, Erik E. Langenau, Louise Jones, Paula M. Gregory, Robert Lee May 2016

Online Collaborative Learning To Enhance Clinical Training For 3rd Year Medical Students In Pediatrics, Erik E. Langenau, Louise Jones, Paula M. Gregory, Robert Lee

Erik E. Langenau

Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) provides great opportunity to engage leaners at remote clinical training sites.  Through OCL, learners participate in a variety of eLearning activities such as online content review, discussion boards, interactive blogs, wikis, webconferencing, self-reflection and group activities.   OCL affords the opportunity to reach students at different clinical training sites, ensure a basic level of comparable learning experiences, and augment face-to-face clinical training experiences.
We describe a 3rd year clinical rotation in pediatrics facilitated partially online:  blended learning.  The program combines online collaborative learning with asynchronous discussion boards and blogs, podcasts, video demonstrations, didactic presentations, scenario-based instruction, …

Nursing faculty are sometimes challenged when leading students to successful completion of nursing exams including the NCLEX. It is essential that faculty identify specific learning barriers for students who are challenged with nursing exams. Nursing faculty have reported various methods of remediation to enhance students’ readiness for taking nursing exams in preparation for the NCLEX. Although test review sessions, guided imagery, and assessments of learning styles are common strategies reported by faculty to provide remediation for students who are preparing for nursing exams, the literature reveals minimal evidence to support these strategies. Nursing faculty at IPFW have expanded on common …

Does Flexibility Correlate With Crunch Factor In Golf And Produce Faster Clubhead Speed?, Christopher Joyce Oct 2015

Does Flexibility Correlate With Crunch Factor In Golf And Produce Faster Clubhead Speed?, Christopher Joyce

Christopher Joyce

Introduction: Crunch factor (CF) in golf is the product of lateral bending of the trailing side and axial rotation velocity. CF is maximised at ball impact (BI) and is thought to increase force behind the ball and increase clubhead speed. Investigations have reported dissimilar findings on CF and low back pain although, flexibility and CF have yet to be assessed. The first aim of this study was to see if flexibility (absolute range of motion – ROM) enabled golfers to maximise CF at BI for trunk and lower trunk segments. The second aim was to see if absolute ROM variables …

Religiosidad Y Felicidad En Alumnos Universitarios: ¿Es Mejor Trabajar Con Los Ancianos?, T. L. Brink Oct 2015

Religiosidad Y Felicidad En Alumnos Universitarios: ¿Es Mejor Trabajar Con Los Ancianos?, T. L. Brink

T. L. Brink

Reports on self-estimated life satisfaction and religiosity (present and future projected) in different populations of Mexican university students. Student levels of life satisfaction were comparable to the national norms (Mitofsky) but were lower than the national norms for religiosity. Unlike in the U.S., there was no correlation between religiosity and life satisfaction. Students in a gerontology program showed higher levels of religiosity than those in another university.
