An Evaluation Of Adolescent Concussion Management And Guidelines By Primary Care Providers In The Outpatient Setting: Dnp Scholarly Project, Mary Beth Newkirk

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Understanding the pathology of a concussion has been a challenging task for many experts in healthcare. An agreed upon definition has yet to be developed and many health care providers are not properly educated to assess and care for those suffering from a concussion. Management of concussion in adolescents, a vulnerable population, requires even more consideration and training. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge current providers in the four-state region regarding sport-related concussion management in the adolescent population, to improve patient care and outcomes, and to improve knowledge learned through exposure to a clinical practice guideline-based, …

Ultrasound Guided Intravenous Access In The Emergency Department, Lynieta Leisure

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

One-quarter of all emergency department visits in the United States results in peripheral intravenous line (PIV) placement for parenteral fluid administration (Fields, Piela, Au and Ku, 2014). When PIV access is delayed, critical care measures are also delayed. Meyer et al. (2014), reports the first attempt PIV access failure rate is approximately 25%. In the critically ill patient, timely PIV access may be the difference between survival and death. Difficult venous access is present in approximately one in ten ED patients requiring PIV access (Fields et al., 2014). The purpose of this scholarly project is to implement a quality improvement …

A Study On Ecological Distribution Of And Selected Gene Expression In Amblyomma Americanum: An Insight Into The Alpha-Galactose Allergy Caused By Tick Bites, Leah Cuthill

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Ticks transmit a wide variety of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminthes to vertebrates. Their life cycle depends on blood meals from various hosts as well as on environmental conditions such as the temperature and habitat type. A newly recognized allergic disease has been identified and is characterized by a delayed reaction following the consumption of some mammalian meats. The allergy often results in life threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis, hives, and breathing problems 3-6 hours after the consumption of mammalian meat. Not everyone develops the allergy when they are bitten by a lone star tick, and the cause …

Sepsis Screening Education, Brittany R. Horn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Sepsis is a significant burden to the healthcare field with 1.7 million Americans annually diagnosed with this condition. Earlier diagnosis and treatment are the most effective ways of reducing morbidity and mortality related to sepsis. The current sepsis screening tool in place at Stormont-Vail Hospital, in Topeka, Kansas, is the systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) criteria; however, this screening tool has proven to be less effective than other screening tools available. The screening tools proven more effective than the SIRS criteria, are the quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) and the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA). For this project, nursing staff …

Evaluation Of Intravenous Catheter Insertion Skills And Confidence Levels Of Nurses In The Acute Care Setting, Kelly Mishmash

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The use of IVs for medication administration is an essential component in healthcare and benefits the patients (Castro-Sanchez, Charani, Drumright, Sevdalis, Shah, & Holmes, 2014). Obtaining intravenous access is a specialized nursing skill that requires a combination of clinical knowledge and psychomotor coordination (Ramer, Hunt, Ortega, Knowlton, Briggs, & Hirokawa, 2016). Difficulties created by vein size, obesity, and tortuosity can make even a skilled staff member struggle which then can lead to delays in treatment (Idemoto, Rowbottom, Reynolds, & Hickman, 2014). A single phase survey was conducted in a rural southwest Missouri hospital in order to assess confidence levels in …

Using Provider Education About Self Care To Reduce Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses, Priscella Caron

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Many have scrolled through Facebook and news stories highlighting nurses as “heroes” of the current coronavirus pandemic. Pictures of nurses in personal protective equipment while at work or clips of nurses making fun tiktok video’s celebrating recovered COVID -19 patients. Social media does not capture the sheer emotional, physical, and spiritual wear that nurses experience providing compassionate care to patients facing light threatening illness or events. Health care organizations are under pressure to control cost, increase productivity, and increase patient satisfaction scores, all while facing a pandemic crisis. This type of pressure can create inadequate staffing and increase clinical responsibilities …

Antibiotics save lives and are one of the most widely used medications of modern medicine. However, the widespread use of antibiotics has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a major public health crisis with disastrous consequences on national and global healthcare systems. AMR is associated with increased healthcare costs, increased morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, increased readmission rates, and overall poorer patient outcomes. The use of antibiotics is the single most important leading factor involved in the development of resistance. Current estimates suggest that at least 30% and up to 50% of all antibiotics prescribed …
