Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, necessitating a high demand for cardiac surgery. A unique stressor for cardiac surgery is an increased surgical stress response involving hyperglycemia. Perioperative hyperglycemia contributes to adverse postoperative outcomes following cardiac surgery. Current evidence examines blood glucose control and its effect on adverse postoperative outcomes, including sternal wound infections, acute kidney injury, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and an increased length of stay in the intensive care unit. Despite the link between hyperglycemia and poor postoperative outcomes, most facilities lack standardized guidelines for the perioperative management of blood glucose levels in cardiac surgery patients. …

Organ donation is a gift of life for both donors and recipients that can come from living donors, donors after cardiac death, or brain-dead donors (BDDs). Treating the donors with optimal care throughout the entire donation process is crucial due to organ supply shortages. Organs from BDDs are a large contributor to the number of organs donated each year and require critical care from the time of admission, declaration of brain death, and throughout the organ procurement surgery. Congestive Heart failure patients have the highest readmission rate within 30 days of discharge placing a significant burden on healthcare costs and quality of life for the patient and families. Community Emergency Medical Services are the first to respond to moderate to severe exacerbation of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) patients’ calls. Postoperative breastfeeding recommendations for lactating mothers by anesthesia providers are inconsistent and often inaccurate. Inappropriate recommendations have led to withholding of breastmilk to the infant, unnecessary disposal of breastmilk, surgical delay, exposure of an infant to high levels of drugs in breastmilk, and early cessation of breastfeeding. The purpose of the scholarly project was to develop a set of evidenced-based practice guideline recommendations and a proposed implementation plan for anesthesia providers to use in support of breastfeeding mothers who recover from surgery. Purpose: This project used the modified Delphi technique to determine if consensus exists on the need for clinical practice guidelines among experts in the fields of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, and yoga.
