Importance Of Deep Inspiration Breath Hold For Left Breast Cancer Treatment, Cassandra Benderavich, Elaine Halesey Jan 2023

Importance Of Deep Inspiration Breath Hold For Left Breast Cancer Treatment, Cassandra Benderavich, Elaine Halesey

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Abstract

This project explains the importance of deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) technique for treating left breast and chest wall tumors. General statistics, definition of gating and DIBH, inclusion and exclusion criteria, dose reduction, differences of free breathing and DIBH techniques, and expected outcome are also discussed. Breast cancer is the leading cause of female deaths in the United States, and left breast cancer diagnosis is more common than right breast cancer diagnosis. Left breast cancer diagnosis accounts for 50.8% of breast cancer diagnosis and right breast cancer accounts for the remaining 49.2%. The risk of breast cancer diagnosis in …

Radiation Oncology: Breast Cancer

Student Researcher: Julia Hornberger

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Elaine Halesey, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(QM)(ARRT)

Abstract

This project explains breast cancer and the role of radiation therapy. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in the world for women. Types of breast cancers, the pathology and risk factors associated, the signs and symptoms, imaging, simulation setup, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as some general statistics and prevention are discussed. In 2022, 280,000 new cases of breast cancer occurred with 40,000 deaths occuring. Breast cancer should be known as it effects 1 in 8 women are diagnosed within their lifetime. …

Prone Versus Supine Position For Breast Cancer Treatment, Alexis Wychock Jan 2022

Prone Versus Supine Position For Breast Cancer Treatment, Alexis Wychock

Student Research Poster Presentations 2022

This project explains the two most common positions to treat breast cancer: prone and supine. Radiation therapy, breast cancer, complications of radiation therapy to the breast, and the new set-up for prone positioning called Crawl Couch are also discussed on the poster. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States. Men can also develop breast cancer, but it is less common. Supine is performed utilizing deep inspiration breath hold and the prone is completed using free breathing. Prone and supine are the two positions used but some researchers found a better way to treat …

Invasive Mammary Carcinoma in Young Women

Jessica Ravert

Gina Capitano Ed.D.,R.T. (R)

Abstract

This research is a case study of a 34-year-old patient that presented with a right breast lump measuring 1.9cm found to have invasive mammary carcinoma. Diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound were followed by ultrasound guided breast biopsy to make the diagnosis.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women between the ages of 15-39 inthe United States. Annual mammograms are recommended to begin at age 40, therefore younger women often do not have mammograms or breast ultrasounds unless they have symptoms. As a result, younger …

The Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Quality Of Life And Muscle Strength In Patients Undergoing Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review, Rachel A. Carmody, Evelyn S. Logie, Hannah J. Larkin, Kaitlyn E. Yurenda, Zachary M. Mason Jan 2021

The Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Quality Of Life And Muscle Strength In Patients Undergoing Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review, Rachel A. Carmody, Evelyn S. Logie, Hannah J. Larkin, Kaitlyn E. Yurenda, Zachary M. Mason

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and prostate cancer are two of the most common cancers seen in females and males respectively worldwide. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and androgen deprivation therapy are essential to combat cancerous cells. However, the lasting side effects of these lifesaving treatments can impact an individual’s quality of life and muscle strength without appropriate intervention. While exercise has been shown to be beneficial for patients with cancer, there is limited understanding of the effects of resistance training when performed concurrently with medical interventions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of resistance training …

Supine Vs. Prone Positioning For Breast Radiation, Jennifer Curtin Jan 2020

Supine Vs. Prone Positioning For Breast Radiation, Jennifer Curtin

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

When treating breast cancer patients with radiation therapy, it is important to find treatment techniques that reduce the dose to organs at risk without compromising the target tumor volume. Due to advances in cancer diagnosis, patients are diagnosed and treated earlier causing them to live longer. However, these patients are at greater risk for developing long-term complications from treatment, specifically cardiac toxicity and cardiac diseases. Research was evaluated regarding the best treatment position for breast cancer patients to reduce the dose to organs at risk, focusing on the dose to the heart. Every breast cancer patient varies in breast anatomy, …

Breast Imaging: Comparison Of Mammography, Ultrasound, And Mri, Samantha Coleman Jan 2020

Breast Imaging: Comparison Of Mammography, Ultrasound, And Mri, Samantha Coleman

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Breast imaging is an integral medical examination for both screening and diagnosis of breast disease. Through literature review and use of a case study comparing mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the research illustrates the essential role of each imaging modality in differentiating breast tissue characteristics that lend to rendering a diagnosis. The case study showcases an example of mammography being the first choice of imaging with ultrasound and MRI utilized to further characterize the findings seen on mammography. For effective patient management, biopsy is required for final diagnosis of pathology with ultrasound as the preferred modality for guidance …
