Treating Breast Cancer With Light: The Creation Of Two Photodynamic Therapy Agents, Victoria Lackey
Treating Breast Cancer With Light: The Creation Of Two Photodynamic Therapy Agents, Victoria Lackey
Honors Theses
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment for a wide display of diseases, including cancer, that has become gradually widespread. The procedure requires the usage of photosynthesizing agents, which are activated in the presence of light. One quite successful photodynamic therapy agent is an aromatic structure made up of four pyrrole rings called a porphyrin. This research focused on producing the water-soluble porphyrins, H2TPP-3-PEG-OH and H2TPP-PiperMe-OH, through the attachment of the starting porphyrin, H2TPPC, with 3-polyethyleneglycol and 3-piperidinemethanol, respectively. The novel, water-soluble agent was purified and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and UV-vis spectroscopy. Purity was …
Synthesis And Relaxivity Of A Target-Specific Mri Contrast Agent, Callie Clement
Synthesis And Relaxivity Of A Target-Specific Mri Contrast Agent, Callie Clement
Honors Theses
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medically important test that provides a painless, noninvasive way to visualize images of the body by using a strong magnetic field. The machine quickly changes the direction of the magnetic field in certain increments and measures the time it takes for protons to change their direction, lining up with the magnetic field again. The time taken for the protons to realign is called the overall relaxivity rate (R1). Abnormalities, especially tumors, are expressed in MRI images because their relaxivity rates are quite different from the relaxivity rates of normal tissues.
To help enhance MRI …
An Assessment Of The Effects Of Medical Marijuana On The Quality Of Patient Life, Kori L. Bullard
An Assessment Of The Effects Of Medical Marijuana On The Quality Of Patient Life, Kori L. Bullard
Honors Theses
America is known as the land of opportunity. People attempting to better their lives tend to see America as an opportunity to do so. This statement remains true for the American medical field. Americans are known as advanced in treatment options for various diseases. With this being said, there are few diseases that still bring forth complete fear in the minds of the people of America. In spite of this, "You have been diagnosed with cancer" is a statement that generates this fear. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Current treatments for cancer are invasive, expensive, …
Killing Cancer With Light, Kaitlyn Thomas
Killing Cancer With Light, Kaitlyn Thomas
Honors Theses
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively new treatment option in medicine including treating some types of cancers. PDT utilizes light to activate small molecules for treatment. Some of these molecules used as PDT agents are porphyrin derivatives. While PDT is currently being used in the fight against cancer, it has several limitations and is currently being used in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or radiation in order to be effective. This research focused on synthesizing a new zinc (II) porphyrin and incorporating a fluorescent sulfocycline and testing the compound on the MB 231 breast cancer cell line.
Once the metallated porphyrin was …
The Effect Of Exercise And Diet On Insulin Resistance, Kinsey M. Nelson
The Effect Of Exercise And Diet On Insulin Resistance, Kinsey M. Nelson
Honors Theses
This paper explores the effects of diet and exercise on an insulin-resistant individual, integrating the recommendations for exercise and diet as put forth by a variety of peer-reviewed articles. The purpose of this experiment was to determine if insulin resistance is a reversible condition, and if so, whether exercise alone, nutrition alone, or some combination of the two would be the most effective treatment. The results of this twenty-week trial suggest that insulin resistance may be reversible. Exercise alone was not found to be effective in decreasing insulin levels. Changing to a low-carbohydrate diet with no exercise saw a vast …
Jwh-018 And Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: Drug-Drug Interactions And Implications On Toxicity, Christopher O. Godwin
Jwh-018 And Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: Drug-Drug Interactions And Implications On Toxicity, Christopher O. Godwin
Honors Theses
Drug abuse has expanded from more well-known substances, such as cocaine and marijuana, to relatively new novel psychoactive substances. A group of these substances called synthetic cannabinoids have been increasing in usage throughout the 2000's, and these compounds carry significant and varying risks depending on the dose and composition of the synthetic cannabinoid. Patients have been observed having symptoms associated with high doses of synthetic cannabinoids when they take lower doses of the synthetic cannabinoid in addition to their antidepressant medication. In order to test the effects of co-administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRis) and synthetic cannabinoids, mice were …
Testing Bacterial Antibiotic Production Under Carbohydrate And Protein Starvation, Briley Baird
Testing Bacterial Antibiotic Production Under Carbohydrate And Protein Starvation, Briley Baird
Honors Theses
Bacteria produce antibiotics when they are under stress, including starvation stress. Bacteria were tested under carbohydrate and protein starvation against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli (due to the respective Gram positivity and negativity), in order to check for antibiotic production. The bacteria being tested were isolated by past Microbiology classes and stored in a -80°C freezer in the basement of Jones Science Center at Ouachita Baptist University. These test bacteria were grown on tryptic soy agar (TSA) to produce isolated bacterial colonies. Samples of isolated test colonies were then grown under conditions of carbohydrate starvation (M9 salts agar with 0.1 …
Dysregulation Of Human Phase I Enzymes In Apap Overdose Subjects With Low Alt Levels, Aaron Woodall
Dysregulation Of Human Phase I Enzymes In Apap Overdose Subjects With Low Alt Levels, Aaron Woodall
Honors Theses
Background: Acetaminophen (APAP) is a common analgesic that can cause liver injury and death in high doses. Changes in gene expression following APAP overdose may be more sensitive indicators of liver injury than the current clinical indicator, alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The aim of this study was to examine gene expression of Phase I enzymes in pediatric APAP overdose patients with low ALT levels (<75 lU/L), in order to understand the mechanism of APAP toxicity.
Methods: Blood samples were collected from control patients (no APAP exposure; N=5) and APAP overdose patients (N=S). Using the PAXgene system, RNA was extracted from the blood samples and cDNA was synthesized. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction …
75>The Outlook Of Occupational Therapy, Alexa Spinks
The Outlook Of Occupational Therapy, Alexa Spinks
Honors Theses
There is a strong demand for occupational therapists as well as a great job outlook. but there seems to be a lack of knowledge about occupational therapy among college students. The purpose of this thesis was to find out if more education about this growing field would lead to an increase in interest or consideration of the field of occupational therapy. College students (n=93) in Concepts of Wellness classes at Ouachita Baptist University were surveyed about their knowledge and perspective of occupational therapy before and after a brief presentation over information about occupational therapy was provided. There was a significant …
Using Light To Kill Cancer: Development Of A Novel Photodynamic Therapy, Alicia Hamilton Moore
Using Light To Kill Cancer: Development Of A Novel Photodynamic Therapy, Alicia Hamilton Moore
Honors Theses
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses special drugs called photosensitizing agents along with light to kill cancer cells. The specialized drugs only work after they have been activated or "turned on" by light. Photodynamic therapy may also be called photoradiation therapy, phototherapy, or photochemotherapy. In this research, I focused on the addition of four separate hydroxyl-amines to the unsubstituted porphyrin core, H2TPPC. The hydroxyl-amines attached to the porphyrin core were 5- amino-1-pentanol, 2-amino-2-ethyl-1, 3-propanediol, 3-amino-propanediol, and 5-aminovaleric acid. The novel water soluble PDT agents, H2TPP-A50H, H2TPP-2ET, H2TPP-3NH, and H2 …
