A main cause of patient safety incidents are avoidable failures in communication between health professionals. In response, healthcare has entered an era of interprofessionalism in education and patient care. A challenge to substantiating the value of interprofessional education (IPE) has been a limited number of studies that assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared to education interventions in which professions were learning separately from one another. Aging is associated with decreased muscle strength, power, and contraction velocity, and increased fatigability of the lower limb muscles during dynamic contractions. The aims of this thesis were to compare young in and old men and women in: (1) fatigability of the knee extensors for two types of dynamic fatiguing protocols that are the basis of resistance training protocols, and (2) the central and peripheral mechanisms of fatigue during the two types of dynamic fatiguing protocols. There remains a lack of standard guidelines to evaluate students using valid and reliable instruments as well as inconsistent processes with lack of interrater reliability standards between educators. Background: Home Health Care (HHC), the most commonly used bridge strategy for transitioning from hospital to home-based care, is expected to contribute to ongoing readmission avoidance efforts. However, evidence suggests HHC patients are readmitted more frequently than patients without HHC. Determining the effectiveness of HHC as a readmission reduction strategy requires a comparison sample of patients with similar characteristics referred and not referred to HHC. Methods: For this matched-sample comparative study, the available sample (n=18,774) included 3,629 patients referred to HHC and 15,145 non-HHC patients, from which 2,718 pairs matched 1:1 were obtained using exact and Mahalanobis distance matching. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has demonstrated success as a biomarker of spinal cord injury (SCI) severity as shown from numerous preclinical studies. However, artifacts from stabilization hardware at the lesion have precluded its use for longitudinal assessments. Previous research has documented ex vivo diffusion changes in the spinal cord both caudal and rostral to the injury epicenter. Coil springs are used in orthodontics to deliver forces to move teeth. However, the optimal amount of activation to produce predictable, continuous deactivation forces, for the purpose of orthodontic tooth movement, is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the deactivation force characteristics of nickel-titanium open-coil springs after varying levels of activation. Methods: Four open-coil spring products were evaluated: Dentsply GAC 100 gram and 150 gram, Orthoclassic Orthodontics Medium 150 gram, and American Orthodontics nickel-titanium springs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding transcripts that can regulate gene expression, thereby controlling diverse biological processes. Aberrant disruptions of miRNA expression and their interactions with other biological agents (e.g., coding and noncoding transcripts) have been associated with several types of cancer. The goal of this dissertation is to use multidimensional genomic data to model two different gene regulation mechanisms by miRNAs in cancer. This dissertation results from two research projects. It is imperative that the orthodontist makes accurate measurements in order to come up with the most effective treatment options for each patient. Some practitioners refrain from direct measurements to determine arch length discrepancies and instead determine the amount of crowding by using direct visual approximation. This study explored the effect of an emailed narrated instructional PowerPoint on the immediate vs. delayed recall and comprehension of informed consent information in orthodontics. Introduction: Mechanical vibration (MV) possesses anti-resorptive properties that can possibly enhance the stability of the dentition during retention, lessening the potential for relapse of teeth to their initial positions. In this project, we established a mouse model and investigated the effects of MV on bone modeling during orthodontic retention. The purpose of this study was to validate a 3D musculoskeletal model in OpenSim and assess OpenSim’s ability to determine muscle-length variation during ambulation. An 18 camera motion capture system was used to analyze 20 healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 35. Following data collection, the data was processed through OpenSim and Visual3D. The kinematic output processed through the OpenSim model was then compared to the kinematic output of the validated Visual3D model to validate the OpenSim model. Introduction: Sealants are used in orthodontics to help prevent demineralization during treatment. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the shear bond strength (SBS) between two different resin sealants bonded to teeth. Materials and Methods: Extracted human premolars (n=20/group) were randomly divided and prepared by acid etching, followed by application of primer or sealant. Exposure to citrate anticoagulant during apheresis blood donation induces significant decreases in serum ionized calcium with subsequent perturbations to parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and markers of bone remodeling. Cross-sectional studies of bone mineral density (BMD) among apheresis donors exhibit conflicting results. Resolving the potential impact of the highest apheresis donation frequency represents a significant knowledge gap in ensuring adequate protections for volunteer apheresis blood donors. Long-term motor dysfunction in the lower limb is common after stroke. One potential contributor is motor compensation, a behavior in which functions originally performed by the paretic limb are performed by the non-paretic limb. Compensation in chronic stroke may contribute to long-term motor dysfunction by limiting functional ability, impairing future recovery, and eliciting maladaptive neuroplasticity. Over 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with young onset dementia (YOD). YOD is the dementia diagnosed prior to the age of 65. Most persons of YOD are cared for by their partners. Caregiving for a partner diagnosed with YOD has unique challenges including multiple losses resulting from the functional, cognitive, and behavioral declines which can be demanding and stressful. These losses experienced by the caregiver of a partner diagnosed with YOD have been termed pre-death grief. Chronic disease prevalence among children and adolescents is rising, which is thought to result in part from elevations in allostatic load (AL). AL is the cumulative physiological dysregulation that results from exposure to biological, social and environmental stressors over time. Socioeconomic disparities in chronic disease and AL have been well-documented in adult populations, including links between childhood socioeconomic disadvantage (CSD) and AL, yet little is known as to whether CSD may begin to impact AL earlier in life. Oxidative stress, the imbalance between production of oxidants or reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant activity, plays a key role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic lung diseases. The objective of this thesis was to develop a robust protocol for measuring the rate of H2O2 production in isolated perfused rat lungs and to determine the cellular sources of that rate using Amplex Red (AR). Objective: To study the factors effecting the survival of teeth with non-surgical root canal therapy (NS-RCT) and to compare the transitions between failure states for teeth treated with NS-RCT based on initial provider type. Methods: Insurance claims were analyzed for 438,487 initial NS-RCT procedures to determine the effect of provider type, patient age, tooth position, presence of post/core, and crown at 90 days on tooth survival. Kaplan Meier survival estimates were evaluated for 1, 3, 5, and 10 years and adjusted hazard ratios (aHR’s) were calculated. Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) can be used to identify and quantify changes in molecular and cellular targets involved in disease. A radiopharmaceutical that targets a specific metabolic function is administered to a subject and planar projections are formed by imaging emissions at different view angles around the subject. The reconstruction task is to determine the distribution of radioactivity within the subject from the projections. Reproductive dysfunction is reported as a major concern for childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and is highly correlated with quality of life in this population. Few predictors of post-treatment reproductive function in CCS have been identified. CCS report high levels of psychological stress. Psychological stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which can disrupt reproductive function.
