Paravertebral Blocks In The Adult Thoracic Surgical Patient Enhancing Knowledge For The Anesthesia Provider, Daniel D. Orozco, Ann Miller Dnp, Crna, Aprn

Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects

ABSTRACT

Background: Thoracic Epidural Analgesia (TEA) is currently the gold standard analgesia in adult thoracic surgical patients. TEA has medical complications like sepsis, neurological injury, spinal hematoma, and dural puncture. TEA is also contraindicated for patients with existing neurological or hematological comorbidities including patients under antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy. These factors not only reduce the scope of administering TEA but also increase the risks of hemodynamic instability like hypotension and bradycardia. PVB can decrease medical complications, side effects, and increase patient satisfaction.

Aim: This quality improvement project aims to compare if PVB is more effective than TEA in terms of …

Understanding And Improving Older Male Participation And Older Adult Adherence In Evidence-Based Health Promotion Programs, Chelsie L. Anderson Nov 2018

Understanding And Improving Older Male Participation And Older Adult Adherence In Evidence-Based Health Promotion Programs, Chelsie L. Anderson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aging population and burden of chronic conditions have led researchers and practitioners to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based programs (EBPs) for older adults. The Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative (HARC) was established to make EBPs including Diabetes Self-Management Program, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Matter of Balance, and EnhanceFitness (EF) accessible in south Florida. According to the REAIM model, reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance determine the impact of EBPs. Evaluation of HARC demonstrated widespread adoption of EBPs by community organizations that reached diverse participants and effectiveness among participants attending the recommended number of sessions, but only 19% of EBP participants …

Background

The stomatognathic system and dysfunction in this system may be related to postural control. The proposal of the present study is to assess the effect of mandibular mobilization in individuals with temporomandibular disorder using surface electromyography of the muscles of mastication and stabilometric variables.

Methods/Design

A randomized, controlled, blind, clinical trial will be carried out, with the participants divided into three groups: 1) facial massage therapy (control group), 2) nonspecific mandibular mobilization and 3) specific mandibular mobilization. All groups will be assessed before and after treatment using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, surface electromyography of the masseter …

The Effects Of Therapeutic Ultrasound On Open Wounds, Martha Henao Bloyer Apr 1999

The Effects Of Therapeutic Ultrasound On Open Wounds, Martha Henao Bloyer

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound (US) therapy in the treatment of open wounds as an adjunct to the usual and customary treatment provided by physical therapists. An exhaustive search of all published studies on the effects of therapeutic ultrasound on open wounds was performed. Every article, which met certain criteria, was reviewed in detail. Criteria included the use of human subjects, animal subjects, or human cells in vitro, publication in referred journals indexed by MEDLINE, CINAHL and availability of full text in the English language. Fourteen studies met the …

The Effects Of Massage Therapy On Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness After Unaccustomed Exercise For Healthy, Sedentary Adults, Neal B. Finkelstein Jan 1993

The Effects Of Massage Therapy On Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness After Unaccustomed Exercise For Healthy, Sedentary Adults, Neal B. Finkelstein

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of massage therapy on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) following unaccustomed exercise in healthy, sedentary adults. Fifteen volunteers between the ages of 23 and 63 performed 100 calf raises followed by 15 minutes of rest. After the rest period, one leg was randomly assigned to receive a 5-minute massage while the other leg received a 5-minute placebo ultrasound treatment. A questionnaire was administered to evaluate DOMS at 24, 48, and 72 hour posttreatment intervals when DOMS reportedly is at its peak. A double blind control was employed so that the examiner was unaware as to which …
