In this study, the possible protective effect of red radish containing total phenolic content and antioxidant components on histopathological and immuno histochemical active caspase-3, TNF-α and Iba-1, serum ALT activity, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, liver malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels were evaluated in CCl4induced liver injury in Wistar rats. The rats were randomly divided into six groups (n= 12 to each group). The first group was used as a control which was given only intraperitoneal 0.9% NaCl (0.2 mL / kg / bw); while fermented red radish (FRR) at a dose of 250 mg/kg or 500 mg/kg was …

A total of 80 Wistar rats were divided into eight groups of ten rats each: the first group served as the control, group II was given intraperitoneal 0.2 mL/kg CCl4, twice a week for 8 weeks. Groups III-V were treated daily with PSO for 8 weeks (1, 2 and 3 mL/kg respectively). Groups (VI-VIII) were …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Monosodium glutamate(MSG)is commonly used to enhance the tastes food. It is composed of sodium salt and amino acids. Although MSGis considered safe at the consumption level, its adverse effectshave been reported. The objectiveof thisstudyis to evaluate the effects of MSG on the brain, liver, kidney, testes, and ovaries of zebrafish(Danio rerio)which were chronically exposed to MSG from the embryo stage to the adult stage. Additionally, the fertilization rate and hatching rate of zebrafish embryos were also analyzed. Zebrafishwererandomly divided into four groups and treated with MSG at 0, 10, 100 and 1,000 mg/l, respectively for 60days. Before sacrifice for histopathological …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Two captive female Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Thailand were euthanatized after prolonged recumbency, weakness, and unresponsive treatment. Necropsy revealed multinodular masses of 5-10 cm in diameter which were irregular, large, white and firm in consistency scattered throughout the uterine horns and uteri of both the elephants. Histologically, the tumors displayed mildly pleomorphic, spindle-shaped cells arranged in interlacing pattern interpreted as muscle bundles. The bundles of the muscle cells were interspersed by small amounts of collagen fibers and blood vessels. For immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells showed diffuse positivity for vimentin, desmin, and smooth muscle actin. Based on the pathological results, …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A seminal vesicle carcinoma-in-situ was diagnosed as an incidental finding during histopathological evaluation of necropsy tissues in a 9 year old intact male Indian origin Rhesus macaque. The animal had been used in a series of infectious disease studies and in a terminal renal transplantation experiment over the course of its life at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences. Diagnosis was proffered by a board certified (ACVP) veterinary pathologist due to the microscopic appearance of the neoplasm and confirmed using immunohistochemistry. This report represents the first description of a seminal vesicle carcinoma-in-situ in a non-human primate.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

One sick 4-week-old Eclectus (Eclectus roratus) and two carcasses of 3-week-old Macaws (Ara macao) from a bird farm near Bangkok were submitted in July 2009 for investigation. Necropsy revealed multifocal hemorrhages at subcutaneous tissue, heart, liver and bursa of Fabricius. The most prominent findings were hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. Histopathologic examination showed severe splenic necrosis with presence of homogeneous pale basophilic intranuclear inclusion body in splenic periarteriolar sheath cells. The liver showed severe necrosis with occasionally intranuclear inclusion body in sinusoid-lining cells. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were detected in mesangial cells, epithelium of collecting tubules and papillary ducts of kidney and mesenchymal …

Twenty-two sick koi with cumulative mortality showed clinical signs of depression, brachial hemorrhage and necrosis, focal hemorrhage, pale patches and ulcers on the skin. Clinical examination showed the heavy infection by opportunistic organisms such as Dactylogyrus sp., Gyrodactylus sp. and Saprolegnia sp. of the skin, gill and fins. Histopathologically, the gill showed severe acute diffuse necrosis of the branchial epithelial cells and severe diffuse lymphocytic-monocytic interstitial nephritis with necrosis of the tubular epithelial cells were predominantly found in most sick fish. The presence of homogeneous pale basophilic intranuclear viral inclusions was observed. Transmission electron microscopy showed herpesvirus-like particles in the …

The Detection Of Equine Herpesvirus Antigen In An Aborted Foal Using Immunohistochemistry : A Case Report, Nopadon Pirarat, Wijit Kiatipattanasakul, Theerawat Tharasanit, Pattama Ritruechai, Umi Une, Yasuo Nomura

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Formalin fixed tissues from an aborted foal which had been diagnosed as having Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) infection, on histopathological criteria, were examined for EHV antigen using immunohistochemistry. EHV antigen was found in the focal necrotic area of the liver, especially in hepatocytes and Kupffer cells. Intranuclear and intracytoplasmic, immuno-positive labelings were also prominent in bronchiolar epithelial cells. The method allowed the visualization of the antigenic site distribution and their subsequent correlation with histopathological changes.

Histopathological examination revealed that 70% (14/20) had pneumonia, 50% (10/20) had non-suppurative encephalitis, 33% (7/20) had splenic follicular necrosis and 35% (7/ 20) had gastroenteritis. Immunohistochemical detection of CDV antigens in the brain, lungs, and the gastrointestinal mucosa …
