SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) emerged in the fall of 2019 and impacted millions of people worldwide deeming it a global pandemic. The virus primarily impacts the respiratory system, but has shown to affect other organ systems such as the kidneys, heart, and brain. Respiratory failure leading to Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) associated with COVID-19 requires ventilatory support and possibly prone therapy to increase lung volumes and prevention of atelectasis. My experience started initially by completing the COVID-19 Contact Tracing course offered through Johns Hopkins, which immersed me into the world of contact tracing which I had been completely unfamiliar with before. From the data that has been collected and compiled on SARS-CoV-2, or Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it has shown that there are unique qualities of the novel virus that leads to a hypercoagulable state in those diagnosed. To effectively treat those afflicted with this specific symptom of COVID-19, an understanding of the pathophysiology of the virus must be established to effectively treat and potentially prevent coagulopathy and the thrombotic events that can ensue.
