Ultrasound (sonography) is a primary imaging modality predominantly used in the Diagnostic Radiology department to aid in the findings of internal pathological conditions. Sonography has been used for medical diagnosis since the early 1970’s; however, in comparison to other imaging modalities, it is relatively young and evolving. Since Ian Donald’s discovery in obstetrical ultrasound, there has been a significant growth in Maternal and Fetal Medicine as well as an explosion in the use of non-medical obstetrical imaging, better known as keepsake or entertainment ultrasound. Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma (IBC) is a rare type of breast cancer with a high incidence of metastases that makes the breast tender, red, swollen, and sometimes exhibits an orange peel appearance. These type of cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of the breast and develops rapidly. Risks factors include sex, lifestyle, age, reproductive factors, race, obesity, and family history. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Approximately 1 in 8 women have a risk of developing breast cancer. Sonographers are healthcare professionals who perform medical diagnostic procedures that use high frequency sound waves to produce visual images of human organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. Sonography students must attend either secondary degree programs or postsecondary degree programs, depending on the country in which they receive their education. In this Literature Review, a comparison of the secondary and post-secondary educational process within Australia, Canada, and the United States will be discussed.
