Musculoskeletal Fitness As A Predictor Of Injury During Police Academy Training: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Rob Orr, Matthew Stewart, Rodney P. Pope, Michael Stierli, Ben Hinton

Rob Marc Orr

Introduction:

• Tactical training institutions (like those for military, law enforcement and firefighting) often implement intensive training regimes to adequately prepare their candidates (Bullock et al. 2010)

• Recruit training physical fitness assessment items are performed to determine baseline fitness of each recruit

• Previous research has investigated fitness measures as a positive injury predictor among tactical recruits during basic training (Bedno et al., 2013; Knapik et al., 2001; O’connor et al., 2011; Rosendal, et al., 2003)

• However protocols generally include aerobic fitness as part of the process with predominantly military recruit populations (Lisman, et al. 2013: Knapik et …

Effect Of Therapeutic Massage On Pain In Patients With Dementia, Yamini Kapoor, Rob Orr Jul 2015

Effect Of Therapeutic Massage On Pain In Patients With Dementia, Yamini Kapoor, Rob Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Introduction

The aim was to investigate whether therapeutic massage was effective in relieving pain in elderly residents with dementia.

Methods

A randomized controlled study was conducted in an aged care facility. Ten participants with dementia or advanced dementia were allocated to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group received 10?min of massage (effleurage, kneading, and trigger point therapy) four times per week for 4 weeks. The Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia scale was used as the outcome measure.

Results

No significant changes in mean outcome measure scores were found post intervention (Intervention mean?=?5.0?±?3.49; Control mean?=?5.2?±?3.49: t(8)?=?0.09, p?=?0.93). …

Load Carriage: Reconditioning For The Return Top Work Of Tactical Athletes, Rob Marc Orr Apr 2015

Load Carriage: Reconditioning For The Return Top Work Of Tactical Athletes, Rob Marc Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Tactical athletes, like police officers, soldiers and fire-fighters, carry external loads as an occupational requirement. For police officers these loads can weigh up to 27 kg, fire fighters up to 37 kg, and soldiers over 50 kg (Knapik, et al., 2004; Orr, 2012). Furthermore these loads are often carried in extreme and unhospitable environments where threat to life is an occupational risk. Not only are these load weights increasing (Orr, 2010), but research suggests that once a load carriage injury has been sustained, the carrier is at a high risk of subsequent load carriage injuries (Orr, 2012) . Therefore, optimizing …

Gender Differences In Load Carriage Injuries Of Australian Army Soldiers, Rob Marc Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Soldiers are required to carry loads of 50+kg while performing combat tasks, often in unpredictable and hostile environments. Removal of gender restrictions in combat arms trades of military forces, combined with the changing nature of warfare, means female soldiers are more frequently exposed to heavy military load carriage. Currently female soldiers carry lighter absolute loads than male soldiers but only slightly heavier relative loads. Purpose: To determine relative risks and patterns of injuries, including serious personal injuries (SPI), associated with contemporary military load carriage in female compared to male soldiers.

The Impact Of A Structured Reconditioning Program On The Physical Attributes And Attitudes Of Injured Police Officers: A Pilot Study, Rob Orr, Michael Stierli, Matteo L. Amabile, Benjamin Wilkes Jan 2014

The Impact Of A Structured Reconditioning Program On The Physical Attributes And Attitudes Of Injured Police Officers: A Pilot Study, Rob Orr, Michael Stierli, Matteo L. Amabile, Benjamin Wilkes

Rob Marc Orr

Specific work tasks represent the most widely recognised risk for Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders and injuries. Six injured police officers (m=38.8 years of age) volunteered to participate in a study to determine whether a structured and supervised reconditioning program may improve their return to work prospects. Three officers were allocated to the intervention group, receiving eight training sessions over four-weeks of a tailored reconditioning program, and three officers to a control group. Both groups continued to receive standard medical care. Mean total Functional Movement Screen scores increased in the intervention group (+4.3 points) to a greater extent than the control group …

The 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Assessment As A Predictor Of Injury Risk In Police Recruits, Rob Orr, Michael Stierli, Ben Hinton, Michael Steele

Rob Marc Orr

Police recruits with lower intermittent metabolic fitness as measured by the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test are at a greater risk of sustaining an injury or illness during police recruit training.

Load Carriage For The Tactical Operator: Impacts And Conditioning - A Review, Rob Marc Orr Nov 2012

Load Carriage For The Tactical Operator: Impacts And Conditioning - A Review, Rob Marc Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Tactical operators are required to carry loads as part of their occupations. Carriage of these loads have been associated with causing physical injuries to the carrier and impairing their ability to perform occupational tasks. One potential means of negating these risks associated with load carriage tasks is through physically conditioning the carrier. Through use of the Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type (F.I.T.T.) formula this review explored the literature to determine the optimal conditioning stimulus to enhance the resilience of tactical operators required to perform load carriage tasks. It was determined that a conditioning stimulus of one load carriage session every …

The Royal Military College Physical Conditioning Optimisation Review: A Four Year Project To Improve Physical Health And Fitness While Reducing Injuries, Robin Orr

Rob Marc Orr

This session presents a unique insight into the Physical Conditioning Optimisation Review; a four year project to reduce musculoskeletal injuries at the Royal Military College. It will highlight the benefits and potential pitfalls of an injury surveillance program and the importance of identifying cultural and contextual factors that influence risks and risk controls. Lessons learnt and subsequent actions taken by the review will be explored and the impact of dedicated managerial support and effective leadership discussed.

Load Carriage And The Female Soldier, Rob Marc Orr, Venerina Johnston, Julia Coyle, Rodney Pope Jun 2011

Load Carriage And The Female Soldier, Rob Marc Orr, Venerina Johnston, Julia Coyle, Rodney Pope

Rob Marc Orr

This paper reviews the physiological, biomechanical and health impacts of load carriage on the female soldier and extends to include issues acknowledged as impacting on the female athlete and hence the female soldier. Physiological factors such as fat mass, strength, aerobic endurance and biomechanical factors such as stride length and forward lean have the potential to increase the energy cost of load carriage and cause injury. The female athlete triad, iron deficiency, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and military equipment issues can likewise reduce female soldier performance and increase injury risk. Research evidence is presented to inform the development and implementation …

Load Carriage And Its Force Impact, Robin Orr, Rodney Pope, Verenina Johnston, Julia Coyle Dec 2010

Load Carriage And Its Force Impact, Robin Orr, Rodney Pope, Verenina Johnston, Julia Coyle

Rob Marc Orr

Extract:
Just as history records that military personnel have been carrying heavy loads for over two millennia (Orr, 2010), so too does it show their impact on military force sustainment and combat effectiveness. Around 800BC, the heavy loads carried by Assyrian soldiers reduced their mobility and led them to experiment continually with their shields in order to lighten their loads (Gabriel, 2002). Around 400BC, the long marches of Cyrus’ ‘infamous 10,000’, an army of Greek mercenaries accompanied by Xenophon, would have resulted in numerous stress fractures, torn ligaments, muscle damage, blisters and abrasions. While some of these injuries can be …
