Pathophysiology Of Osteoporosis, Sarah Orr Aug 2019

Pathophysiology Of Osteoporosis, Sarah Orr

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Out of all the potential disease that may impact bones, osteoporosis is the most common. Over time it compromises the strength and integrity of the bone. As the bone becomes more compromised fragility fractures will result. A significant portion of the growing elderly population will be impacted by the disease current research indicates this is a growing drain on healthcare resources with a significant impact on morbidity and mortality for those who suffer fractures related to compromised bone integrity from osteoporosis. The disease is a world wide problem that will affect all countries and populations. While medications exist to help …

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Madeleine Smith Jul 2017

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Madeleine Smith

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

My chosen research topic is systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), otherwise commonly known as lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects many different body systems, and has no cure. There are a plethora of symptoms associated with the disease, and symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Additionally, lupus can progress gradually and has periods of flares and remission like several other autoimmune diseases. All of these factors combined can make this disease very hard to diagnose, and therefore treat. By researching and learning more about lupus, I strive to gain a better understanding of this disease and its …

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Gerd), Kaitlyn Newkirk Jan 2017

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Gerd), Kaitlyn Newkirk

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a commonly diagnosed disease process, affecting nearly 20% of the population. GERD can greatly hinder one’s quality of life. “Routine” surgical procedures can become potentially life threatening to those affected by this disease. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal malignancy. The advance practice nurse is responsible for accurately diagnosing a patient with GERD to avoid these potentially fatal consequences. The APN must recognize and acknowledge risk factors for GERD, assisting the patient in altering modifiable risk factors. Treatment options must be individualized to each patient and may include solely medical management or …

Aortic Stenosis, Cody Houseman Jul 2016

Aortic Stenosis, Cody Houseman

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

A recent influx of patients undergoing the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure sparked interest in the pathophysiologic process of Aortic Stenosis (AS), especially in the geriatric population. AS is mostly asymptomatic until later stages of the disease, which delays treatment and intervention leading to poor outcomes and prognosis, especially for those who are not surgical candidates. The TAVR procedure has allowed patients who are otherwise not candidates for open heart surgery undergo valve replacement in a low risk fashion, prolonging life and improving quality of life. AS causes an increase in afterload, decreasing outflow of blood from the left …

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Payne Oct 2014

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Payne

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Acute pancreatitis is a common diagnosis seen in intensive care units worldwide. The incidence of pancreatitis has increased over the last decade. It ranks third amongst the gastrointestinal diseases resulting in hospital admissions. The destructive complications of pancreatitis make it a life-threatening disease. If pancreatitis progresses to the severe form the mortality rate significantly increase from one percent to upwards of thirty percent. Pancreatitis is associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospital admissions(Goozen, Besselink, Santroort, & Bollen, 2013). An increased understanding of the pathophysiology of pancreatitis has changed the approach to treatment from early surgical treatment to …
