Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a complex cardiac condition affecting five million
patients in the United States. This condition accounts for a tremendous financial burden
nationwide of 34 billion dollars per year with 75% of the overall healthcare costs attributed to
inpatient hospitalization and high readmission rates (Bhimaraj, 2013). Presently, treatment for
CHF patients in the hospital focuses on fluid volume overload, stabilizing vital signs, managing
cardiac medications and education for self-management at home. Post discharge, efficacious
self-management is the foundation for living with CHF and hindering disease progression.
However, up to 80% of CHF patients fail to maintain lifestyle …

Aortic Stenosis Poster.Pptx, Katonya Lawson Jul 2019

Aortic Stenosis Poster.Pptx, Katonya Lawson

Katonya Lawson

Aortic stenosis is the narrowing of the aortic valve secondary to calcification and fibrosis. It is the most common valve disorder and the second most frequent reason for cardiac surgery. As the elderly population increases, the number of patients presenting with aortic stenosis will increase. RNs and APRNs need to be aware of the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of aortic stenosis because the disease can progress quickly and be fatal if mismanaged. Patients with aortic stenosis have an increased risk of morbidity and mortality during the peri-operative period during non-cardiac surgery. Therefore, CRNAs must remain vigilant when caring for this …

Sandra L. Spoelstra, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN

Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) projects are summative evaluations of enactment of the DNP Essentials. However, information about structure, process, and outcomes of DNP projects is scarce. Guided by an enhanced actualized DNP model, this study tested the effect of a PhD-DNP-site mentor model to guide DNP projects. Time-to-complete assignments, defense, and graduation improved; high satisfaction for students, mentors, and faculty were found; and a strengthened academic-practice partnership occurred, leading to additional student placements. Broader testing of the enhanced model in various size and types of academic-practice settings is needed prior to use.

A Lifestyle Intervention To Decrease Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In A Rural Population, Amanda Culp-Roche Jun 2019

A Lifestyle Intervention To Decrease Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In A Rural Population, Amanda Culp-Roche

Amanda Culp-Roche

Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at risk for developing life-threatening comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease (CVD).  As a consequence, T2DM is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and decreased quality of life, thus highlighting the importance of prevention of T2DM. Further, the prevalence of T2DM is substantially greater in rural populations compared to urban populations, making rural individuals particularly appropriate targets for T2DM prevention.
T2DM is a largely preventable disease that is associated with modifiable risk factors such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and obesity. Lifestyle interventions to improve these modifiable risk factors have been used to …

Relationship Between The Cortisol-Estradiol Phase Difference And Affect In Women, Karyn Butler Jun 2019

Relationship Between The Cortisol-Estradiol Phase Difference And Affect In Women, Karyn Butler

Karyn Butler, PhD, CNM

Affective disorders impact women’s health, with a lifetime prevalence of over twelve per cent. They have been correlated with reproductive cycle factors, under the regulation of hormonal circadian rhythms. In affective disorders, circadian rhythms may become desynchronized. The circadian rhythms of cortisol and estradiol may play a role in affective disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the temporal relationship between the rhythms of cortisol and estradiol and its relationship to affect. It was hypothesized that a cortisol-estradiol phase difference (PD) exists that correlates with optimal affect. A small scale, comparative, correlational design was used to test the …

Elders, Values, And Peppermint Candies, Sarah A. Klein, Andrea C. Bostrom

Andrea Bostrom, PhD, PMHCNS-BC

The demographics of the population of the United States are inexorably changing: The baby boomers, who have defined much of the culture of the past half century, will continue to do so over the next 50 years. Just as the population is aging, so are the members of the nursing profession. Working with elders as our patients and as our peers is a reasonable expectation. Encouraging younger nurses to embrace working with elders is a challenge. Learning about how we have come to value aging and our elders is one way to engage the change in the work that nurses …
