The aim of the study was to increase knowledge of the damaging consequences of obesity and related comorbidities. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions on a global scale and increases the potential health risk of many associated diseases. Faith-Based organizations have been found to be optimal resources for public health education. The shared beliefs and comradery are a source of support and encouragement for those who face many of life’s challenges, as well as life’s joys. For many years public health organizations, such as The World Health Organization (WHO) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have stressed the need for proper hand hygiene. Proper hand hygiene requires a prescribed process to rid the hands of potentially infecting organisms by using soap and water (handwashing) or hand sanitizer (sanitizing). These processes need to be performed at critical times to promote infection prevention. Diabetes is a global epidemic and is a leading cause of disease-related death. In the United States, diabetes is the most common chronic disease affecting 23.6 million Americans or 7.8% of the population (Centers for Disease Control, 2010a). African American women have the highest prevalence of diabetes. Health promotion in the form of diabetes self-management is the key to reducing this urgent disparity. This descriptive study sought to identify barriers to diabetes self-management and identify relationships associated with self-management in this population.
