Lack Of Food Access And Food Consumption Patterns Of Late Midlife Women In Southeast Michigan, Sarah S. Bassiouni, Ebony M. White, Carrie Karvonen-Gutierrez, Sioban D. Harlow
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Background: Food access is a key social determinant of health for older adults at high risk of chronic disease and physical disability.
Methods: This cross-sectional analysis examined correlates of food access and the relationship between food access and food consumption characteristics in a sample of 316 late midlife women from Southeast Michigan in 2015-2016.
Results: Lack of food access, defined as access to self-perceived adequate grocery shopping resources in one’s neighborhood, was reported by 20.9% of women. Women who reported lack of food access were less likely to report making meals at home (p=0.02) and had less frequent consumption of …

Abstract:
Introduction
As cancer prevention and treatment advances, cancer survival rates continue to increase. The growing population of cancer survivors have unique needs that must be addressed to improve quality of life throughout the cancer-care continuum.
Methods
Using data compiled from the 2015 Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (MiBRFS), the Cancer Registry, and focus groups, several areas of need amongst cancer survivors were identified.
Results
In focus groups cancer survivors identified the 27 needs that fell into three categories: improving health-related behavior, utilizing health care services, and receiving emotional support. The MiBRFS provided population estimates for 10 of the 27 …

Michigan Journal of Public Health
The vast majority of refugees in Michigan is from Iraq, and yet the health status of this population is not well defined. The purpose of this study was to describe chronic disease prevalence of Iraqi refugees and examine associations between sociodemographic characteristics and chronic disease. This study reviewed medical charts of 613 Iraqi refugees to examine the association between demographic characteristics and chronic conditions. The dependent variables were body mass index, non-fasting blood glucose, and history of hypertension and diabetes. The independent variables were birth place, age, sex, and smoking history. Men were 3.99 times (95% CI=1.88, 8.48) as likely …

Medicaid Home Visitation And Maternal And Infant Care And Health: A Reassessment Of Program Effectiveness, Cristian Meghea, Zhiying You, Jennifer E. Raffo, Lee Anne Roman
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Introduction: The Maternal Infant Health Program, MIHP, is Michigan's largest home visiting program for Medicaid-eligible pregnant women and infants. Prior quasi-experimental propensity score matched MIHP evaluations were limited by the possibility of selection bias due to the limited available baseline characteristics. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of MIHP including previously unobserved baseline characteristics to mitigate the possibility of selection bias.
Methods: We analyzed health care and outcomes of mothers and their infants using linked administrative and screening data. All Medicaid pregnant women with a singleton birth in Michigan between 2009 and 2012 who were prenatally …

Preventive Primary Care Screening Patterns After Provider Ehr Adoption For Michigan Medicaid Adults, William D. Corser 9183470, Zhiying You, John Hazewinkel
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Introduction
It remains largely unknown how use of electronic health records (EHR) impacts ordering of preventive/screening services (PSS). These analyses examined the influence of confirmed Medicaid provider EHR adoption on primary care ordering rates of five major PSS. Sample was comprised of 10,149 continuously enrolled Michigan Medicaid adults linked to 6,587 providers.
Methods
The authors obtained complete office-based billing claims data from the Michigan Medicaid Data Warehouse for adults with 29 or more months of continuous state Medicaid coverage. PSS claims data were linked to patients’ Medicaid-assigned providers who either had, or had not, EHR-attested during the 60-month analytic window. …

Working To Improve Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination Uptake In Michigan, Courtney Cole, Angela Mcfall
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Increased cases of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related cancers and low HPV vaccine uptake are public health concerns that directly affect young adults and adolescents around the country. The HPV vaccine is recommended to prevent HPV associated cancers. Increased awareness and health education interventions are needed to promote the importance of the HPV vaccine and to achieve an HPV vaccine completion rate of 80% as outlined by the Healthy People 2020 goal. The Michigan Cancer Consortium HPV vaccine Priority Workgroup is working to improve vaccine uptake in Michigan through statewide projects that promote health education resources and address barriers associated with …

Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) programs are a collaborative method to address cancer burden. Each CCC program is required to have a cancer plan to guide activities to reduce the cancer burden in their jurisdiction and should reflect the most recent research and evidence-based strategies. In 2015, Michigan set out to revise its CCC plan that met the needs of its coalition while using a participatory process involving its network of approximately 100 stakeholders. A collaborative approach involving multiple workgroups was used to develop the criteria and content for the CCC plan. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) …

Analysis Of Policy Changes Aimed At Breastfeeding Promotion As Part Of The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children (Wic): Making It Work For Michigan, Elizabeth L. Macquillan
Michigan Journal of Public Health
In 2011, changes to the specific type, timing, and amount of food benefits to mothers in the WIC program were rolled out nationwide. These were the first substantive changes since 1980 and were designed to increase breastfeeding initiation rates and extend breastfeeding duration among WIC program participants. Effectiveness of the program changes have been mixed and variable by geographic area of the U.S., however. In Michigan, breastfeeding duration has not increased. This analysis examines the implementation of the national policy change at the state level for Michigan and suggests additions to program to specifically target duration breastfeeding by Michigan mothers.

Physical Activity: Like Mother, Like Daughter?, Suzanne M. Keep
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Physical inactivity is a leading cause of death in the United States (U.S.), and is a public health priority. The majority of individuals do not engage in regular physical activity (PA). Hispanics have the highest inactivity rates (51.3%) in the U.S. (HealthyPeople.gov, 2012). This paper reports a gap in knowledge concerning factors that affect PA. Data was collected in Kent and Ottawa counties in Michigan, with Hispanic mothers (N=79) and their daughters (N=79). This study supports the relationship among societal norms, exercise self-efficacy and activity related affect, on commitment to a plan of PA. Theorized relationships appear to be more …

Restructuring The Michigan Child Care Fund: Reducing Costs And Improving Outcomes, David Wingard, Kieran J. Fogarty, Mary Lagerwey, Joshua Scott
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Michigan’s policy to distribute the Child Care Fund (CCF) to counties at a flat rate of 50% as stated in the Michigan Comprehensive Laws 400.117a provides no structured incentive to the counties to use evidence based practices that are cost-effective for locally based delinquent youth intervention programs. This policy analysis answers the following questions: (1) would retaining delinquent youth in the community produce a cost benefit and/or better outcomes than confinement and (2) is public safety at risk if delinquent youth are retained in the community? Utilizing a policy analysis framework our evidence found that community based services provide better …
