The TMEM165 gene encodes for a multiple pass membrane protein localized in the Golgi that has been linked to congenital disorders of glycosylation. The TMEM165 protein is a putative ion transporter that regulates H+/Ca++/Mn++ homeostasis and pH in the Golgi. Previously, we identified TMEM165 as a potential biomarker for breast carcinoma in a glycoproteomic study using late stage invasive ductal carcinoma tissues with patient-matched adjacent normal tissues. The TMEM165 protein was not detected in non-malignant matched breast tissues and was detected in invasive ductal breast carcinoma tissues by mass spectrometry. The bacteriophage population is vast, dynamic, old, and genetically diverse. The genomics of phages that infect bacterial hosts in the phylum Actinobacteria show them to not only be diverse but also pervasively mosaic, and replete with genes of unknown function. To further explore this broad group of bacteriophages, we describe here the isolation and genomic characterization of 116 phages that infect Microbacterium spp. Most of the phages are lytic, and can be grouped into twelve clusters according to their overall relatedness; seven of the phages are singletons with no close relatives. Sixteen percent of the U.S. population is over 65 years of age and up to one out of two have malnutrition. The nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) is an integral part of the nutrition care process and model consisting of consecutive steps: nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and monitoring/evaluation. The NFPE is a component of nutrition assessment providing registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) with information to determine nutrition status and degree of malnutrition. Six clinical characteristics used to identify malnutrition are energy intake, weight loss, subcutaneous fat loss, muscle loss, fluid accumulation, and reduced function status. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally 340 million school-aged children are obese. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that 13.7 million (19%) of U.S. children and adolescents age 2-19 years are obese. Obesity rates are 14% in 2- to 5-year-olds, 18% in 6- to 11-year-olds, and 21% in 12- to 19-year-olds. Hispanic children (26%) and non-Hispanic black children (22%) have higher obesity prevalence than non-Hispanic white children (14%). Non-Hispanic Asian children (11%) have lower obesity rates than non-Hispanic black children and Hispanic children. In Arkansas, 22% of school-aged children are obese and 39% are overweight …

According to recent studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in every 700 babies born is diagnosed with Down syndrome, resulting in almost 6,000 babies diagnosed in the U.S. every year. Down syndrome, also referred to as DS, comes with some physical and mental differences. Because of these differences, individuals with Down syndrome and their families face many challenges when communicating, and these challenges affect all aspects of life. A knee injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common injury among athletes, despite growing knowledge of common injury mechanisms. The athletes with the highest risk of injuring their ACLs are those playing sports that require extreme cutting or pivoting with a sudden change in speed. ACL injuries are most commonly caused by a non-contact process, usually in conjunction with a sudden change of direction or speed. Females are 4-6 times more likely than males to injure their ACL. My thesis project shares my personal experiences of a Summer 2019 medical mission trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. An Honors travel grant allowed me to walk the dirt roads and streets to learn the fascinating history of these people, to visit their shrines and churches to better understand their religious beliefs, and to travel mountainous, hand paved roads to a remote village that welcomed me with coffee sweetened with cane sugar and fresh bread baked in outdoor ovens. The groundwork has been laid for future Natural Sciences students to serve through an annual medical mission trip to Oaxaca.

Ketosis is a state in which ketone bodies are hepatically produced, which can lead to weight loss, appetite suppression, and improved glycaemic control. Reaching a state of ketosis can be difficult to attain and can be induced by fasting or restricting dietary carbohydrates. Exogenous ketones in the form of ketone monoesters have been shown to efficiently induce a state of ketosis. Ketone monoesters are synthetic molecules. Countless research articles support the connection between literacy and language development. This project explores the knowledge parents have about this connection. The paper first summarizes key findings and provides background information about the relationship between literacy and language development. Then, it discusses the results of a survey performed by the researcher. The first section of the survey collected demographic information and the second section contained 16 statements about the relationship between literacy and language development. Survey participants indicated the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with each statement, based on their previous knowledge.

Renal transplantation is the preferred method of treatment for end stage kidney disease. The majority of donor kidneys come from deceased donors and have to be stored in cold storage solution (CS) until the recipient is identified. However, prolonged CS is associated with poor long-term outcome. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of CS-related damage are largely unknown. Our laboratory recently reported that the proteasome and renal function were significantly decreased in rat kidney transplants that involved CS combined with transplantation (CS/Tx), as opposed to those that did not undergo CS (auto-transplantation/ATx).
