These studies include the potential adverse effects in causing ADHD, developmental milestone delays, and low birth weights in children. Of the three studies analyzed, …

The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting On Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Alissa Guinto Jun 2020

The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting On Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Alissa Guinto

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Articles

Diabetes mellitus is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States, comprising about 10% of the population. With intermittent fasting gaining popularity in the media as a method to lose weight and control chronic illness, patients with diabetes would likely turn to any of the fasting methods in order to better manage their disease. However, there is a paucity of information to support whether intermittent fasting is an effective method to control diabetes, in conjunction with lifestyle modifications and anti-diabetic pharmacotherapy. This review sought to identify clinically relevant human studies that provide evidence that intermittent fasting is …

10 Patient-Centered Questions For Clinical Encounters With Transgender Patients, Blossom Kim Jun 2020

10 Patient-Centered Questions For Clinical Encounters With Transgender Patients, Blossom Kim

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Articles

Transgender (TG) individuals face extensive barriers to care that result in detrimental health disparities and increased prevalence of certain medical conditions such as mood disorders, HIV, and substance abuse. Existing research details multiple approaches to aid healthcare providers in reducing these disparities, but they tend to either generalize the transgender community or provide a surplus of information that may potentially overwhelm healthcare providers. This best practices review aims to provide clinicians with an approach that includes 10 patient-centered questions in hopes of improving patient-clinician rapport and addressing the main disparities and health concerns a TG patient may have.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation And Gut Microbiome Effects On Psychiatric Illnesses, Mona Seresht

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Articles

Despite the medical advances that have been made in regards to mental health, psychiatric medications, and alternative therapies, many patients continue to suffer day in and day out, unable to live the type of life they desire. Many times, the medication route includes many episodes of trial and error, side effects, and no significant improvement in actual symptoms. Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld Jan 2020

Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Articles

Food allergies can have a severe and drastic effect on a person’s lifestyle, while prevention of allergic disease can help to ensure others do not have to live with this burden. There are a variety of differing hypotheses that offer explanations for the early development of food allergies, particularly peanut allergies. Two of the foremost hypotheses are the Hygiene Hypothesis and the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis. The Hygiene Hypothesis claims that the diversity of a child’s microbiota creates a beneficial balance of microorganisms which can help prevent the development of allergic disease. Alternatively, the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis states that early environmental exposure to …

Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy: Treating Depression And Anxiety With Mushrooms, Sofia Beck

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Articles

Depression and anxiety are debilitating mental health conditions that affect a large portion of the United States. Current pharmacological treatments for these disorders require daily administration, are associated with a number of side effects, and can be ineffective for some. Emerging evidence in novel treatment options may necessitate a shift toward how we treat these psychiatric disorders.

Studies involving the psychedelic serotonin agonist, psilocybin, are currently experiencing a resurgence as an alternative for patients who are unresponsive to traditional treatments. Clinical trials using psilocybin in combination with psychotherapy have demonstrated sustained reductions in depression and/or anxiety symptoms. When used in …

Objective: The purpose of this systematic review is to determine if there is an increased risk of uterine rupture in patients with twin gestations attempting vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) versus planned repeat cesarean delivery (PRCD).
