Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Self-Perception, And Stuttering Severity, Colleen Hogan
Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Self-Perception, And Stuttering Severity, Colleen Hogan
Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders
The present study investigated the possibility of a relationship between self-compassion, self-perception, and stuttering severity in adults who stutter. Four adults who identify as people who stutter were administered the Self-Compassion Scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Adults, the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering, and the Stuttering Severity Instrument. Results indicated a negative correlation between stuttering severity and self-compassion. A relationship was found between self-perception and stuttering severity and self-compassion in only one participant. It was concluded that practices of self-compassion may be beneficial in speech therapy for adults who stutter, and that both self-perception and self-compassion scales …
Communicating Consent: An Investigation Of Predictors Of College Student Sexual Consent Communication, Erin L. Link
Communicating Consent: An Investigation Of Predictors Of College Student Sexual Consent Communication, Erin L. Link
Theses and Dissertations
Often, sexual consent is only discussed and explored in the context of sexual assault. While consent is often the deciding factor to determine if a crime occurred, consent is also a vital part of an equally enjoyable sexual encounter. The present study examines a variety of variables effects on consent attitudes, norms, and communication behaviors to attempt to identify predictors of college student consent communication. Findings and recommendations are discussed that highlight the necessity of viewing consent as a communicative act.

Speech-Language Pathology Student Anxiety, Expectations, And Needs During Clinical Practicum, Laura W. Plexico, Allison M. Plumb, Daniel E. Phillips
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The current study investigates clinical supervision with regard to millennial student clinician expectations, needs, and anxiety related to the supervisory process. Seven graduate students in speech-language pathology completed questionnaires at six points during their graduate education – The Student Clinician Anxiety Test (Sleight, 1985), as well as Larson’s Supervisory Expectations Rating Scale and Supervisory Needs Rating Scale (Larson, 1981). Results indicated that supervisory needs and expectations were significantly greater pre-practicum when compared to post-externship, with no significant changes in student clinician anxiety noted across six semesters of graduate training. Student clinicians demonstrated less anxiety than Sleight’s data, but had greater …

Bridging The Gap: An Integrated Approach To Facilitating Foundational Learning Of Neuroanatomy And Neurophysiology In Graduate-Level Speech-Language Pathology Coursework, Lisa A. Vinney, Jennine M.T. Harvey
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The current study examined whether the integration of foundational neuroanatomy and neurophysiology content, across a pair of medically-based, disorder-specific courses (motor speech disorders and aphasia), promoted students’ abilities to describe common neurological constructs and apply them to clinical cases. Specifically, student responses to case questions were rubric-scored following their completion of five neuroanatomy and neurophysiology online modules independently and after in-class instructional augmentation of each module’s content. Students’ own perceptions of this integrated curriculum were also surveyed and coded into themes. Rubric scores, evaluating content knowledge of the brainstem, spinal cord, and the neuron, significantly improved from post-module to after …
Using Quicksin Speech Material To Measure Acceptable Noise Level For Adults With Hearing Loss, Lauren E. Bentley, Hua Ou
Using Quicksin Speech Material To Measure Acceptable Noise Level For Adults With Hearing Loss, Lauren E. Bentley, Hua Ou
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
It is clinically useful to predict potential for hearing aid use success prior to the initial fitting of hearing aids. This information may be used to help with additional counseling for speech understanding in noisy listening environments and can also be used to describe the use of communication skills in combination with the dynamic functionality of hearing aids to guide patients that are hearing aid candidates towards success. The Quick Speech-In-Noise (QuickSIN) test and the Acceptable Noise Level (ANL) test have been recognized for their ability to predict hearing aid use success; however, the two measures use different stimuli and …
Listening Induced Changes In Heart Rate Variability For A Speech-In-Noise Task, Hannah Chapin
Listening Induced Changes In Heart Rate Variability For A Speech-In-Noise Task, Hannah Chapin
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
There is recent interest in finding psychophysiological measures that are sensitive to listening effort for the young adult population. Listening effort (LE) is defined as the cognitive resources required to attend to and understand speech (Hicks & Tharpe 2002; McGarrigle, et al. 2014; Gosselin & Gagne 2010). This study attempted to further refine HRV as a measure of listening effort to answer questions regarding HRV sensitivity to signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) for listening tasks, uses of temporal and spectral analyses of HRV and their sensitivity to listening induced stress, the effect of the noise type on HRV across SNRs, and effects …
Listening Effort Outcome Measures In Adult Populations, Melissa Tednes, Scott E. Seeman Phd
Listening Effort Outcome Measures In Adult Populations, Melissa Tednes, Scott E. Seeman Phd
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Listening effort is being considered clinically as an important indicator of patient success with amplification. Listening effort refers to “the mental exertion required to attend to, and understand, an auditory message”. (McGarrigle et al., 2014) Cognitive ability, age, and degree of hearing impairment all must considered when measuring the effort one is exerting on a specific task. Listening effort can be measured using subjective tools, electrophysiologic measures, or with a dual-task paradigm. Subjective tools include self-reports and questionnaires. Electrophysiologic measures can consist of measuring pupil dilation, heart rate variability, and skin conductance. A dual-task paradigm is set-up with two tasks …
Comparison Of Training Models For Hearing Screening Personnel, Ryland Gallagher, Antony Joseph
Comparison Of Training Models For Hearing Screening Personnel, Ryland Gallagher, Antony Joseph
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Early identification of permanent hearing loss begins with the competency of the individuals completing a hearing screening in being able to identify children who are at-risk for hearing loss. The appropriate management of hearing healthcare for children, during the developmental period from birth to school age, requires these individuals to possess knowledge related to screenings, protocols, and follow-up, for children in need of additional diagnostic services. The Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative was formulated by the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) as an extension to newborn hearing screening programs. The program focuses on assisting hearing screeners …

The Impact Of Different Levels Of Instruction On The Outcomes Of Using A Personal Sound Amplifier Product, Shannon Willingham
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Personal sound amplifiers (PSAPs) provide accessible and affordable healthcare to hearing impaired individuals that would otherwise not seek treatment. Like a self-fitting hearing aid, PSAPs do not involve an audiology service. The current pilot study investigated the impact different levels of instruction have on the effectiveness of using a personal sound amplifier product for four participants with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Basic written instruction and premium audiology services were utilized to teach participants how to use the device. Preliminary data suggested that the acquired knowledge, skills, and outcomes of using the PSAPs were similar between two levels of …

Perceived Stress, Self-Compassion, And Emotional Variance In Parents Of Children With Communication Disorders: A Family Approach To Service Delivery In Speech-Language Pathology, Olivia Marie Arnos
Theses and Dissertations
The amount of children born with developmental disorders in the United States is on the rise, increasing from 12.8% in 1998 to 15.04% in 2008 (Huang, Chang, Chi & Lai, 2013). Children with developmental disabilities often have chronic conditions that require additional support across their lifetime, ranging in deficits of attention, physical abilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, learning disabilities, and communication disorders. Research has shown as dependency of a child on caretakers increases, there is an increase in parental stress and a decrease in perceived well-being. Hall and Graff (2011) found parents of children with developmental disorders are less likely …
