Predominantly Methicillin-Susceptible S. Aureus Bacteria Found In Csp Students’ S. Aureus Strains, Roma Ambo

Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters

Positive Staphylococcus aureus strains from CSP students were tested for methicillin resistance (MRSA) using the Kirby-bauer assay. Kirby-bauer assay technique was used to determine the sensitivity of staphylococcus aureus bacteria against oxacillin. MRSA infection is the result of a bacteria that has built resistance against the antibiotics used to treat staph infections. The results of this experiment concludes that majority of the strains tested are methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA).

Some commensal bacterial species have the ability to block the growth of harmful pathogens. The focus of this research was to evaluate different commensal nasal swab isolates’ capability to inhibit the colonization of the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. An Interspecies Inhibition assay was conducted to determine the potential growth inhibition of 16 non-S. aureus strains against four characterized S. aureus isolates. After conducting the research, three commensal nasal isolates (0879, 0880, and 0887) all inhibited the growth of S. aureus strain S0037. Additionally, commensal nasal isolate 0887 did not inhibit the growth of S. aureus strain S0028. These results suggest …

DPT Capstone Posters

Introducation

Pelvic floor musculature is involved in sexual, bowel, and bladder function, organ support, breathing, and load transfer.1 Sixteen percent of males experience pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD).1 Therefore, it is important for physical therapists to adequately screen male patients to identify PFD either for proper treatment or referral to a men’s pelvic health (MPH) provider.

The Academy of Pelvic Health (APH) offers Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curricular guidelines for Women’s Health content, but to date has no published guidelines for MPH.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to gain clinician perspective to assist in the development of DPT …

Optimizing Student Retention From Undergraduate To The Dpt Program Within The Same Institution, Lyndsey Vandenberg Pt, Dpt, Edd, Brittany Boss Spt, Kellen Cameron Spt, Lauren Simonson Spt

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

University stakeholders such as academic advisors, admissions staff and undergraduate (UG) faculty have the ability to influence student retention from undergraduate to graduate school. The previous groups of this multi-year project identified that there were gaps in knowledge and resources available to these stakeholders. Prospective UG students wanted increased opportunities to interact with CSP DPT faculty and students. UG Faculty and staff desired additional information and resources that they could share with prospective students. The needs assessment that was conducted drove the main goals and products that this project implemented.

Objective

The purpose of this project was to improve …

Assessing The General Public’S Awareness Of The Pharmacological Benefits Of Structured, Prescribed Exercise In The Treatment Of Chronic Disease, Kristin Lefebvre Pt, Phd, Ccs, William Floyd Spt, Christine Lager Spt, Zoey Stewart Spt, Mckenzie Tirrell Spt

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

This novel study sought to observe the general public’s beliefs on the comparison between pharmaceuticals and exercise for the management of chronic disease, as is consistent with the ACSM Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative. The EIM initiative seeks to establish physical activity as a standard of care alongside more traditional interventions such as pharmacology. Despite the established benefit of exercise, little is known about the general public's awareness of the pharmacological benefits of structured, prescribed exercise in the treatment of chronic disease.

Objective

Exercise can be an effective intervention for chronic disease and in some cases, as effective as …

Healthcare Workers Are Twice As Likely To Be Colonized With Staphylococcus Aureus That Contains The Seb Gene, Reese Crowell, Taylor Mach, Amanda Brosnahan

Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters

Staphylococcus aureus is a strain of bacteria that is found growing inside
of the nasal cavity. It is a gram positive bacterium that is for the most
part not harmful and can cause slight skin infection. However the reason
that CSP research is doing this study is because there can be severe
cases that cause organ failure or death if untreated. For this reason CSP
has been conducting research on the passage and toxin production of S.
aureus for the past number of years and have collected around 1,700
nasal swabs to test the CSP community for its positivity rate. …
