Qualitative Exploration Of The Perceptions Of Nursing Undergraduates Regarding Family Care At End-Of-Life, Penny A. Alt-Gehrman Oct 2018

Qualitative Exploration Of The Perceptions Of Nursing Undergraduates Regarding Family Care At End-Of-Life, Penny A. Alt-Gehrman

Dissertations (1934 -)

Background/Purpose: Family care at end-of-life is delivered by nurses and includes communication and explanations, providing emotional support for the family, creating an environment in which death occurs with dignity, providing privacy, facilitating visitation, and honoring and meeting cultural and personal family values (Beckstrand et al., 2011; Bloomer et al., 2013; Cronin et al., 2015; Heidari & Norouzadeh, 2014). There appears to be a gap in the empirical evidence and literature on this topic. Regarding the knowledge and comfort of student nurses, and subsequently nurses, in family care at the end-of-life, there is disparity. To determine what must be taught to …

Comparing Interprofessional Socialization In Mixed Discipline And Nursing Student Only Cohorts, Kara Groom Oct 2018

Comparing Interprofessional Socialization In Mixed Discipline And Nursing Student Only Cohorts, Kara Groom

Dissertations (1934 -)

A main cause of patient safety incidents are avoidable failures in communication between health professionals. In response, healthcare has entered an era of interprofessionalism in education and patient care. A challenge to substantiating the value of interprofessional education (IPE) has been a limited number of studies that assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared to education interventions in which professions were learning separately from one another. This research project helps fill this gap and measures the differences in student interprofessional socialization (IS) between an IPE cohort and a usual care group of one-discipline learners. The purpose was to compare IS …

Knee Extensor Fatigability During Different Resistance Exercise Protocols In Young And Old Adults, Jose Delgadillo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Aging is associated with decreased muscle strength, power, and contraction velocity, and increased fatigability of the lower limb muscles during dynamic contractions. The aims of this thesis were to compare young in and old men and women in: (1) fatigability of the knee extensors for two types of dynamic fatiguing protocols that are the basis of resistance training protocols, and (2) the central and peripheral mechanisms of fatigue during the two types of dynamic fatiguing protocols. Twenty young (19-24, 22.2 ± 1.3 years, men = 10) and twenty old adults (64-85, 73.8 ± 5.4, men = 10) performed: two different …

Evaluation Of Clinical Growth And Nursing Student Motivation In The Traditional Clinical Learning Environment, Jessica Barkimer Oct 2018

Evaluation Of Clinical Growth And Nursing Student Motivation In The Traditional Clinical Learning Environment, Jessica Barkimer

Dissertations (1934 -)

Evaluation of students in the traditional clinical learning environment is difficult. There remains a lack of standard guidelines to evaluate students using valid and reliable instruments as well as inconsistent processes with lack of interrater reliability standards between educators. A need exists for fair and consistent evaluation of nursing students. When the clinical educator uses a standard evaluation process and understands students’ motivation for learning, adaptations in teaching strategies and education on self-regulatory strategies can be implemented to enhance learning and measure clinical growth. This research study used a prospective, correlational, pre-test/post-test design to examine the relationship between student motivation …

Home Health Care Effect In Post-Discharge Return To Hospital, Danielle M. Siclovan Oct 2018

Home Health Care Effect In Post-Discharge Return To Hospital, Danielle M. Siclovan

Dissertations (1934 -)

Background: Home Health Care (HHC), the most commonly used bridge strategy for transitioning from hospital to home-based care, is expected to contribute to ongoing readmission avoidance efforts. However, evidence suggests HHC patients are readmitted more frequently than patients without HHC. Determining the effectiveness of HHC as a readmission reduction strategy requires a comparison sample of patients with similar characteristics referred and not referred to HHC. Methods: For this matched-sample comparative study, the available sample (n=18,774) included 3,629 patients referred to HHC and 15,145 non-HHC patients, from which 2,718 pairs matched 1:1 were obtained using exact and Mahalanobis distance matching. Unadjusted …

Understanding Water Diffusion In Experimental Spinal Cord Injury Remote From Injury Epicenter, Alice Motovylyak Oct 2018

Understanding Water Diffusion In Experimental Spinal Cord Injury Remote From Injury Epicenter, Alice Motovylyak

Dissertations (1934 -)

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has demonstrated success as a biomarker of spinal cord injury (SCI) severity as shown from numerous preclinical studies. However, artifacts from stabilization hardware at the lesion have precluded its use for longitudinal assessments. Previous research has documented ex vivo diffusion changes in the spinal cord both caudal and rostral to the injury epicenter. The aim of this dissertation was to quantify the structural changes that lead to different diffusion measures in the rat cervical spinal cord after a thoracic contusion injury in an attempt to find a biomarker of injury. Animals received a thoracic contusion injury …

Orthodontic Open-Coil Spring Deactivation Forces Differ With Varying Activation Levels, Ryan Lubinsky Jul 2018

Orthodontic Open-Coil Spring Deactivation Forces Differ With Varying Activation Levels, Ryan Lubinsky

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Coil springs are used in orthodontics to deliver forces to move teeth. However, the optimal amount of activation to produce predictable, continuous deactivation forces, for the purpose of orthodontic tooth movement, is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the deactivation force characteristics of nickel-titanium open-coil springs after varying levels of activation. Methods: Four open-coil spring products were evaluated: Dentsply GAC 100 gram and 150 gram, Orthoclassic Orthodontics Medium 150 gram, and American Orthodontics nickel-titanium springs. Open-coil springs were compressed (activation) with a universal testing machine to 20, 40, 60, or 80% of original length (15 mm; n=15/product/activation …

Inference And Analysis Of Multilayered Mirna-Mediated Networks In Cancer, Duc Do Jul 2018

Inference And Analysis Of Multilayered Mirna-Mediated Networks In Cancer, Duc Do

Dissertations (1934 -)

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding transcripts that can regulate gene expression, thereby controlling diverse biological processes. Aberrant disruptions of miRNA expression and their interactions with other biological agents (e.g., coding and noncoding transcripts) have been associated with several types of cancer. The goal of this dissertation is to use multidimensional genomic data to model two different gene regulation mechanisms by miRNAs in cancer. This dissertation results from two research projects. The first project investigates a miRNA-mediated gene regulation mechanism called competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) interactions, which suggests that some transcripts can indirectly regulate one another's activity through their interactions with …

Orthodontic Treatment Planning Using Direct Visual Approximation Of Arch Length Discrepancy And Cephalometric Analyses, Kathleen Rouse Vaught Jul 2018

Orthodontic Treatment Planning Using Direct Visual Approximation Of Arch Length Discrepancy And Cephalometric Analyses, Kathleen Rouse Vaught

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Space analysis and radiographic analyses are crucial elements in developing an orthodontic treatment plan. It is imperative that the orthodontist makes accurate measurements in order to come up with the most effective treatment options for each patient. Some practitioners refrain from direct measurements to determine arch length discrepancies and instead determine the amount of crowding by using direct visual approximation. In addition, more orthodontists do not routinely trace all cephalograms taken. If more and more orthodontists are using direct visual approximation to determine angular cephalometric measurements, it is important to assess the accuracy and reliability of these measurements. This …

Comparison Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Recall Of Orthodontic Information Following An Electronic Reminder, Michael Lenz Jul 2018

Comparison Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Recall Of Orthodontic Information Following An Electronic Reminder, Michael Lenz

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Patients and parents in dentistry often do not remember important information disclosed during the informed consent process, so improvement in the delivery of information is needed. This study explored the effect of an emailed narrated instructional PowerPoint on the immediate vs. delayed recall and comprehension of informed consent information in orthodontics. Thirty-two subjects were recruited from a university and private practice orthodontic clinic. At the initial visit, subjects were alternately assigned to one of two groups and were presented with a mock orthodontic treatment plan and informed consent presentation for a pretend patient. Immediately following the presentation, the subjects’ verbal …

Materials and Methods: Extracted human premolars (n=20/group) were randomly divided and prepared by acid etching, followed by application of primer or sealant. Group 1, the control group, used Transbond XT Primer (3M Unitek). Groups 2 and 3 were prepared with the sealants L.E.D. Pro Seal (Reliance Orthodontic Products) and Opal Seal (Opal Orthodontics) respectively. Transbond XT Adhesive was applied to a …

Change In Bone Mineral Density Among High Frequency Apheresis Blood Donors, Walter Bialkowski Jul 2018

Change In Bone Mineral Density Among High Frequency Apheresis Blood Donors, Walter Bialkowski

Dissertations (1934 -)

Exposure to citrate anticoagulant during apheresis blood donation induces significant decreases in serum ionized calcium with subsequent perturbations to parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and markers of bone remodeling. Cross-sectional studies of bone mineral density (BMD) among apheresis donors exhibit conflicting results. Resolving the potential impact of the highest apheresis donation frequency represents a significant knowledge gap in ensuring adequate protections for volunteer apheresis blood donors. ALTRUYST (NCT02655055) was a randomized, longitudinal, controlled clinical trial designed to determine if repeated exposure to citrate through apheresis donation reduces BMD. Male donors, 18-65 years of age with no more than five previous apheresis …

Motor Compensation During Lower Limb Pedaling After Stroke, Brice Thomas Cleland Jul 2018

Motor Compensation During Lower Limb Pedaling After Stroke, Brice Thomas Cleland

Dissertations (1934 -)

Long-term motor dysfunction in the lower limb is common after stroke. One potential contributor is motor compensation, a behavior in which functions originally performed by the paretic limb are performed by the non-paretic limb. Compensation in chronic stroke may contribute to long-term motor dysfunction by limiting functional ability, impairing future recovery, and eliciting maladaptive neuroplasticity. The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the impact of compensation on motor function and brain activation during lower limb pedaling and identify elements that produce this behavior. To achieve this purpose, we evaluated muscle activation and motor performance when compensation was prevented. During …

Pre-Death Grief, Resourcefulness And Perceived Stress Among Care Givers Of Partners With Young Onset Dementia, Karie Kobiske

Dissertations (1934 -)

Over 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with young onset dementia (YOD). YOD is the dementia diagnosed prior to the age of 65. Most persons of YOD are cared for by their partners. Caregiving for a partner diagnosed with YOD has unique challenges including multiple losses resulting from the functional, cognitive, and behavioral declines which can be demanding and stressful. These losses experienced by the caregiver of a partner diagnosed with YOD have been termed pre-death grief. Caregivers of partners with YOD often report high levels of burden and stress resulting in depression, anxiety, hopelessness, as well as increase morbidity and mortality. …

Understanding Relationships Between Early Life Toxic Stress, Childhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage, And Allostatic Load In Adolescence, Amanda King Jul 2018

Understanding Relationships Between Early Life Toxic Stress, Childhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage, And Allostatic Load In Adolescence, Amanda King

Dissertations (1934 -)

Chronic disease prevalence among children and adolescents is rising, which is thought to result in part from elevations in allostatic load (AL). AL is the cumulative physiological dysregulation that results from exposure to biological, social and environmental stressors over time. Socioeconomic disparities in chronic disease and AL have been well-documented in adult populations, including links between childhood socioeconomic disadvantage (CSD) and AL, yet little is known as to whether CSD may begin to impact AL earlier in life. Differential exposure and vulnerability to stress among racial/ethnic minorities may increase risk for elevated AL among those experiencing CSD. Framed by the …

Comparison Of Different Temperatures On Bending Properties Of Six Niti Endodontic File Systems, Sukbum Yoo Apr 2018

Comparison Of Different Temperatures On Bending Properties Of Six Niti Endodontic File Systems, Sukbum Yoo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Manufacturers claim that modern NiTi files with proprietary heat treatment transform at higher temperatures, thus staying more martensite and being more resistant to cyclic fatigue and more flexible. There are some studies comparing the effect of body temperature and room temperature on cyclic fatigue of these newer NiTi files. However, there is not yet a study published for evaluating the relationship between bending properties of NiTi instruments and temperature following the ISO 3630-1 guideline. The objective of this study was to evaluate how temperature affects the bending properties of six different brands of NiTi rotary instruments with different transformation …

Investigation Of Reactive Oxygen Species Production In The Rat Lung Using Optical Imaging, Nina Friedly Apr 2018

Investigation Of Reactive Oxygen Species Production In The Rat Lung Using Optical Imaging, Nina Friedly

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Oxidative stress, the imbalance between production of oxidants or reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant activity, plays a key role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic lung diseases. The objective of this thesis was to develop a robust protocol for measuring the rate of H2O2 production in isolated perfused rat lungs and to determine the cellular sources of that rate using Amplex Red (AR). For a given lung, AR (25 mM) along with horseradish peroxidase (5 U/ml) and ascorbate oxidase (1U/ml) were added to a perfusate reservoir that was recirculated through the lungs and sampled at 5 minute intervals …

Mechanisms Of Fatigue With Aging: Evidence From The Whole-Limb To The Single Cell In Humans, Christopher W. Sundberg Apr 2018

Mechanisms Of Fatigue With Aging: Evidence From The Whole-Limb To The Single Cell In Humans, Christopher W. Sundberg

Dissertations (1934 -)

Aging is accompanied by a loss of muscle mass and increased fatigability of limb muscles making it difficult for old adults to generate the force and power necessary to perform daily activities, such as ascending a flight of stairs. The mechanisms for the age-related increase in fatigability in old and very old adults (≥80 yrs) and whether there are differences between men and women are unknown. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the mechanisms for the age-related increase in fatigability in men and women by studying fatigue at the level of the whole-limb and within the muscle cells. …

The Famous Names Discrimination Task As A Biomarker Of Alzheimer's Disease Risk: An Erp Study, Elizabeth Rose Paitel

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Current ERP research emphasizes age- and pathology-related declines in neural processing in the form of attenuated amplitudes and prolonged latencies. Notably, there is a gap in the ERP literature regarding neural processing trajectories in the time between healthy young adulthood and clinical MCI/AD samples. fMRI research, however, has demonstrated periods of increased, compensatory activation in healthy, cognitively intact APOE ɛ4 carriers both during resting state and event-related tasks (Bondi, Houston, Eyler, & Brown, 2005; Evans et al., 2014; Filippini et al., 2009; Rao et al., 2015), consistent with compensatory theories of cognitive aging (Cabeza, 2002; Park & Reuter-Lorenz, 2009; Reuter-Lorenz …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Patient Medical And Dental Treatment Histories, And Mronj-Related Events, Jon Irelan Apr 2018

A Retrospective Analysis Of Patient Medical And Dental Treatment Histories, And Mronj-Related Events, Jon Irelan

Master's Theses (2009 -)

With patient medical histories continuing to increase in complexity, dental professionals are faced with the task of delivering necessary care while respecting said medical history. Though advances have been made in combating osteopathies like osteoporosis and bone-related malignancies through medicinal intervention, these same medications can alter the bone’s ability to heal properly. The result of this inability to heal can be medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether patients at risk for MRONJ treated at Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSoD) demonstrated any complications following endodontic therapies associated with MRONJ. During the …

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Marginal fit has been defined as the gap between the prepared tooth and the intaglio surface of the restoration. Internal gap is the perpendicular measurement from the internal surface of the casting to the axial wall of the preparation. Selective laser melting has been used for fabrication of metal copings such as Co-Cr base alloys and Au-Pt noble alloys. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different finish line designs on the marginal and internal fit of metal copings made from high noble, 25% noble and base alloys manufactured by SLM technology. Material and Methods: …

Compressed Sensing For Few-View Multi-Pinhole Spect With Applications To Preclinical Imaging, Benjamin Michael Rizzo Apr 2018

Compressed Sensing For Few-View Multi-Pinhole Spect With Applications To Preclinical Imaging, Benjamin Michael Rizzo

Dissertations (1934 -)

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) can be used to identify and quantify changes in molecular and cellular targets involved in disease. A radiopharmaceutical that targets a specific metabolic function is administered to a subject and planar projections are formed by imaging emissions at different view angles around the subject. The reconstruction task is to determine the distribution of radioactivity within the subject from the projections. We present a reconstruction approach that utilizes only a few view angles, resulting in a highly underdetermined system, which could be used for dynamic imaging applications designed to quantify physiologic processes altered with disease. …

The purpose of this qualitative exploratory-descriptive study, using a thematic analysis approach, was employed to explore 15 US born …

The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke Apr 2018

The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke

Dissertations (1934 -)

The proportion of older adults in the U.S. is rapidly increasing. One-third of Medicare expenditures occur in the final year of life, with nearly half resulting from acute exacerbations of chronic, progressive diseases(Riley & Lubitz, 2010). Older adults prefer comfort over life-sustaining care, and decreased intensity of care is associated with improved quality of life at the end-of-life (EOL). Advance directives (ADs) have been proposed as mechanisms to improve congruence between patient wishes and EOL care; however, the impact of ADs on care delivered in the acute care setting at the EOL for this population is unclear. A retrospective, correlation …

Chronic Stress And Reproductive Function In Female Childhood Cancer Survivors, Theresa Marie Hardy Apr 2018

Chronic Stress And Reproductive Function In Female Childhood Cancer Survivors, Theresa Marie Hardy

Dissertations (1934 -)

Reproductive dysfunction is reported as a major concern for childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and is highly correlated with quality of life in this population. Few predictors of post-treatment reproductive function in CCS have been identified. CCS report high levels of psychological stress. Psychological stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which can disrupt reproductive function. The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore the relationship between perceived stress, biomarkers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity, gonadotropin levels, and anti-Müllerian hormone levels in female CCS. This exploratory cross-sectional study included female cancer survivors (ages 16-35) treated for pediatric cancer at the Royal Hospital for Sick …
