Continued increase in prevalence of type 2 diabetes indicates need for more effective interventions to support lifestyle and behavior changes (ADA 2018).
• Evidence indicates attending diabetes self management education programs can improve diabetes outcomes, unfortunately they are often under referred and underutilized (Powers et al. 2015, Boakye et al. 2018).
• Limited class times, locations, and capacities can make attendance for all patients difficult and vulnerable populations are less likely to participate (Boakye et al. 2018).

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased utilization of educational technology for surgical education. Our aim was to determine attitudes and behaviors of surgical education champions towards virtual educational platforms and learner engagement.
METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed to all Association of Surgical Education members addressing i) methods of engagement in virtual learning ii) ways to improve engagement and iii) what influences engagement. Stratified analysis was used to evaluate differences in responses by age, gender, level of training and specialty.
RESULTS: 154 ASE members completed the survey (13% response rate). 88% respondents accessed virtual learning events at home. Most (87%) …

Mentorship in surgery is a perennial topic of interest, as successful mentoring relationships are associated with improved career satisfaction, academic promotion, research productivity, and overall well-being. While it is true that certain minority groups in surgery find great personal and professional benefit in receiving and providing mentorship among “their own” (ie, a female academic surgeon mentoring a female resident), it is important to recognize that many mentoring relationships, whether intentionally or otherwise, extend across gender, sexuality, generations, race, ethnicity, and other differences. Lived examples of these include an Asian man hailing from the Northeast with no children mentoring a White …

Mass Casualty Mini Drills On Trauma Surgery Department Staff Knowledge: An Educational Improvement Study., Lisa Hollister, Thein Zhu, Nancy Edwards, Becky Good, Sarah Hoeppner
Emergency Medicine and Trauma
BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, the United States has witnessed an increase in mass casualty incidents (MCIs). The outcome of an MCI depends upon hospital preparedness, yet many hospitals are unfamiliar with their facility MCI procedure. Educational training drills may be one method to improve staff knowledge of policy and procedure.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to improve knowledge gained through educational MCI mini drills of institutional mass casualty policy and procedure in surgery department staff at a level II trauma center.
METHODS: A pre-/posttest design was utilized. The hospital implemented MCI mini training drills as a quality improvement project using …

Knowledge Among Patients With Heart Failure: A Narrative Synthesis Of Qualitative Research, Carly Daley, Monirah Al-Abdulmunem, Richard J. Holden
Health Services and Informatics Research
Background: Patients’ knowledge of heart failure (HF) is integral to improved outcomes. However, the HF literature has not adequately explored the nature of patients’ knowledge of HF as part of their lived experience.
Objectives: We aimed to characterize the nature of patients’ knowledge of HF, in the context of living with the disease.
Methods: We conducted a narrative synthesis of qualitative studies that addressed patients’ knowledge of HF. Studies were systematically searched and retrieved from MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES databases. Findings were synthesized using an iterative coding process carried out by multiple analysts and reported following Enhancing Transparency in …
