Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (Amc) With Amyoplasia: A Rare Case, Maria Pais Dr., Leslie Edward Lewis Dr., Jayashree Purkayastha Dr, Disha Shree B S Dr.
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Background: Arthrogryposis is a term used to describe the development of nonprogressive contractures in one or more body parts before birth (congenitally). A contracture is a condition in which a joint becomes permanently stuck in a bent (flexed) or straightened (extended) position, limiting movement of the affected joint totally or partially. When congenital contractures affect only one body part, they are referred to as isolated congenital contractures rather than arthrogryposis. Clubfoot is the most common solitary congenital contracture. Arthrogryposis multiplex refers to arthrogryposis that affects two or more separate parts of the body.

An Extreme Preterm Infant With Multiple Complications: A Case Study, Yashoda Sathish
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Extreme preterm birth is the most critical risk factor, which leads to adverse effects on medical and developmental outcomes. We report a case of an extremely preterm infant admitted to NICU and had a prolonged period of non-invasive ventilation. The neonate had hepatosplenomegaly and antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral treatment. She was recovered and shown significant improvement in her health status and growth and development were assessed until five years of corrected age.

A Rare Presentation Of Miller Fisher Syndrome, A Rare Variant Of Guillain Barre Syndrome, Saumya Mittal
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Guillain Barre syndrome presents as acute onset of gradually progressive ascending flaccid paralysis with hyporeflexia or areflexia. The variants are acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, acute motor axonal neuropathy, acute motor sensory axonal neuropathy, and Miller Fisher syndrome. Miller Fisher syndrome includes symptoms that form a classical triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and hyporeflexia or areflexia. This case presents a case of Miller Fisher syndrome with atypical features wherein the patient had normal reflexes and his reflexes remained normal in follow-up.

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome is a rare disease with positive antiphospholipid antibodies that progresses to a life-threatening condition resulting in multiple organ dysfunction and thromboses. Here is a 19-year young woman who presented to the emergency room in a haemodynamically unstable condition requiring immediate mechanical ventilator support. She had involvement of the disease in the respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, and central nervous systems. She also developed gangrene of the left toes for which amputation was done. She was successfully treated with Dexamethasone Cyclophosphamide Pulse (DCP) therapy. The collaborative care by the health team members in the intensive care unit was successful in …

Objective: To find the effectiveness of mirror therapy on upper and lower limb function among stroke patients with hemiparesis admitted at Govt Medical College, Kannur. Methods: Quasi experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-test post-test research design was used among 24 stroke patients with hemiparesis who met inclusion criteria by using consecutive sampling technique and allotted to both experimental (n=12) and control group (n=12). Mirror therapy was administered to the experimental group daily for two weeks. A semi-structured interview schedule and Fugl-Meyer …

Post-Partum Haemorrhage - The Ultimate Challenge To Emergency Medicine, Akshata Ammembal
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality globally. This report elaborates the diagnosis and treatment of a 31-year-old woman with PPH, treated in our tertiary centre. On presentation, she showed all signs of hypovolemic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Persistent fresh vaginal bleeding led to the decision to perform an emergency hysterectomy. She required massive transfusion but consequently developed transfusion-associated lung injury (TRALI), for which she was effectively treated. She made a full recovery leading to discharge 12 days after admission. This article stresses the importance of the multi-disciplinary approach and rapid, coordinated management of emergency …

Objective: The objective of the study was to find the effect and compare five different body positions (sitting with back support, supine, sitting without back support, semi-fowler and standing) on peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and respiratory rate (RR) in COPD patients. Method: One group repeated measures design was chosen for …

Fibromatosis colli presents in 0.4% of infants as a firm palpable mass in the middle or lower thirds of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.1 The typical age of presentation ranges between two to four weeks of life. It is unilateral in 75% of cases and occurs due to fibrosis within the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Although no single entity has been able to explain the etiology, birth trauma is often attributable. Ultrasonography is the initial investigation of choice. This benign condition is often treated conservatively, rarely requiring surgical intervention. Here are two cases from our centre

Background: Glomus Jugulare tumours arise within the jugular foramen of the temporal lobe. Treatment and management of these very rare, slow growing and hypervascular tumours are always challenging. Patients with these tumours will have their lower cranial nerves affected. With the involvement of lower cranial nerves, the patients may have altered functions of swallowing, chewing, hearing, speaking, balance and coordination. Thus, these patients can be managed effectively by a nurse with the thorough knowledge and understanding of the signs and symptoms. The nurses taking care of these patients should anticipate these dysfunctions and plan the care of patients accordingly.
