Introduction: Adrenal cavernous hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors that pose significant diagnostic challenges. Despite their benign nature, features overlapping with malignancies often complicate management decisions.

Case presentation: A 64-year-old male presented with a 4.4 cm necrotic left adrenal mass discovered incidentally on imaging. His medical history included papillary thyroid carcinoma, with subsequent thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine ablation. Evaluations for hiccups revealed multiple lung nodules, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and anemia. Given the patient’s previous cancer history, elevated aldosterone/renin ratio, and mass size, our multidisciplinary tumor board decided to proceed with a left adrenalectomy. Post-surgical pathology confirmed a diagnosis of adrenal cavernous …

Renal hypoxia has recently been implicated as a key contributor and indicator of various glomerular diseases. As such, monitoring changes in renal oxygenation in these disorders may provide an early diagnostic advantage that could prevent potential adverse outcomes. Blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD MRI) is an emerging noninvasive technique for assessing renal oxygenation in glomerular disease. Although BOLD MRI has produced promising initial results for the use in certain renal pathologies, the use of BOLD imaging in glomerular diseases, including primary and secondary nephrotic and nephritic syndromes, is relatively unexplored. Early BOLD studies on primary nephrotic syndrome, nephrotic …

Assessment Of Altmetrics And Plumx Metrics Scoring As Mechanisms To Evaluate The Top 100 Trending Hidradenitis Suppurativa Articles On Social Media: Cross-Sectional Study, Chapman Wei, Aaron Fong, Theodore Quan, Puneet Gupta, Adam Friedman Jan 2020

Background: Dermatologists are increasingly utilizing social media platforms to disseminate scientific information. New tools, such as altmetrics and PlumX metrics, have been made available to rapidly capture the level of scientific article dissemination across social media platforms. However, no studies have been performed to assess the level of scientific article dissemination across social media regarding hidradenitis suppurativa, a disease that is still currently not well understood.

Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the utility of altmetrics and PlumX metrics by characterizing the top 100 “trending” hidradenitis suppurativa articles in the altmetric database by the altmetric attention score …

Riboswitches are conformationally dynamic RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding specific small molecules. ZTP riboswitches bind the purine-biosynthetic intermediate 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside 5'-monophosphate (ZMP) and its triphosphorylated form (ZTP). Ligand binding to this riboswitch ultimately upregulates genes involved in folate and purine metabolism. Using an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), the room-temperature structure of the Fusobacterium ulcerans ZTP riboswitch bound to ZMP has now been determined at 4.1 Å resolution. This model, which was refined against a data set from ∼750 diffraction images (each from a single crystal), was found to be consistent with that previously obtained from data collected at …

Review Of Risk Assessment Tools To Predict Morbidity And Mortality In Elderly Surgical Patients Brief Title: Review Of Surgical Risk Assessment Tools, Gilgamesh Eamer, Mohamed Al-Amoodi, Jayna Holroyd-Leduc, Darryl Rolfson, Lindsey Warkentin, Rachel Khadaroo Jan 2018

Review Of Risk Assessment Tools To Predict Morbidity And Mortality In Elderly Surgical Patients Brief Title: Review Of Surgical Risk Assessment Tools, Gilgamesh Eamer, Mohamed Al-Amoodi, Jayna Holroyd-Leduc, Darryl Rolfson, Lindsey Warkentin, Rachel Khadaroo

Background

Informed surgical consent requires accurate estimation of risks and benefits. Multiple risk assessment tools are available; however, most are not widely used or are specific to certain interventions. Assessing surgical risk is especially challenging in elderly patients because of their range of comorbidities, level of frailty, or severity of illness and a number of available surgical interventions.

Data sources

We searched MEDLINE from January 2014 to July 2017 for studies that used risk assessment tools in studies on elderly surgical patients. We then sought the original articles describing each assessment tool and subsequent validation studies.

Conclusions

We identified risk …

The Effect Of Health Insurance Coverage And The Doctor-Patient Relationship On Health Care Utilization In High Poverty Neighborhoods, Destini Smith, Alan Akira, Kenneth Hudson, Andrea Hudson, Marcellus Hudson, Marcus Mitchell, Errol Crook Sep 2017

African Americans have higher rates of mortality than whites who are the same age and sex. We hypothesize that in low socioeconomic status neighborhoods, having health insurance coverage and a regular health care provider increases the likelihood of receiving diagnostic tests for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We use data from a random two-stage cluster sample of 230 adults living in high poverty census tracts to examine the effects of insurance coverage and having a regular doctor on the likelihood receiving diagnostic tests for high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and blood pressure. We find that health insurance coverage increases the odds …

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are typically involved in non-equilibrium cellular processes, and specificity can arise from differences in ground state, transition state, or product states of the binding reactions for alternative RNAs. Here, we use high-throughput methods to measure and analyze the RNA association kinetics and equilibrium binding affinity for all possible sequence combinations in the precursor tRNA binding site of C5, the essential protein subunit of Escherichia coli RNase P. The results show that the RNA sequence specificity of C5 arises due to favorable RNA-protein interactions that stabilize the transition state for association and bound enzyme-substrate complex. Specificity is …
